sugar sandwiches are a fine after meal treat

A few times I've mentioned having sugar sandwiches after a (healthy) meal people look at me a bit strange. One even gasped.

I can't be the only one doing this right?

I'm disgusted because they taste gross, not because of kids. I'd just have spoonful of sugar instead, much tastier.

gamerchick · 10/08/2015 12:25

I don't remember them tasting gross. I clearly remember them being a treat and a welcome one at that.

You're probably right stay it's easier to live on the stuff that's not that good for you but fine occasionally these days.

Mimigolightly · 10/08/2015 12:30

Why just after meals?

My dad used to give them to me when I was little (mid-70's) for lunch when my mum was at work Grin And he used to pour the sugar that was not stuck to the bread back into the sugar bowl. My mum could never understand why there were bits of butter in it and we never told her Grin

AmberNectarine · 10/08/2015 12:33

Christ, that sounds grim.

But then I would no sooner eat a jam, Nutella or honey sandwich. Sandwiches should be savoury!

OldBloodCallsToOldBlood · 10/08/2015 12:38

I have sliced banana on top of cinnamon toast.

I don't remember ever having a sugar butty, but I do remember my nan giving me a sugar puff butty once. That was interesting.

bigbumtheory · 10/08/2015 12:39

gamerchick, I think some people like really really sweet things. My nan used to ply us with them and my sister lapped up but for me, no gross urg- always. Nan feeds her grand babies them and some like them but cousin's toddler is definitely in the 'gross' with me. Sometimes things can be too sweet, for me nutella=grim, golden syrup = grim.

I like sweet things, but not super sweet. Wine has to be dry etc.

juicynectarines · 10/08/2015 12:49

Australians love fairy bread - Google it. An absolute staple at kids parties. Basically the same as sugar sandwiches. Nothing wrong with it!!

CiderwithBuda · 10/08/2015 12:52

I used to have slices of bread with butter and sugar when I was a child too.

And banana sandwiches.

And banana sliced in a bowl and sprinkled with sugar and then milk poured on and it all mashed up a bit.

And I still love a crisp sandwich. Especially with Tayto cheese and onion crisps. Sometimes with a slice of cheese. Yum. Proper irish Tayto crips and Brennans bread. And Galtee cheese. All basics when I was growing up in Dublin.

hotCocolepew · 10/08/2015 12:53

I love a banana sandwich, but no butter and the banana mashed rather than sliced. My brother used to out sugar on his.

Golden syrup is lovely on white toasted bread. My dad still lives on syrup sandwiches, he even puts it on ryvita.

Bosschopsbitch · 10/08/2015 12:59

Oh sugar butties! That takes me back! It was a thing back in my childhood (I'm a northern lass!) Real butter, white bread and a teaspoon of sugar sprinkled on top!! Bloody lovely! I'm sure if I suggested one to my 6 yr old he'd love it too.... Real sugar is the only way foward in my house. We don't do sweeteners. And don't do low fat.

Bosschopsbitch · 10/08/2015 13:01

Oh and Pobs! Slices of bread bread cut into pieces, warm milk and sprinkled with sugar.....when we'd run out of cereal or were unwell. Again I think it's a northern thing. We're pretty resourceful Grin

belgina · 10/08/2015 13:08

I used to have them as a child, preferably with brown sugar. I can't see why it would be gross. Jam is full of sugar too! In fact when I first moved to the UK from Belgium, way back in '99, people thought putting chocolate on bread was yuk too. But now Nutella is considered perfectly normal. 16y ago I was considered a weird foreigner though.

itmightwork · 10/08/2015 13:09

Yum. I remember Weetabix spread with butter and then sugar sprinkled on top.....sigh

AdoraBell · 10/08/2015 13:21

Shock mashed banana in a sandwich???? Envy

No, no, no. It must be neatly sliced and piled high in the sarnie. < gavel>

I did used to love a digestive biccie or three with a nice thick layer of ice cold butter Grin

AuntieDee · 10/08/2015 13:32

Here's one for you!

Take a pudding bowl and smother with butter.
Coat the butter with brown sugar.
Take white bread (without crusts) and butter and sugar both sides
Cut into triangles to make assembly easier
Line the pudding basin
Fill with brownie mix
Top with more butter and sugared bread
Bake at 160o in the centre of a preheated oven for about 1 hour - 1hour 15 mins

Turn out and slice.

The breadded outside will be crispy, the browny, well browny like, but the centre should still be slightly runny

This is BLISS as a dessert and so easy

KateBuryUK · 10/08/2015 13:49

it's only the same as an iced bun.

BrumpyGollocks · 10/08/2015 13:59

My mum and aunties ate sugar sandwiches as children, they also had bread with dripping and banana sandwiches,I've not tried any of these .
We did have slices of apple with a teaspoon of sugar to dip the apple in on a Sunday as a treat though.

I also remember as a child my Df cooking bacon with fresh green beans and pouring the bacon fat over the beans.

sarah861421 · 10/08/2015 15:12

Confession time, I have the occasional sugar sandwich. It is usually when I am feeling very down or have had a bad day ( 2 or 3 times a year ). My ( teenage ) children are horrified, but it makes me feel so much better afterwards. Its a lots less sugar than a can of coke!

tilliebob · 10/08/2015 15:27

I remember eating sugar on buttered toast when I was little at my granny's (1970's). No wonder my teeth are fecked. I couldn't eat that now though Shock

hejhej · 10/08/2015 15:30

I doubt the odd sugar sand witch has fucked your teath. Jam and juice does more damage.

The amount of sugar that goes into a slice of cake, sugar sandwich is vastly healthier.

Cinnamon toast, anybody?

Hmm googles

www.nigella.com/recipes/view/cinnamon-toast-875

You are a very naughty MNetter Grin. There goes the diet Sad

Zame · 10/08/2015 15:42

I hope all the people who are just so appalled at this have banned all sugar from their diets?
It's the same as eating a doughnut or a cake or whatever the fuck else you people eat for pudding.

MaidOfStars · 10/08/2015 15:46

It's the same as eating a doughnut or a cake

Doughnuts and cakes look pretty, smell delicious, taste nice, feel good.

Sugar on bread seems, as I mentioned above, a rather joyless and grimly determined experience.

BertrandRussell · 10/08/2015 16:40

Lurkinghusband- fresh white bread- cut about half an inch thick. Spread the butter mixture right up to the edges, and have a strong cappuccino to dip the crusts in. Be really careful not to burn it- it goes very suddenly. And the sugar mixture is very hot indeed - watch that if you let children share. I wouldn't, if I were you. Too dangerous for them.

thecatfromjapan · 10/08/2015 16:42

MaidofStars is right. There isn't really the same freedom for an arpeggio of pleasure in a slice of bread with sugar as there is with something of slightly more complexity. 'Grimly determined' is exactly right. WhT a very neat description.
