to think there's nothing wrong with hoops on buttered toast for lunch?

It's not great, wholesome nutritious food is it. But it's nice, and comforting, and the weather's shit outside and they like it! And it's hardly a bucket of KFC.

Well, DH disagrees, and has just had a huff at me on the phone because I'm 'feeding the children crap all the time' Hmm

He's been on a health kick for the past month - homemade raw muesli for breakfast, the works. This has prompted a few discussions about the family's eating habits as a whole recently and he feels we could all do better. I agreed, and we've been reigning in the sugar, adding more veg etc.

But apparently these devil-hoops and the shepherd's pie I made for dinner last night are just a couple of examples of how I'm not really listening to his concerns. I don't really understand how a plate of homemade shepherd's pie and a pile of fresh veg doesn't constitute as at the very least wholesome food, but maybe I'm dead wrong.

So AIBU in thinking a can of spaghetti hoops on some buttered toast is the food of Gods?, along with a varied and healthy diet (aside from the plainly unhealthy shepherd's pie Confused), is perfectly fine, and that he needs to unbunch his Y-fronts?

Hoops are crap. Full of sugar and salt. But they are tasty.

Just don't feed them alphabetti spaghetti...it could spell disaster!

paxtecum · 12/08/2015 13:55

He's a knob who doesn't know what he is talking about.

Potatoes have a good nutritional value.

greenhill · 12/08/2015 13:55

Is he making the homemade raw muesli himself and eating it all by himself? If so, he needs to buck his ideas up and prepare everything for the family by hand Grin

We had tinned spaghetti on white bread toast with mozzarella slices, followed by Greek yoghurt with blueberries. As part of a mixed, and usually completely healthy diet, it's nice to do something that takes minutes and gets eaten without complaint. The DC are going to have a woodland walk later to burn off some energy.

Dawndonnaagain · 12/08/2015 13:59

For crying out loud, hoops once in a while isn't going to hurt anyone, if it's not weekly it's fine. If he makes that much fuss tell him to come home and do it himself.

iklboo · 12/08/2015 14:01

He's not reading those 'men's health' magazines that are full of pseudo science bull is he? One month carbs are good, the next they're bad - 'you MUST buy this superfood, NEVER buy this superfood, these eye exercises will give you your 20/20 vision back' (I kid you not on that one).

DH fell for this twaddle for a while - until I kept pointing out all the flaws in the advertising articles.

theconstantvacuumer · 12/08/2015 14:03

It might be an old fashioned view but I think growing kids really need a good substantial meal like shepherds pie a few times a week!

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/08/2015 14:04

I really want this for tea now with cheese on top

slightlyconfused85 · 12/08/2015 14:05

It's fine as long as it's not lunch every day. I think most parents do this or freezer foods a couple of times a week; in moderation (like all foods) it's no big deal

slightlyconfused85 · 12/08/2015 14:07

Also he is being very unreasonable about the shepherds pie and veg! Isn't that a staple in many families? I don't cook it as my dd is a potato hater but do spag Bol and lasagne which is pretty similar

Eva50 · 12/08/2015 14:07

Mine are eating birds eye chicken burgers (the big, greasy ones with the crispy coating) at the moment and only ds2's roll is wholemeal. They have all added tomato ketchup as part of their 5 a day! The only complaining my dh would be doing is if there's not one for him.

CrystalMcPistol · 12/08/2015 14:08

'the mashed potato is fatty and salty and empty of goodness'.

Sounds like he's empty of brain cells.

Nothing worse than someone who's 'seen the light'. Whether it's with diet/God/sport.....

Nanny0gg · 12/08/2015 14:11

Hoops are nicer on bread and butter, rather than toast actually.

ThereIsIron · 12/08/2015 14:12

YAB slightly U ... it should really be Heinz Ravioli or Spaghetti Bolognese Grin

Artandco · 12/08/2015 14:12

Pasta on bread?? That's slightly bizarre no?

I wouldn't be impressed either tbh if Dh fed them this, a one off maybe, but I'm assuming your Dh knows that you have fed them that before hence the comment. To me a meal is a balance of carbs, protein, and veg. So the above wouldn't be a meal

Even just baked beans and a poached egg would be miles better

LavenderRain · 12/08/2015 14:12

I think you should buy some Alphabet Spaghetti and spell out
fuck off on some toast for DH's tea, Grin

Saltedcaramel2014 · 12/08/2015 14:17

If he cares so much, why doesn't he prepare their meals from scratch and leave them in the fridge or freezer for you to serve up. Job done.

Oliversmumsarmy · 12/08/2015 14:17

I do a vegetarian cottage pie + veg. Can I ask what he thinks you should be serving the kids in the evening that the kids would like to eat. Maybe he should do the cooking if you are so bad at it. See how long it takes him to get the kids to eat muesli in the morning.

Saltedcaramel2014 · 12/08/2015 14:17

Or what lavender said!

RJnomore · 12/08/2015 14:20

Well you could make shepherds pie with quorn mince and sweet potato ...

Nice of him to offer to do all the cooking wasn't it op?

nothruroad · 12/08/2015 14:21

I want hoops now but I've just had lunch. Maybe for dinner instead.

ReginaFelangi · 12/08/2015 14:21

Carbs in sugary sauce on top of carbs. Little protein.

I wouldn't.

CrystalMcPistol · 12/08/2015 14:21

Quorn is junk.

GummyBunting · 12/08/2015 14:21

Sorry, but I also recoil at pasta on bread. It's not worth getting worked up about though. If it were low salt hoops on wholemeal bread, I'd be happier though.

You could meet your DH half way and make shepherds pie topping from 1/2 mashed potatos and 1/2 mashed cauliflower. It's very tasty!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 12/08/2015 14:21

Homemade shepherds pie is what, meat and veggies with a tiny portion of butter and salt? Can't see anything wrong with that.

Hoops on toast is pretty crap though, very processed. This is going to sound poncetastic, but DS(9) pestered me for hoops so I got him some for a play date lunch. He actually couldn't eat them and thought they were disgustingly sweet. I think they are one of those insidious, palate ruining foods we should be more wary of.

CrystalMcPistol · 12/08/2015 14:22

Or he could meet her halfway and make the shepherd's pie next time?
