to think there's nothing wrong with hoops on buttered toast for lunch?

It's not great, wholesome nutritious food is it. But it's nice, and comforting, and the weather's shit outside and they like it! And it's hardly a bucket of KFC.

Well, DH disagrees, and has just had a huff at me on the phone because I'm 'feeding the children crap all the time' Hmm

He's been on a health kick for the past month - homemade raw muesli for breakfast, the works. This has prompted a few discussions about the family's eating habits as a whole recently and he feels we could all do better. I agreed, and we've been reigning in the sugar, adding more veg etc.

But apparently these devil-hoops and the shepherd's pie I made for dinner last night are just a couple of examples of how I'm not really listening to his concerns. I don't really understand how a plate of homemade shepherd's pie and a pile of fresh veg doesn't constitute as at the very least wholesome food, but maybe I'm dead wrong.

So AIBU in thinking a can of spaghetti hoops on some buttered toast is the food of Gods?, along with a varied and healthy diet (aside from the plainly unhealthy shepherd's pie Confused), is perfectly fine, and that he needs to unbunch his Y-fronts?

It does.

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 12/08/2015 14:24

Deff go with lavender's suggestion Grin.

God, I love food snobbery on here. Reminds me of the Catherine Tate gooseberry yogurt sketch - 'mummy, I'm still trying to get my head around hummus'. I don't know if it's because I grew up 'working class', or in the 90's, but I honestly don't know when spaghetti hoops became such an issue! Quite sad actually, I blame Jaime bloody Oliver.

museumum · 12/08/2015 14:26

I actually don't know why anyone would choose hoops over beans.
Both have the same salt and sugar in the sauce but beans are far more nutritious than fake pasta and they keep you full longer.
[i love beans on toast]

LaurieMarlow · 12/08/2015 14:26

Hoops on toast is quite rubbishy. I don't see that it's wildly better than KFC. As someone else said, beans or eggs would be preferable.

Your DP is waaaay off mark with Shepherds pie though. Comforting, balanced, nutritious, delicious. There's tonight's dinner sorted

poocatcherchampion · 12/08/2015 14:28

Just had it for lunch. Yum

swooosh · 12/08/2015 14:30

I had this for dinner on Monday. I'm a fitness fanatic who counts macronutrients but sometimes you just cannot beat a bit of warming, comfort food!

readyforno2 · 12/08/2015 14:32

Definitely go with lavenders suggestion. Imo tinned pasta is rank but each to their own. Beans on the other hand... I'm doing the low carb bootcamp atm and beans on toast is what I'm missing the most!

RJnomore · 12/08/2015 14:33

I agree re quorn btw crystal. It's not even a real food. I judge mo farah...

AboutTimeIChangedMyNameAgain · 12/08/2015 14:33

There is nothing wrong with hoops on toast occasionally.

fuzzpig · 12/08/2015 14:37

MMMmmmmm hoops.

MuffMuffTweetAndDave · 12/08/2015 14:37

Personally I'd be more worried about his shepherd's pie comments. That's completely and utterly ridiculous, whereas there's sort of an argument to be made about the lunch. I mean, I don't think it's like giving them bread and crack or anything, but it's not brilliant- would prefer to give beans on toast if possible. But the potato comment is just wrong. Either way, if the family's diet is unacceptable to him, he's more than free to take over meal preparation. Although if he's got a problem with home cooked shepherd's pie I'm not sure I'd let him.

SolidGoldBrass · 12/08/2015 14:42

Just tell him that it's his turn to take care of all the catering for the next week. Refuse any further discussion.
He needs to be given a short sharp lesson to the effect that he is not in charge and cannot expect to be obeyed.

Aeroflotgirl · 12/08/2015 14:42

It's just I meal fgs, serve on wholemeal bread, fine in my book. How about, scrambled eggs, beans, jacket.

MilkChocolateButtons · 12/08/2015 14:43

Sounds yummy to me!!! It's the summer holidays, cooking twice a day is a lot of work so I always do one large meal and one light meal a day. Is Beans on toast or a sandwich.

SargeantAngua · 12/08/2015 14:44

I'm assuming you mash your potatoes with some milk or butter or similar and probably grate some cheese over the top? Sounds like standard food to me. Potatoes, bit of calcium etc, bit of protein? Not exactly poison.

fuzzpig · 12/08/2015 14:44

Can't beat a good shepherds pie (must add lamb mince to shopping list)

We often put sweet potato in with the regular spud when we do mash.

dementedpixie · 12/08/2015 14:45

dd likes them with toast as she doesn't like baked beans. They are actually 41% tomatoes which is probably why they count as 1 of your 5 a day (a whole tomato in each portion)

blueemerald · 12/08/2015 14:47

I love hoops on toast and have it maybe once a fortnight in winter. My DP sounds a bit like yours (very healthy living/eating and active, PE teacher and semi professional football referee) and he doesn't comment on it as a meal every once in a while.

I just read your OP to him (full disclosure: we don't have children) and he said his concern is that your children could be getting crazily over the top message about food which could lead to issues with food at either end of the spectrum (indulging or restricting) as teenagers/adults.

Glitteryarse · 12/08/2015 14:49

I'm going to go against the grain here....

But I agree with him. Get them a pasty next time - greggs do a good range Wine

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/08/2015 14:51

Ostentatious - it sounds as if you are teaching your children how to eat a good, balanced diet, where everything doesn't have to be hand-knitted, whole grain yoghurt packed with vitamins, fibre and virtue, and where a little of what you fancy, in proportion, is good for you!

MamaMotherMummy · 12/08/2015 14:54

By the way you can do sweet potato mash in shepherds pie which increases nutrient content considerably.

CrystalMcPistol · 12/08/2015 14:55

Decreases the flavour sadly.

Onecurrantbun · 12/08/2015 14:58

It's fine. Your DH is being precious. Ours have it for tea maybe once a month, I prefer them to have beans on toast but sometimes they ask for hoops instead. Would tend to do fruit for pud that day though.

There's also nothing wrong with an occasional KFC / McDonald's to be honest.

AmyLouKin · 12/08/2015 15:03

Personally I don't like tinned pasta but a lot of kids do. I would prob do beans on toast or cheesy beans, even better! I don't think it's a big deal though! I think he's being a bit daft! Nothing wrong with mashed tato (though my other half has to have bread with it and make a sandwich, which I still find a little odd!).
What's with all the quorn haters? Fine if u don't like the stuff but I'm guessing it's because someone made a veggie shepherds pie. I don't think she mentioned quorn! She could have made it with lots of other meat alternatives!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/08/2015 15:03

I put celeriac in my mash - I think that gives it a nice flavour.
