Fat women in bikinis?

HookedOnHooking · 24/08/2015 08:00

I have 25 hours to decide on what beach/pool clothes to get!!!!! And doing my usual 2 yearly pre-holiday panic about being fat.

However. This year I am slightly less fat and contemplaring a bikini rather than my usual black one-piece. But I am still fairly fat. Particularly when sitting (less so when standing and lying flat).

It's all well saying 'wear what you like' or 'wear what you are comfortable in' but because I am fat I look fucking awful in anything less than jeans and a jumper.

So. Over to the hive-mind. What should I do?

Black one piece

Or

Bikini (with very high waist pants)

Thank you. You have given me the prod to go and try on.

Where are you going? I prefer a one piece for haring after the small people, but I stood out like a sore thumb in Portugal and Spain. It is bikini all the way there. Body shape irrelevant. Smile

I'm a 16 (was a 22-24 last year) and have bought two bikinis this year. They were both high waisted with under wired halter neck tops. I bought one from matalan at the beginning of summer and one from store 21 in the sale a couple of weeks ago.

I was paranoid about wearing one at first but no one batted an eyelid and this was on a British beach. Life is too short to worry about what strangers may or may not think about your body.

MaidOfStars · 24/08/2015 11:10

I couldn't give a fuck what other people are wearing at the pool or beach, unless it's a particularly noteworthy like a plug-in bikini

bikeandrun · 24/08/2015 11:24

I wear a one piece if I want to swim and a bikini for lounging about( one piece feels hot and clammy) Never found a bikini that's comfortable for serious swimming. How others perceive how I look( I am very flat chested) is not an issue

Oldraver · 24/08/2015 11:34

The problem with a lot of larger swimsuits is they go down the tummy control and padded boobs thing. I hate the stuffiness...its already sweaty fabric but double layed and I dont need padding in the boobs anyway and are way too hot if you have good weather

Louise43210 · 24/08/2015 11:42

Just been to France. Everyone wore bikinis regardless of size. I took a variety of swimwear according to my mood. Lots of swimwear in Sports Direct if you're stuck. Xx

BackInTheRealWorld · 24/08/2015 11:47

I'm fat. I love swimming. I hide in ugly costumes. I see other fat women in bikinis and I wish I could be like them. They wear their bikinis in public and no one cares, no one dies, no one drowns in horror. It's just another person at the beach and that's that. I wish I could let go. I'm ruining it for myself.

PurpleDaisies · 24/08/2015 11:48

Just wear what you like. I wouldn't necessarily be tied to high waisted bottoms (I thought I would love them but they looked dreadful on me and can make you look bigger depending on where you carry your weight). The key thing is finding a supportive bikini top.

Happy shopping!

And on tankinis, by the time they've rode up, they generally end up just covering the lower rib cage. Which for lots of women choosing them for flattery has the opposite effect, cos they're covering what is usually a slimmer part and breaking up the torso thus making it look shorter and therefore wider. Not saying they aren't more flattering on some shapes, or in some styles, or even that everyone wearing them is even doing so for flattery, just that they don't always work like that.

Lurkedforever1 · 24/08/2015 11:59

back do it. Self esteem and confidence will suit you more than a costume you feel you need to hide in.

Desertedislander · 24/08/2015 12:06

Check out ForLuna (www.forluna.co.uk)

They have an amazing sale on and I promise you won't regret it. Their swimwear is such good quality and really flattering

happymummyone · 24/08/2015 12:13

For me, I haven't worn a bikini since I had my DD, I just feel more comfortable in a sucky-in black one piece. I just feel less exposed! If you can sit, swim and stand around happily in a bikini I would go for it because it isn't about anyone else, it's about how you feel!

Stillwishihadabs · 24/08/2015 12:23

I wear a bikini (halter neck and "full" brief style) and pull on a rash vest if I want to swim.

Oldraver · 24/08/2015 12:34

OP....You have just made me buy this Grin

Its a bargain in blue

Hairballs · 24/08/2015 12:48

I went to the beach on Saturday. There was a young lady who was undeniably overweight wearing a bikini. She had great curves and carried herself very well; she looked fabulous.

If you want to wear a bikini, go for it. Fuck what others think of you.

TyrannosaurusBex · 24/08/2015 13:49

I live in a beach holiday destination and can honestly say that nobody cares who wears what on the beach. If I see a very, very overweight woman striding around the beach in a bikini I think 'good for her' because she's happy and cool, otherwise I never notice. It's the sweaty woman tugging self-consciously at her tight, wired, padded, double-layered Lycra one-piece that I notice, simply because she looks so hot and uncomfortable.

PrimalLass · 24/08/2015 13:54

Go for it. Almost everyone looks better in a bikini than a swimsuit - that was my conclusion after taking my own mental survey on holiday Grin

woodhill · 24/08/2015 13:56

I wore a bikini in USA but with high waist. I've got a flabby tummy and am in late 40s. was self conscious but only had 1 tankini top. wear beach dresses or kaftan over it.

FrenchJunebug · 24/08/2015 13:57

you should go to a beach in France: women of all shape and sizes in bikinis. It's all about confidence.

blueshoes · 24/08/2015 13:57

I disagree that almost everyone looks better in a bikini than a swimsuit. Pale jiggly flesh is not attractive and there is a lot of that around.

PurpleDaisies · 24/08/2015 14:07

What is it with the pale bashing? I've noticed it a few times on the thread. It is ok to be confident whatever size you are but not whatever colour you are?

Rant over. Normal service may resume.

Floisme · 24/08/2015 14:15

Yes indeed, Purple. I prefer a one piece. I'm also permanently pale and don't use spray tan so nerr to you all. It would be nice if we could encourage women who want to wear bikinis to do so without decrying other peoples' choices.

blueshoes · 24/08/2015 14:15

It is not 'bashing' to call something unattractive. Both size and colour matter to me.

notquitehuman · 24/08/2015 14:16

I squeezed my flabby white frame into a bikini this year. Since the retro styles are in I went for a nice ASOS Curve one, and it was actually way more flattering than a frumpy swimsuit. I'm sure some people stared and thought of me as a fatty, but I was having too much fun splashing around!
