to think there's nothing wrong with hoops on buttered toast for lunch?

It's not great, wholesome nutritious food is it. But it's nice, and comforting, and the weather's shit outside and they like it! And it's hardly a bucket of KFC.

Well, DH disagrees, and has just had a huff at me on the phone because I'm 'feeding the children crap all the time' Hmm

He's been on a health kick for the past month - homemade raw muesli for breakfast, the works. This has prompted a few discussions about the family's eating habits as a whole recently and he feels we could all do better. I agreed, and we've been reigning in the sugar, adding more veg etc.

But apparently these devil-hoops and the shepherd's pie I made for dinner last night are just a couple of examples of how I'm not really listening to his concerns. I don't really understand how a plate of homemade shepherd's pie and a pile of fresh veg doesn't constitute as at the very least wholesome food, but maybe I'm dead wrong.

So AIBU in thinking a can of spaghetti hoops on some buttered toast is the food of Gods?, along with a varied and healthy diet (aside from the plainly unhealthy shepherd's pie Confused), is perfectly fine, and that he needs to unbunch his Y-fronts?

Your husband needs to realise that while he can punish his own gut in any way he sees fit, sometimes a small person just really fancies a carb overload.

Your shepherd's pie sounded fine.

I'd be telling him to cook his own crap and leave you all to enjoy normal food.

AmyLouKin · 12/08/2015 15:06

Ah, apologies, I see someone mentioned quorn mince and sweet potato mash! If you eat meat, why bother. I'd say normal shepherds pie and plenty of veg is pretty balanced meal!

limitedperiodonly · 12/08/2015 15:06

He's not reading those 'men's health' magazines that are full of pseudo science bull is he?

You're married to one of those too iklboo? Wink

I went along with it for a short while and then knocked it on the head too.

OP, I'd serve up spaghetti hoops on toast every now and then if that's what they wanted. I do beans on toast more often but that's because I prefer them. Wouldn't do salad. Grated cheese, yes, but not salad.

Shepherd's pie is fine. Mine has the Delia Smith tip of sauteed leeks and cheese on top. Leeks are very good for you.

DH has annoying ideas about fat and salt but his weakness and strength is his mashed potato. He makes it with loads of creme fraiche and sometimes flavours it with horseradish or mustard.

CrystalMcPistol · 12/08/2015 15:06

'What's with all the quorn haters?'

Shit explosions mainly.

gamerchick · 12/08/2015 15:09

My youngest lives spaghetti or hoops on toast and as its one of the few foods he will eat himself it's definitely a ring piece moment to the food snobs Grin

Nice of your bloke to prepare all meals from now on isn't it OP? But I really would like to do as been suggested and get alpha spaghetti and spell fuck off in white buttered toast for his tea Grin

Sometimesjustonesecond · 12/08/2015 15:11

Nothing worse than a health food nut. They're worse than ex smokers for getting on people's tits.

Hoops on toast occasionally will not kill your kids. I'd be telling my husband to take over all the shopping and cooking if he wasn't happy with how I did it!

TendonQueen · 12/08/2015 15:13

There are kids in this country who just get a packet of crisps chucked in their direction, if that, for lunch. Tell him to get a grip. Or the suggestion about spelling out a message with alphabetti spaghetti Smile

HemanOrSheRa · 12/08/2015 15:17

Well, DH disagrees, and has just had a huff at me on the phone because I'm 'feeding the children crap all the time'

Bloody cheek! And over the phone too! I'd be interested to know whether he is brave or foolish enough to say this to your face Grin

limitedperiodonly · 12/08/2015 15:18

I'd get so sick of teachers asking how children how they could make food 'healthier'.

I realise it was probably part of some arse-aching directive and not their fault but it used to drive me potty.

The answer to everything was: 'your mum could make that healthier by putting some sweetcorn in it.'

No. I like sweetcorn in its place, but its place is not in my ragu sauce.

mikado1 · 12/08/2015 15:31

I can be precious about my ds' meals but it would not go down well if I said this to my dh-and I wouldn't.

By comparison to my own lunch it's practically tofu and salad-I have had a white scone with raisins and butter and jam followed by a mars bar rice krispie square..any redeeming features to that? !Grin Ds1 out for the day and ds2, 12 days has kindly slept through my gluttony.

TooOldForGlitter · 12/08/2015 15:41

I love the competitive food snobbery that comes out on threads like these. It's so funny Grin All this false horror at the idea of hoops on toast.

Who does your husband think he is OP? I suggest he prepares all the food for the children if he doesn't like what you've made for them and that he keeps his silly food obsessions to himself.

toofarfromcivilisation · 12/08/2015 15:41

To be honest I can't really see how this turned into a discussion!
Feeding children didn't used to be rocket science! You're not giving to them every day for every meal! Your OH needs to listen to what he's saying! I bet he loved them when he was little.
Shepherd's pie is fine! Would he object to an Italian dish involving basically the same ingredients but with pasta instead of potato as the carb?

talentedmrsripley · 12/08/2015 15:42

I honestly think it depends what the children's "typical" diet is.

The DH said (rudely) 'feeding the kids crap all the time'

There was a loaf of white bread in the house which suggests that's the default.

CrystalMcPistol · 12/08/2015 15:47

OH NO! Not......a......l..l..l..loaf of actual white bread!

to think there's nothing wrong with hoops on buttered toast for lunch?
ReginaFelangi · 12/08/2015 15:49

A slice of wholemeal toast spread with butter with half a tin of low sugar baked beans and a sprinkle of cheese is pretty much a perfect meal, nutrition wise. Has protein, good carbs, fat, fibre, vitamins.........

Spaghetti hoops on white toast, not so much.

toofarfromcivilisation · 12/08/2015 15:50

Oh....I didn't see the reference to a loaf of white bread. Hmm
Do we have the OP's address ? Maybe a health visitor should visit. Grin

ReginaFelangi · 12/08/2015 15:50

(White bread has more calcium than wholemeal, so it's not all bad. It's the mass production methods used now that render white bread less good than that our grandparents ate.)

CrystalMcPistol · 12/08/2015 15:51

I don't think the OP is claiming it's nutritionally perfect though is she?

forago · 12/08/2015 15:53

we had marmite on toast for lunch so dont worry about it. mix of white and wholemeal as that was what was left in the cupboard.

MuffMuffTweetAndDave · 12/08/2015 15:56

OP hasn't mentioned the age of the children, has she? Quite possible they're too young for much wholegrain yet.

talentedmrsripley · 12/08/2015 15:57

I didn't say that a HV should visit, did I?

The point is, white bread was in the house and that suggests it's what they 'normally' eat which does give some credence to the DH claiming the kids are fed crap.

chaiselounger · 12/08/2015 15:57

Tell him to shop for the week and prepare all the meals for the week as well.
Tell him to buy a pasta machine, make the pasta, plant and grow some tomatoes, make a home made organic tomato sauce. Bake bread. And then he can do his own hoops on toast, can't he?

TendonQueen · 12/08/2015 15:57

Never mind a health visitor. Should go straight to phoning social services if there's a loaf of white bread in the house! Wasn't there a story a few years back about wholemeal bread contributing to 'middle-class malnutrition' in that it can be too filling for the small stomachs of toddlers who need a higher calorie count in what they consume?

talentedmrsripley · 12/08/2015 15:58

You can do that, if you wish.

I just think it is crap and therefore agree with the DH. I don't think he mentioned SS, did he?

CrystalMcPistol · 12/08/2015 15:58

The OP's house is no better than a meth lab really with all that white bread lying around.
