Fat women in bikinis?

HookedOnHooking · 24/08/2015 08:00

I have 25 hours to decide on what beach/pool clothes to get!!!!! And doing my usual 2 yearly pre-holiday panic about being fat.

However. This year I am slightly less fat and contemplaring a bikini rather than my usual black one-piece. But I am still fairly fat. Particularly when sitting (less so when standing and lying flat).

It's all well saying 'wear what you like' or 'wear what you are comfortable in' but because I am fat I look fucking awful in anything less than jeans and a jumper.

So. Over to the hive-mind. What should I do?

Black one piece

Or

Bikini (with very high waist pants)

I'd rather be pale than get skin cancer, ta very much blue.

brittanyfairies · 24/08/2015 14:23

I've just returned from seven weeks in Turkey, there were all shapes and sizes in bikinis and nobody batted an eyelid. The only time larger ladies caught my eye were when they were covering themselves up in a one piece swimming costume.

Go for a bikini, take pride in your weight loss and enjoy your holiday.

blueshoes · 24/08/2015 14:29

I am pale too and hate suntanning. Does not mean I find paleness attractive.

Hoppinggreen · 24/08/2015 14:29

I'm fat and I wear a bikini on holiday, im not pale though so it's probably ok!!!
Wear whatever you feel comfortable in - you will only attract attention if you are tugging at whatever you are wearing and are permanently wrapped in a towel.

Gabilan · 24/08/2015 14:42

"The one thing I would say though is, if you are fair-skinned, get a spray tan."

I'm a redhead. I have beautiful, flawless, white skin. I'm not spraying it teak or risking skin cancer for anybody, I'm staying pale. I like the way I look.

If you don't like this, meh, that's your problem. Seems odd that people can celebrate all shapes and sizes, but get sniffy about skin colour.

PurpleDaisies · 24/08/2015 14:44

Why would it not be ok to wear a bikini if you are pale? Confused

You don't think paleness is attractive blue. I don't care.

I don't understand how on these threads posters of all shapes and sizes are encouraged to wear a bikini but as soon as you mention you are pale it automatically means you are unattractive. I don't see how that works.

Hoppinggreen · 24/08/2015 14:48

I'm taking the mick out of people who seem to think that you need to be brown to wear a bikini purple
Should have done a rolling eyes emoticon but I'm inept

PurpleDaisies · 24/08/2015 14:48

Cross posted with you gabalian. I also have very fair skin which I am totally happy with. Why other people feel the need to tell me I should change it to fit their definition of attractive I don't know. The last one was an older lady who looked like a leather handbag from what was obviously years of sun worshipping. I was not rude in my reply but I very much felt like it.

PurpleDaisies · 24/08/2015 14:49

Apologies hopping I misread your tone.Smile

Gabilan · 24/08/2015 14:53

Yes, agree with you Purple. Tackling prejudice seems to be like playing whack-a-mole. You just about get people to accept that having a "bikini body" means putting your body in a bikini when they say "yeah, but not if you're like, pale, that's just yuck".

Oh for the time 200 years ago when having a tan was a sign of being a peasant who worked in the fields all day Wink

RonaldMcDonald · 24/08/2015 15:01

Fat seems so much more acceptable than pale somehow

June2009 · 24/08/2015 15:07

I bought high waisted swimming shorts from superdry and matching bikini top. Im also self conscious as i look ok standing up but have skin rolls when sitting (fat and loose skin after weight loss). Loads of various sizespeople wear bikinis on the beach seriously, youonly live once.

If old fat guys can get away woth baring saggy hairy tummies whenever tey like then I think you should fight your corner for gender equality :D

Gabilan · 24/08/2015 15:11

"Fat seems so much more acceptable than pale somehow"

It just shows that what we find acceptable has more to do with cultural preferences than health. Tans are a sign of damaged skin. Yes, you need a certain amount of sun exposure to avoid rickets but on the whole a tan isn't a sign of good health. Whereas being obese* brings with it a whole host of health problems.

  • I mean BMI of 30+. BMI of 25-30 isn't actually that unhealthy necessarily, allowing for BMI being a blunt tool that works well on a population level and less well on an individual level.
TheBobbinIsWound · 24/08/2015 15:16

WEAR THE DAMN BIKINI!! Grin
I recently got a few from bravissimo (my G's need acres of material!)

Outlet centres have some too. And ASOS

vegplotter · 24/08/2015 15:22

You know what? I'm in the Med at the moment and there are women of all ages, shapes, and sizes all looking relaxed, happy, and stylish in all manner of swimwear. From full on string bikinis to swimsuits with skirts. Nobody cares, if you are comfortable wear what ever you want!

woodhill · 24/08/2015 15:30

I'm pale too, did get a slight tan in Florida. I just start to go slightly darker then It was time to go home

Reubs15 · 24/08/2015 15:41

Get something pretty! I opt for tankinis personaly. Usually with wire in as I'm big boobed! Nobody's going to care, people walk around topless on holiday....usually old women!

HookedOnHooking · 24/08/2015 15:49

I have a bikini!

In fact I have 2!!!!!!!!

One is big high pants. The other has a foldy up type of pant. Both underwired bra shape tops.

Now bring on the gin and sunshine!!!!

Congratulations!

Though given how long MN was down for, I expect half the thread have been off buying bikinis.

MrsTrentReznor · 25/08/2015 13:50

Hooray!! You will look and feel fabulous!!

middlethird · 25/08/2015 13:53

tankini all the way!

SirChenjin · 25/08/2015 13:56

I'm a size 12 with a wobbly stomach, saggy arse and cellulite. Absolutely no way I would expose the rest of the beach to that - it ain't pretty. Control swimsuits all the way here - and as for the 'no-one's looking' - oh yes they bloody well are Grin

Hackersschmakers · 25/08/2015 13:59

I have jsut got back from France nad realised once again that pretty much all the europeans wear bikinis. or just bikini bottoms. They are definitley not all thin but they all looked pretty good, they seem to have more confidence and better posture or something.

Enjoy your bikinis:)
