to think there's nothing wrong with hoops on buttered toast for lunch?

It's not great, wholesome nutritious food is it. But it's nice, and comforting, and the weather's shit outside and they like it! And it's hardly a bucket of KFC.

Well, DH disagrees, and has just had a huff at me on the phone because I'm 'feeding the children crap all the time' Hmm

He's been on a health kick for the past month - homemade raw muesli for breakfast, the works. This has prompted a few discussions about the family's eating habits as a whole recently and he feels we could all do better. I agreed, and we've been reigning in the sugar, adding more veg etc.

But apparently these devil-hoops and the shepherd's pie I made for dinner last night are just a couple of examples of how I'm not really listening to his concerns. I don't really understand how a plate of homemade shepherd's pie and a pile of fresh veg doesn't constitute as at the very least wholesome food, but maybe I'm dead wrong.

So AIBU in thinking a can of spaghetti hoops on some buttered toast is the food of Gods?, along with a varied and healthy diet (aside from the plainly unhealthy shepherd's pie Confused), is perfectly fine, and that he needs to unbunch his Y-fronts?

Yorksha - I want a 'Like' button for your post. I would far rather bring my children up with that sort of philosophy than one where a birthday cake - a once-a-year thing - still has to be an exercise in doing without and denial.

Applauds yorkshapudding a healthy attitude to food and eating a little of what you fancy does you good. "Everyday foods" and "once in a while foods" seems like a good explanation.

I hate all this low fat nonsense, because it means sugars have been added to make it palatable. The nearer things are to their component parts the better. And if that means, butter, sugar, eggs and flour in a cake that must be better than sweetener, refined palm oil and hydrolysed gloop.

Agree. Yorks speaks common sense.

I have a twelve year old who according to our paed is "ripe for anorexia" as she has ASD, sensory issues and no appetite to speak of at the best of times as well as huge anxiety and a need for control.
I despaired at some of the messages being given at our healthy eating awarded Primary and actually spoke to the HT and wrote to the dinner ladies telling them to back off with regards to what dd did or didn't eat.
I tend to be grateful when she eats and don't worry too much what she eats on any given day and consider a week or two's worth of food as a measure instead.I'd be delighted if she ate hoopson toast but she won't because the colour and the texture means she can't even put them on her plate.

Spaghetti hoops on toast is only allowed as a meal if you cut the toast up into small squares before you put the hoops on.

It's even better if you put Marmite on the toast as well and a sprinkling of grated cheese on top of the hoops.

I always buy those little tins of Thomas the Tank Engine and Peppa Pig pasta shapes for the foodbank, I'm sure children love them.

ourvye carob is healthier than cocoa as it is naturally sweet, as opposed to naturally bitter, which means far less sugar is needed.

FunnysInLaJardin · 15/08/2015 11:29

Heman yep they are the ones. Lovely. I used to eat them in the 70's too!

limitedperiodonly · 15/08/2015 11:34

There was carob in the food mix I bought for my gerbil. He ate everything but that.

I know he only had a brain the size of a pea but I'm going to follow his lead on that.
