Fat women in bikinis?

HookedOnHooking · 24/08/2015 08:00

I have 25 hours to decide on what beach/pool clothes to get!!!!! And doing my usual 2 yearly pre-holiday panic about being fat.

However. This year I am slightly less fat and contemplaring a bikini rather than my usual black one-piece. But I am still fairly fat. Particularly when sitting (less so when standing and lying flat).

It's all well saying 'wear what you like' or 'wear what you are comfortable in' but because I am fat I look fucking awful in anything less than jeans and a jumper.

So. Over to the hive-mind. What should I do?

Black one piece

Or

Bikini (with very high waist pants)

Yeah get a colour/design you are on holiday

RonaldMcDonald · 24/08/2015 09:20

Tankinis are a pita no matter what your size ime they are the worst of both worlds always pulling them down and hoiking them up
Cut away costumes may end with you looking like a split sausage
Full costumes make a spectacle...you are hot and look like a seal

BIKINI ( btw IMO big knickered and shorts make everyone's arse look bigger )

grapejuicerocks · 24/08/2015 09:21

You need to try on. They vary hugely on how flattering they are.

Couldn't a compromise be a one piece in a different colour to boring black?

unlucky83 · 24/08/2015 09:25

I went on abroad at the beginning of July (Scottish summer hols) - lots of 'different' nationalities - Russia, Eastern European, Spanish, German another saying most people wore bikinis -without embarrassment, without a tan. People who must have been size 20+ (I'm 16-18).
I had one pieces as did my DDs and we were definitely the odd ones out...I would take a bikini next time ...exempt maybe not - my stomach hasn't see the sun for 40 years - it would go into shock Grin.

(I should also say I am very fair skinned - so if it is hot (and it was) I need to keep covered, keep in the shade AND use factor 50 - even being careful my shoulders did get a bit red and sore... (In fact I routinely keep my shoulders/back covered since I burned them really badly when I was 11 - worried about the long term damage)
DP was killing himself laughing at me, saying I stuck out like a sore thumb walking around in my big shirt, sarong and sunhat...and it was true I would have fitted in better in a skimpy bikini with my white belly flopping around....
(I had the last laugh though - he's Arabic & says he has natural protection (his dad comes from the Sahara Hmm) - he doesn't need to keep covered/use suncream...except obviously he does as he got really burned on the first day - again - even 8yo DD2 can remember he did exactly the same thing a couple of years in a heatwave in the UK ...just not quite so sore...maybe he learned this time...)

Wear what you like. Confidence looks better than support panels imho.
If you're actually bothered by stretch marks or think you might feel self conscious at first, get one of those thin voile type cover up things- the ones that look like tiny skimpy dresses/jackets, you can still see your shape and bikini under them but scars and dodgy tan lines aren't as noticeable. Although no reason to be ashamed of stretch marks either.

dementedpixie · 24/08/2015 09:29

I am a 20 on the bottom and 36GG and wore bikinis on holiday. I got separates from simply be and Amazon. Panache and curvy Kate bikinis were flattering and pretty. I didn't wear huge bikini bottoms - think it was a panache classic pant that I got

Naicecuppatea · 24/08/2015 09:29

I think a well fitting bikini will look loads better than a suit. Do it, you'll look great!

Dowser · 24/08/2015 09:32

Bhs still have some skirtinis ( bottoms with skirt and bikini top). They sell them separately. So far I've managed to get a matching black with red roses, a purple stripey skirtini with plain purple top and a cerise stripey skirtini with a white top I'm in the process of remaking to make it fit better.

They also have matching shorts if you don't want the skirt. Rtheyve also introduced some full price black stripey ones that for some reason aren't in the sale yet but I think they soon will be.

Itscurtainsforyou · 24/08/2015 09:33

Elomi swimwear has a few loose fitting tankini tops that you don't have to worry about riding up.
I have an elomi bikini (bra size top, big pants) and tankini top to go over the top. I don't like wearing a regular bikini but am happy to wear this.

TriJo · 24/08/2015 09:37

High waisted bottoms and a well fitting bra-sized top will look good and be comfortable. Go for it :)

SuperFlyHigh · 24/08/2015 09:37

take both and wear whichever is comfortable.

use fake tan at start if you're uncomfy re white skin...

what's even better are cover-ups for if you feel bare/exposed etc:-

Crosbybeach · 24/08/2015 09:40

Bikini!

