sugar sandwiches are a fine after meal treat

A few times I've mentioned having sugar sandwiches after a (healthy) meal people look at me a bit strange. One even gasped.

I can't be the only one doing this right?

I put sugar on eggy bread. I don't have a problem with it.

starlight2007 · 10/08/2015 10:02

I have never made my Ds but do remember it vaguely from the 70's..My initial reaction was to giggle not at the suggestion but you asked on mumsnet of all places

Sootgremlin · 10/08/2015 10:04

I used to have sugar on bread and butter growing up. Wouldn't think of doing it now, seems a bit daft. Yes the same ingredients as cake, but not as nice Confused. I'd like my kids to get maximum enjoyment from their calories!

I had to have extractions under GA and fillings when I was 7 (milk teeth).

My children have fruit and plain yoghurt after dinner, or just bread and butter.

Jam sandwiches, Nutella sandwiches, ice cream, cake and chocolate are eaten, but in moderation as they should be. Not presented as a massive treat, but not denied if the occasion suits.

Has anyone mentioned banana and sugar sandwiches? We were desperately poor and had these for tea rather a lot in the early 90s. My DH eats banana sandwiches now without sugar, which just feels wrong to me!

hstar1995 · 10/08/2015 10:08

Ooh I used to love strawberries with sugar. Only over nans though, when I was at home there was no sugar on fruit (I used to ask for it at home and told that I was only allowed over nans). if it wasn't for weight and needing to look after my teeth I'd still eat strawberries and sugar now

pomegranatesandfilms · 10/08/2015 10:09

bumptheelephant I think they may not have been as sweet. Things like sprouts are now sweeter than before. They choose varieties with better flavours and sweetness now.

GI has to be taken in context if you have wholemeal bread with butter. So carb and protein sprinkled with a teaspoon of sugar and some cinnamon and it's eaten after a big bowl of fibre rich soup it will be better for your GI index then white bread with honey as a snack on its own.

Everything in moderation.

VulcanWoman · 10/08/2015 10:14

Yoga, sugar has nothing to do with causing Acne FYI.

Snozberry · 10/08/2015 10:17

My nan still puts sugar on strawberries, she covers them in sugar and leaves them to soak. I loved it as a kid but don't let my toddler eat them like that as she'd then refuse to eat unsugared ones.

shockedballoon · 10/08/2015 10:22

Another one who used to eat banana and sugar sandwiches!

Also used to have 'bananas in milk' for pudding - sliced banana, full cream milk & sprinkled with sugar.

My go to snack when I came home from school used to be a 'cakey-butty': slice a doorstop hunk off a white loaf, slather in proper butter and top with generous swirls of golden syrup. Yum!

Am 40 (so not 'old', yes?) and grew up in the north.

hotCocolepew · 10/08/2015 10:23

Bump you should come to my house , I never eat strawberries without sugar.

noeffingidea · 10/08/2015 10:27

We used to have bread and butter with sugar on, never in a sandwich though. It's what poor people used to eat. I still have the odd slice occassionally.
I'm surprised Dutch people eat it as part of their normal diet though.
My Mum also used to make chocolate spread out of butter, sugar and cocoa. We all loved that.

Hello diabetes!!!!!

HemanOrSheRa · 10/08/2015 10:41

Off the top of my head I can think of:

Bread and Butter Pudding
Summer Pudding
Bread Pudding
Treacle Tart

All use bread, sugar and butter. Except bread pudding. I don't add butter to that. Just a ton of dried fruit Smile.

MeganTrainer · 10/08/2015 10:41

Never had a sugar sarnie but Golden Syrup sandwiches are lovely. White bread, proper butter. Mmmm.

AuntieDee · 10/08/2015 10:44

I used to have sugar butties as a kid, and honey ones too. It's not the end of the world and lots less sugar than in many other treats.

Mind you my favourite unhealthy 'treat' is bacon toast - pop white bread at the bottom of the grill tray and grill your bacon. Once the bacon it cooked, toast the juicy bread mmmmm

It's all about moderation. I cook from scratch with no added salt and minimal sugar, I source locally from farms and only buy meat that I know has been slaughtered locally and elthically. I have what most would call a healthy diet - I do still love the odd unhealthy treat though. It's only an issue if it is a regular thing.

BertrandRussell · 10/08/2015 10:47

This really is fascinating.

Do the people being horrified about a sugar sandwich forbid bread and honey too? Or the occasional doughnut or slice of cake? There is significantly more sugar in a slice of home made cake than in a sugar sandwich!

FuzzyWizard · 10/08/2015 10:50

There's no way this is worse than a doughnut. Doughnuts are made with an enriched dough so already have butter and sugar in. They are then deep fried and either coated with sugar and filled with jam or topped with sugary icing. I'd say sugar sandwiches are preferable actually as there's no illusion about exactly how much butter and sugar it contains.

thecatfromjapan · 10/08/2015 10:51

Bertrand, I think very few people ARE outraged. I think most posters have spotted that OP is on a wind-up, trying to upset the mums - which is VERY patronising - and are deliberately not responding with outrage.

I'm finding it quite interesting. My guess is that most of us haven't thought "troll! Don't feed" but have responded more subconsciously.

Christinayanglah · 10/08/2015 10:53

Everything in moderation, ds has a health, balanced and varied diet so if he fancies a slice of cake or a bowl of ice cream then fair enough, I try not to make food a big issue. I enjoy a nice coffee and cake sometimes so why wouldn't he?

I wouldn't have a sugar sandwich purely because I just don't fancy it

thecatfromjapan · 10/08/2015 10:54

Actually, 'trolling' might be too strong. It's more about eliciting a slew of responses through the presentation of a deliberately heightened and linear opinion. So not completely fictive.

PerspicaciaTick · 10/08/2015 10:54

Brown sugar sandwiches are crunchy and yummy and I haven't had one since I was a child. I don't think it is a problem as a once in a blue moon treat - like Australians eating fairy bread now and then.

thecatfromjapan · 10/08/2015 10:57

Anyway, it's generated some interesting chat. I had no idea about Australians and 'fairy bread'. How cute.
