To complain about lidl girl rolling her eyes at me twice

Kimbomc · 05/09/2015 07:05

I usually only pop in for a few things. But did a huge shop because of a voucher.

When it came to paying she mumbled "would you like a free sticky toy" I could hardly hear this, asked her to repeat it politely. Then I said sorry what is that, she rolled her eyes at me, turned around rolled her eyes at a colleague and said "its a toy when you spend over 10". I get she must get that a lot, but if she didn't mumble or they had signs up about this promotion it wouldn't confuse people. I've never heard of it before.

If she can't manage to deal with customer annoyances without eye rolling and huffing then perhaps a customer facing role isn't for her.

Pepperpot99 · 05/09/2015 08:48

I would have sweetly enquired if she had visited an optician recently, on account of her eye rolling problem. Seriously. I would.

Which one did you get op. We have two that glow in the dark. (Misses point of thread)

To complain about lidl girl rolling her eyes at me twice

Don't agree with rationale that's because it's a low paid job, poor behaviour is ok. My uncle's carer is paid less than that an hour, should she be allowed to roll her eyes at his repeated requests for sherbets (childhood memory, he has dementia) and other far more onerous repetition. She doesn't by the way. She treats him with respect.

Maudofallhopefulness · 05/09/2015 09:01

YABU to not know about Stickees Grin. They are the talk of all the kids and have allowed me to take Ds shopping with me without him complaining.

Birdsgottafly · 05/09/2015 09:01

Lidl checkout staff get paid more than Care Assistants, Nursery Staff and the same as those working in Mental Health.

If you get topped up by Tax Credits and/or maintenance, you can have more disposable income than a Teacher/Nurse.

If you don't enjoy your job, you shouldn't inflict your attitude on others.

I never knew until coming in MN that people had such patronising opinions of those that are happy to take "jobs" and such low expectations.

QueenLaBeefah · 05/09/2015 09:03

I know this is off topic but I'm slightly disappointed that Lidl have started to go down the route of crap toy promotions/ spend £40 get £5 off/ points cards etc. the thing I like about shopping in Lidl (apart from the price) was the ease and simplicity of the checkout.

The shop assistant was rude but I would let it slide. She'll stop being rude when customers challenge her there and then.

Oysterbabe · 05/09/2015 09:14

I wouldn't worry about it.
Round here having your purchases thrown at you by an angry Polish girl is all part of the Lidl experience.

FuzzyWizard · 05/09/2015 09:15

If it was my local Lidl yesterday (in far North of London) YABU. I was in there yesterday and TWO people in front of me made a big show of getting the young woman on the till repeat herself because they didn't catch what she said the first time. She clearly wears hearing aids and speaks with a slight deaf accent. She speaks pretty clearly though and I'm sure she was working harder to understand them than they were to understand her. If I was her by the end of the day I'm pretty sure I'd be rolling my eyes at people too.
If you were in a different Lidl and she was just mumbling then YANBU.

InimitableJeeves · 05/09/2015 09:31

Obviously I'm not saying it is a huge thing, but really I'm tempted to give a quick tweet to lidl but the first thing they would do is ask what store and what person.

Well, of course they would. What can they do about the complaint if you won't tell them who was responsible? Do you seriously expect them to send emergency messages out to all their staff throughout the country not to roll their eyes? I suspect there would be so much eye rolling going on that it would make you dizzy.

YeOldeTrout · 05/09/2015 09:37

Way oversensitive OP. Yabu

NoArmaniNoPunani · 05/09/2015 09:39

YABU

LikeIcan · 05/09/2015 09:40

Eye rolling is so rude & not something you'd expect from anyone in customer service. I wouldn't complain though, but I'd have said something to her at the time.
& I'm [shocked] that people think it's ok to be rude if you're on the minimum wage. What if you're on less than that? Is it ok to throw your shopping on the floor?

Macadaamia · 05/09/2015 09:45

I work In Retail. It is a tedious job but I once was a bit snappy with a customer and he very nicely challenged me over it. That stuck with me and made me think! A lot more than if he'd complained to a manager.

CainInThePunting · 05/09/2015 09:56

Maybe she was rolling her eyes because it's such a lame promotion, not because of you.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 05/09/2015 09:57

I don't think YABU. Eye rolling is really rude. I wouldn't complain about it this time; if she does it again, I would.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 05/09/2015 09:59

That's a point Cain. Although maybe you had to be there to see where the eye roll was directed Grin

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 05/09/2015 10:00

Actually, I wouldn't say its about being on MW. I've worked a variety of jobs, including some under the legal wage, and it's far more about the conditions you work in. Long shifts in supermarkets drive you to the bloody limit in patience, whatever the wage. It may have been the customer before you, or a silly mistake that they had a 10 min bollocking over, or the stress of reaching stupid targets. No, she shouldn't have eye-rolled, but it's so difficult to be 'on' all the time in customer service. They're just human. No way in hell I'd let the manager know, or report it, but then again (unless being somehow abused by said cashier), I don't get offended by small facial expressions by strangers.

AbbeyBartlet · 05/09/2015 10:04

Amazed at the attitude that it's okay to be rude if you aren't paid that highly!

I would have said something at the time, probably would have asked to see the manager and complained. I have done this in supermarkets before. And if she gets in trouble, hen she shouldn't have been so bloody rude to a customer.

greenribbon · 05/09/2015 10:06

I'd say Lidl and Aldi are both average pay, it's just that it seems a good wage because the national minimum wage is usually the norm. I've heard they're both bad companies to work for and staff moral is low. I think the way these companies treat their staff will often be reflected on the shop floor.....hence the rudeness of this check out girl. It's no excuse for rudeness but I think Lidl and Aldi should stop treating their staff like shit so appallingly.

imwithspud · 05/09/2015 10:08

I don't think I'd complain, I'd probably think she was a bit rude and I'd do my best to avoid using her checkout in future.

I used to work in retail and once had someone complain to a manager over a light hearted comment I made which the customer took badly. I got a talking to for it, to be honest though I didn't really learn anything as a result. Except that some people have a chip on their shoulder It would have been much more valuable to me for the customer to say they didn't appreciate the comment, then I could have apologised and explained that I didn't intend to cause any offence.

It's not about thinking people in low wage jobs are entitled to be rude with no consequences, its just that in the grand scheme of things I don't think it's a huge deal and I'd feel really spiteful to complain over something so small when that person could have just been having an off day, like most of us do occasionally - we're human after all. If I were to do anything I would have just said something to her at the time. Sometimes people need a quick word there and then to realize that their conduct isn't acceptable, rather than a smack on the wrists from management at the end of their shift.

AbbeyBartlet · 05/09/2015 10:08

And as for her working long hours, I used to work two jobs which meant that on a Friday I would work one 9-5 and the other 6-4 - had I have been rude to a customer then nobody would have excused that because of the hours I was working.

elQuintoConyo · 05/09/2015 10:10

I regularly eyeroll on MN - should I be tweeted about? Fired?

QueenLaBeefah · 05/09/2015 10:11

When I was in retail I was never rude to customers (extremely tempting). Very often used to go into the stock room and let out the odd exploitive though.

QueenLaBeefah · 05/09/2015 10:12

Expletive even.