But never a tankini - you just get a roll of fat popping out then. Loads of people will be wearing all sorts - get a really nice hold up bra type one to make the most of your assets!

DinosaursRoar · 24/08/2015 09:41

oh, cover the tummy with spray tan if you're worried about stretch marks, then strut like you own the beach.

Make sure the bikini top is a bra style with decent support, don't go for high waisted pants, they'll make you look bigger than you are.

Get a kaftan/cover up for when you're walking around the pool side if you are worried. But really, you won't be the only one who isn't a size 6.

Octopus37 · 24/08/2015 09:42

I'm another one who says go for a bikini, I have just got back from Spain and the women who wore one pieces were few and far between. Most women wore bikinis regardless of size, some were skinny, some were obese, most were somewhere in the middle. I found this liberating and didn't feel self concious

DragonWithAGirlTattoo · 24/08/2015 09:48

wear what you feel comfortable in

i wear a 1-piece (am around a smallish 16 - nearer 14 than 18 & early 40s)

BringMeTea · 24/08/2015 09:49

Bikini! All the way.
Agree with others who have said avoid high waisted if not slim in the midzone. In fact the most flattering bottoms are the ones with side ties as they kinda balance one out i find. And yes, supportive top so tend to avoid those that tie around your neck.

Bit of self tanning of the midriff before you go and bob's your uncle. Enjoy!

microferret · 24/08/2015 09:49

I'd go for a one-piece, but there's no need to go for a black one. Maybe go for a shapewear one with a nice retro halterneck and polka dots, they always look marvellous on fuller figures.

BocaDeTrucha · 24/08/2015 09:55

O Love in Spain and the only swimsuits you see here are on tourists, usually British. No one here gives a rats arse about looking fat in a bikini and is very refreshing. The key is in a good fit - not too tight bottom and a good, underwired top part. But a nice sarong to go with it and then just go have fun!!!

wannabestressfree · 24/08/2015 09:59

I wear a tankini and am overweight AND wear a colostomy bag. I am not being uncomfortable when away, hot and sweaty etc. I love it :)

Branleuse · 24/08/2015 10:00

when i was on holiday in may, i took a one piece and a fatkini (high waist)

I think i was one of the only ones so covered up. Ive bought a normal bikini now, and rock it

Birdsgottafly · 24/08/2015 10:41

I used to wear Bikinis, I was happy with my weight, a size 12.

I then became obese and wouldn't go on holiday. I've lost five stone, I've got one more to go and I've opted for well fitting tankinis, for an upcoming holiday.

My DDs (and their friends) 17-30, size 8-12, look fabulous in their one piece swimsuits, with tassels, cut outs and beads etc.

They encourage their larger friends to go for well fitting Bikinis or Tankinis, with colourful cover ups/kaftans.

I think they key is the colour, I love vibrancy and how well something fits.

Pedi, prepared skin, fake tan, finish it off.

I'm annoyed with myself that I wasted four years, not going anywhere and fully enjoying myself, because of my weight.

People who are just out to enjoy themselves, join in and get along with others, look good.

koalabearsears · 24/08/2015 10:45

If I'd lost 3 stone I would be wearing a bikini, no matter what size I was! Go for it Smile

TinyMonkey · 24/08/2015 10:47

I'm a fat woman and I always wear a bikini on holiday, one pieces are for swimming lengths in my local pool.

Try figleaves.

TheDowagerCuntess · 24/08/2015 10:52

I don't care what anyone else wears, but for me, it's one-piece all the way.

I'm 5"10' and a size 10 but I have a crepey tummy, and would prefer not to show it. I'm definitely not a hiding-in-the-shadows scuttler, though - I just feel far more confident in a one-piece.

For me, it's a no-brainer, but if you are going to go down the bikini route, then at least ensure it's an intervention-sized bra, so that you get a more defined waist.

DurhamDurham · 24/08/2015 10:53

I think that one piece swimsuits are very unflattering, most women look much better IMO in a bikini.

Most women also have wobbly bits too so I would go for it and have a fab time.
