sugar sandwiches are a fine after meal treat

A few times I've mentioned having sugar sandwiches after a (healthy) meal people look at me a bit strange. One even gasped.

I can't be the only one doing this right?

I've not had banana sandwiches for years, my mum used to bake a wholemeal loaf, slice it thickly and then add the sliced banana, no sugar or butter though.

ShelaghTurner · 10/08/2015 11:01

I'm not horrified in any way. I just think it's criminal waste of sweetness when there are lovely things like jam and cake you could use your sugar intake on!

Poofus · 10/08/2015 11:02

I prefer chocolate sandwiches. A square of hard dark chocolate between 2 pieces of soft bread. Delicious!

ShelaghTurner · 10/08/2015 11:03

Banana sandwiches are gorgeous. Was beginning to think it was an Irish thing as DH is properly horrified at the thought and won't even try them. We alway had them for tea. No sugar in banana sandwiches though, just butter.

I was very underweight as a child and Mum was told by our GP to give me sugar sandwiches to help me gain weight. It has left me with a terribly sweet tooth which has caused me problems as an adult. I wouldn't give them to a child because of this.

MeganTrainer my dearly loved grandmother used to make me syrup sandwiches as a treat: thick white bread, thick salty butter, lots of lovely golden syrup. I don't think I've ever tasted anything as delicious since, but it's been years since I've had one.

Costacoffeeplease · 10/08/2015 11:36

Slimy butter and gritty sugar on bread? Sounds foul, no thanks

Costacoffeeplease · 10/08/2015 11:37

No, no butter in banana sandwiches, bleurgh!

Saracarbonera · 10/08/2015 11:40

A woman I work with has a slice of bread with olive oil and sugar on it every morning for breakfast.

RabbitSaysWoof · 10/08/2015 11:45

I think it's fine.

Alchemist · 10/08/2015 11:46

Fairy bread was my favourite - from NE.

My Grandma used to give me a knob of butter rolled in sugar to cure any coughs or sore throats. That was vile but did stop the coughing for a bit.

bigbumtheory · 10/08/2015 11:53

I love sugar but sugar sandwiches...urg. Plus it adds more carbs after a good dinner, seems odd to me. But then I'd only eat cake for afternoon or morning snack, not with main meals.

hstar1995 · 10/08/2015 11:53

Banana on toast is lush Grin. Toasted bread, butter, bits of banana but folded over to make a sandwich. Divine and healthy breakfast!

CarlaJones · 10/08/2015 11:54

Not read the other replies, but we used to have treacle sandwiches and milk mixed with ribena in the 70s.

Fizzielove · 10/08/2015 11:55

My dad used to make us these when my mum was at work! Brings back fond childhood memories!

EygptianSnow · 10/08/2015 11:57

Sugar in a sandwich wtf

Crabstick · 10/08/2015 11:59

My dad used to butter bread, sprinkle with sugar and pop under the grill. This was in the 80's. Its lush!

Drivinghomeforchristmasornot · 10/08/2015 12:02

Golden syrup sandwiches-yum

MaidOfStars · 10/08/2015 12:05

I am struggling to think of a food preparation that epitomises "empty calories"....

Bread, butter, sugar. What's the point?

MaidOfStars · 10/08/2015 12:06

Sorry, that sounded way judgier than I intended. I mean, obviously the point is that some people think it tastes nice, and I'm all for eating delicious but unhealthy food for no other reason than "want".

I guess it seems like a rather grim pursuit of "something sweet".

StayWithMe · 10/08/2015 12:11

Blimey, I forgot about syrup sandwiches. I used to love them as a child. True luxury was getting a jam and sugar sandwiches. Sets my teeth on edge just thinking about it. Grin

Blimey, it makes me realise how sweets, cakes and biscuits have become the norm now, compared to when I was a child.

gamerchick · 10/08/2015 12:15

Sugar sarnies in the 80s along with banana and sugar sarnies for packed lunch. I still like and orange chopped up and dipped in sugar now occasionally. Grin

Funny how this was common in the 70s and 80s and we didn't have that many fat kids as we do now but people are disgusted... Overreaction much Hmm

Why you would want you t after a meal is beyond me. Is that a way of telling your hosts their portion sizes suck?

Peaceloveandcustardcreams · 10/08/2015 12:18

Ah yes DH has butter in his banana sandwiches, but I would have just had banana and sugar. I don't eat them now - the thought makes me feel a bit sick Envy
I do love cinnamon and brown sugar grilled on toast, though!

StayWithMe · 10/08/2015 12:19

I think it's, partly, because people are not used to making their own treats. It's mostly processed, so they don't see the sugar, so they can kid themselves they're not eating crap. ignoring the fact I now live on junk

Peaceloveandcustardcreams · 10/08/2015 12:19

Also, we are both from the south of England, if that makes a difference to demographics!
