Fat women in bikinis?

HookedOnHooking · 24/08/2015 08:00

I have 25 hours to decide on what beach/pool clothes to get!!!!! And doing my usual 2 yearly pre-holiday panic about being fat.

However. This year I am slightly less fat and contemplaring a bikini rather than my usual black one-piece. But I am still fairly fat. Particularly when sitting (less so when standing and lying flat).

It's all well saying 'wear what you like' or 'wear what you are comfortable in' but because I am fat I look fucking awful in anything less than jeans and a jumper.

So. Over to the hive-mind. What should I do?

Black one piece

Or

Bikini (with very high waist pants)

Fwiw I liked (not the right word) that you said fat its not shameful or insensitive imo.

ThatIsNachoCheese · 24/08/2015 08:27

Just back from 2 weeks in the sun. Am a size 18/20 and wore a bikini the entire time.
Nobody gave a toss what I was wearing, but the ones in swimsuits stuck out as they were so few and far between.
Also, it was frigging boiling and I may well have died if I'd had to wear a swimming costume!
Be comfortable op, there is nothing for us to be ashamed of, we are just human.

nilbyname · 24/08/2015 08:27

Bikini, nobody wears a one price on the continent! You'll look like a total Brit abroad which should be avoided at all costs. Grin

ThatIsNachoCheese · 24/08/2015 08:28

Oh and pour moi have lovely bikinis :-)

ThatIsNachoCheese · 24/08/2015 08:30

Ha! And what Nilby said...

Ememem84 · 24/08/2015 08:31

If you want to wear one do it!! Look for one of the cute 59's style super high waisted bottoms and super cute halter crop top types. I'm desperate for one of these again. Had one a couple of years ago and lost it in hotel. It was unbelievably amazing. And looked great on any size (I'm a 10 now but was a 14 with gigantic boobs then...). Made me feel great without feeling naked (like teeny bikinis do....)

HookedOnHooking · 24/08/2015 08:32

Right.
Tomorrow I can go and try on. I don't think there's much point in ordering as it's so hard to work out sizes and shapes.

Could you wear a tankini?
That way you can pull it down when sitting and when you are lying down you can tuck it up a bit.
A good site is swimwear365 (part of Bonprix) they have a whole tab section for tankini's.
They have loads if you have the time to order on line.

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 24/08/2015 08:36

I actually don't think high-waist bikini bottoms are particularly flattering, they accentuate a large middle. OK a tiny string bikini isn't the answer but well fitting normal bikini bottoms look better, just make sure it's the right size so not too tight but also no baggy pants.

Ally1234 · 24/08/2015 08:41

Buy and take both. As once your on holiday you will be more relaxed and prob opt for the bikini. However you might be nervous at first so best to take the swimsuit as well. Kinda like a security blanket really. But if you are spending all day on beach or in pool you will prob opt for the bikini more. If for no other reason then it is so much easier when needing the toilet haha! X

Isthereeverarightime1 · 24/08/2015 08:45

i have the same problem, so far I have tried swimsuits a play suit and tankini, tankini just rides up on top so sent back, the play suit is good but need a bigger size lol it has tummy control so good for me following c section and weight gain! I wish I was brave enough to wear a bikini but I'm too self conscious and want to hide as much as possible. You can buy bikini bottoms with a skirt they are nice and help you feel a little less exposed if you worry about your legs/bum. I would say go for it if u feel confident, definitely the bikini alternatively just go with what ever you feel comfortable in!

HookedOnHooking · 24/08/2015 08:45

The tum is the problem. 18 year old stretchmarks and fat. Not pretty and really does need covering up. From waist up it's not so bad.

Fattie that wears a bikini here!
I find with a bikini, I can get a good supporting bikini top that accentuates my boobs and makes me look less like a sausage.
I feel flat chested, frumpy and shy in a one piece swimsuit.
I got lots of mix and match bits online. Might have been on very, but the tops are in good, big bra sizes and the bottoms were available in all sorts of shapes. I went for shorts, but always end up rolling them down. I should have gone for bikini briefs I think. Smile

nottheOP · 24/08/2015 08:48

Do it. On the beach you'll see mostly non perfect bodies - I felt more body confident after our last holiday

trollkonor · 24/08/2015 08:49

If you do want to wear a one piece it is also fine to wear one on the continent. Not everyone wears a bikini over here, a mix of nationalities do, along with beach cover ups. You won't get stared at or talked about ?if you do decide to go down that route.

maybebabybee · 24/08/2015 08:50

Don't get high waisted if you're overweight, I understand the temptation (believe me!) but they actually make you look bigger.

BrendaandEddie · 24/08/2015 08:51

Shit just wear it. No one cares when you're there.

Call yourself fat and use the slightly annoying term hive mind.

BrendaandEddie · 24/08/2015 08:52

After all a one piece doesn't make you lose weight.

MamaLazarou · 24/08/2015 08:53

IMO, high-waisted bikini bottoms are far more frumpy than a one-piece (and you won't get a brown tum). How about those fold-down bikini bottoms so you can pull them up when you're walking around and fold them down when you're swimming/sunbathing.

With respect, no-one will give a shit what you look like in your bikini except for you.

BoodlesMcToodles · 24/08/2015 08:55

I live in a beach resort and am size 20. I wear a bikini even though I am usually going to see people I know. It's my beach too so I'll wear what I like. There are 359 other directions people can look in if they don't like it. I mostly get positive comments apart from teenage boys who I just assume are less comfortable around a larger figure. I usually give it a little jiggle if I hear them being rude. And I'm not a confident person per se, I just believe in my right to wear what I choose.
Enjoy your hols, whatever you decide to do.

Homemadeapplepie · 24/08/2015 08:57

I'm on holiday right now, I have only brought swimming costumes-I'm not fat but have horrendous stretch marks that I don't like to expose. The vast majority of women here (all ages and sizes) are in bikinis of all different designs (mostly quite skimpy though) nobody looks nobody cares. I bought 3 new swimsuits last week in the sale, there were certainly plenty around, or you could wait until you reach your holiday destination as I find they sell fabulous bikinis abroad. The one thing I would say though is, if you are fair-skinned, get a spray tan.

DatsunCogs · 24/08/2015 08:58

I've just come back from Bulgaria where women of every size wore bikinis, it was great! No one cared and everyone looked comfortable, just how holidays should be Smile Asos have loads of high waisted bikini pants, they also do tops for bigger busts if you need. Go for it, I say!

Binkybix · 24/08/2015 09:03

If you do go for a swimsuit, don't assume it needs to just be black. My friend got a black one with white spots, built in boob support when we went on holiday and it looked great.

BrendaandEddie · 24/08/2015 09:13

So agree. Wear a colour that suits you. Black bikinis can look very ageing

RonaldMcDonald · 24/08/2015 09:15

Always always a bikini
A size 30 woman looks miles better in a bikini than a swimsuit
