A few times I've mentioned having sugar sandwiches after a (healthy) meal people look at me a bit strange. One even gasped.

I can't be the only one doing this right?

My grandad had that as a treat for him and us - its a Northern thing i think. Took me back !

My dad gave us bread and butter to dip into a bowl of condensed milk. For tea. As in our meal when we got in from school. This was in the late 70's, (and my mum was out!)

Ego, sounds good.

Boarding school memories - sugar on toast with lashings of butter marg. Wouldn't bother now though - there are more appealing options on offer!

I was always given 'bread and sugar' when visiting my nan. We loved it. Thick chunk of bread and butter with sugar sprinkled while holding it over the sugar bowl.
The other option was bread and dripping.
I will say though 'I'm healthy, never been in hosp (other than giving birth) and not over weight!

DS was given 'fairy bread' all the way through nursery - 100s and 1000s on bread and butter. It was only 15 years ago!

We used to make sugar butties, our Mum had not idea as we did it when she wasn't looking.

You press half a slice of bread into the sugar in the sugar bowl, fold it and eat it.

I'm not horrified by the idea but I don't think I'd like it. The texture probably.

My dad used to eat banana and honey sandwiches. But then he also dips his toast in tea so he's clearly a bit of a weirdo! Wink

Yep to it being very 70s . I had a few in the 70s but would I now ? Nope

Soggy1979 · 11/08/2015 16:53

I used to put sugar on bread and then put it under the grill when I was younger Smile

My husband and siblings loved this as a quick snack after school. But wouldn't eat it now. It was instant energy! His brother also liked condensed milk this way and straight from the can!!!
