sugar sandwiches are a fine after meal treat

A few times I've mentioned having sugar sandwiches after a (healthy) meal people look at me a bit strange. One even gasped.

I can't be the only one doing this right?

Doughnuts are rank, IMO. Cakes are nice though.
I don't think that there's that much sugar in sugared bread. It's only what sticks to the butter, most of it falls off. You can taste the butter more than the sugar.

Hagelslag is delicious and you get to choose what type of sprinkles take your fancy.

I can't help feeling that Brits have a lack of imagination when it comes to sprinkling sweet stuff on bread.

VulcanWoman · 10/08/2015 16:58

What about Condensed Milk sandwich.

rosy71 · 10/08/2015 17:01

A friend of mine used to often have sugar sandwiches - this would be around 1980. I always thought they sounded horrible. She also used to eat weetabix with butter on.

I did once try a syrup sandwich - it was disgusting.

thecatfromjapan · 10/08/2015 17:08

Perspicacia - that's what I was talking about up-thread! We had it for breakfast in Amsterdam. 'Little mice' on top of Nutella.

It really was a bit much.

Tinuviel · 10/08/2015 17:08

I used to love sugar sandwiches in the 1970s but I haven't had one for years. Now I really want one! If I sneak into the kitchen hopefully the DCs won't spot me and want one too - no way would I want my kids eating crap like that.Wink

saltnpepa · 10/08/2015 17:26

Crisp or fishfinger sandwiches hmmmmm

PatricianOfAnkhMorpork · 10/08/2015 17:29

I never did the sugar butty but love syrup sandwiches.

I do remember eating sugar lumps though, loved them!

faintlyoptimistic · 10/08/2015 17:34

My (very overweight) gran used to sneak us syrup sandwiches.

I did initially think bleugh when I saw the title but I'll often sprinkle sugar and cinnamon on top of warm buttered toast instead of jam. It is very, very good.

ExitPursuedByABear · 10/08/2015 17:37

Oh god yes, condensed milk sandwiches. I loved 'em

And sugar sandwiches

My mum used to eat jelly sandwiches.

Sigh

What you can't put between two pieces of bread isn't worth having.

Gruntfuttock · 10/08/2015 17:38

How revolting.

SchwarzwalderKirschtorte · 10/08/2015 17:40

We had sugar sandwiches at Girls' Brigade camp if we were still hungry after dinner.

I like a nice golden syrup sandwich. :)

Zame "I hope all the people who are just so appalled at this have banned all sugar from their diets?"

What a ludicrous OTT thing to say. Because I think the idea of sugar sandwiches is revolting, my diet should be totally sugar free?

lilacblossomtime · 10/08/2015 17:45

gruntfuttock well it's a small amount of sugar, probably about the same amount as in a biscuit or small piece of cake, or a blob of ketchup for that matter, so why is it any more disgusting than those things?

Gruntfuttock · 10/08/2015 17:55

Well I wouldn't eat a bowl of raw cake mixture, but I might like the cake that results from it. Can you not see any difference between liking something in one form but not in another? Confused

Maybe it's because some people think it is disgusting because sugar is so unhealthy (it's as addictive as crack cocaine you know) and some people think it just sounds like a disgusting thing to eat (marmite).

drinkscabinet · 10/08/2015 18:21

Well I've discovered something today, some people don't like sweet stuff on bread. Wow. Honey on freshly made crusty homemade bread is one of the greatest foodstuffs ever. Yum.

Had cinnamon toast and it is delicious, but sugar sandwich does sound quite... traditional. Not something to pull a face about though.

UniS · 10/08/2015 18:22

My gran used to give us sugar sandwiches ( and condensed milk sandwiches). BLISS.

Woolyheads · 10/08/2015 19:03

We had sugar sandwiches. We were quite happy with them. I've never tried them on my DS but I think he would enjoy them.

StellaAlpina · 10/08/2015 19:24

My nonna used to make me them occassionally for a treat. Also chocolate sandwiches! Bit of chocolate bar in a crusty roll - I still like those now, makes the chocolate less sickly sweet.

FenellaFellorick · 10/08/2015 19:26

Wouldn't a sugar sandwich taste awful? All gritty and crunchy.

FenellaFellorick · 10/08/2015 19:27

oh, don't get me wrong, there's very little I wouldn't slap between two slices of bread (I bet I'm worse than anyone on this thread Grin ) but sugar would feel awfully weird on the teeth.

CallMeExhausted · 10/08/2015 19:41

I have never had one, hadn't occurred to me that it'd be something to do.

However...

As a girl, one of my favourite special treats to make for myself was cinnamon toast. Just a simple slice of toast with butter, a light sprinkle of sugar and a dusting of cinnamon.

I introduced my DCs to it, too. It is now something we do once or twice a year, usually on a cold weekend morning when the chill goes right through you.

In all reality, a "sugar sandwich" quite possibly is less unhealthy than a plate of biscuits or a piece of cake (provided, of course, that the butter and sugar are not applied with a trowel and a shovel Grin )
