I know this sounds absolutely ridiculous - recently joined and have posted a few times but find it scary Blush .
I thought I was well-educated albeit a young mum, but reading some threads makes me feel scared Apprehensive to post .
I'm being silly aren't I?! Or do I belong on a certain other site instead haha!

Is anybody else suddenly sentimental for 'just words on a screen'?
No?
Just me then.

I'm out tonight, proper out, no DCs, no DH, just friends GrinWine

I must admit it can be intimidating at first.

I joined from finding a thread on reclaiming PPI (yes really!) under a different username about 3-4 years ago and I recall once I posted something I think about Breton t-shirts and an opinion and I got jumped on like you wouldn't believe and almost left - after that the other posters admitted they'd either been harsh or some other MNers told me others could be harsh and to ignore it.

I don't post much on AIBU or reply to it… actually I've found it less 'ragey' recently - safer boards are Chat, The Litter Tray (if you have a cat!), S&B, Relationships are good.

what is amazing about MN is that if you really are being a bitch or nasty to someone you soon get pulled up over it, either on the boards or by a message so I think most people tend to try to be nice. OK you'll get the odd home truth, someone who disagrees with you but not everyone you'll gel with, that's life.

If you see a friendly poster/username you like the sound of when you see their posts reply or join in. some people here are sadly a bit hostile to newcomers so there is nothing wrong at all in posting that you are new here. Smile

also remember that there's a lot of gossip and rumour-mongering sometimes, par for the course really - either ignore or indulge.

like with most of the internet and chat rooms don't take it too seriously.

I really would not announce being new, there's no need.

CrystalMcPistol · 09/08/2015 18:22

OP MN is full of miserable, bossy harridans (me included). But even bossy harridans have their lighter side.

The live X Factor threads always make me hoot, full of very quick witted and inclusive sorts with a passion for the artist known as Christopher Maloney.

Hahahahaha, gold star for Welshmaenad! Star Star Star

Think of it as a bunch of scary friends who will help you if they think you are genuinely in trouble. They are quick to call bullshit

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 09/08/2015 19:02

Yeah I'll think of it that way dexra :)

And as with all scary friends sometimes you may need to take a break from them for a bit or take what they say with a pinch of salt and not engage them.

Spartans · 09/08/2015 19:09

I found the same when I joined years ago. I had no clue what the fuck Pom bears was all about and couldn't follow most conversations.

Give it a few months and it will all make sense. I joined around the Trexing round the supermarket thread. After a while you get the jokes referring to past threads, get the language etc.

Got to be honest though, MN has made me see a lot of things from different points of view, than I did before.

Mn made me a better person Grin

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 09/08/2015 20:53

That's true - I see lots of different opinions reading the threads Smile

Have a read of the classics section- it will help you make sense of pom bears etc. There is also an incredibly funny thread about a tiny Korean lady in there too!

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 09/08/2015 21:08

Ah thank you March

And one about a plastic cup and a penis which is not funny at all.

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 09/08/2015 21:13

I just choked on my ice lolly reading that haha!!

SuperFlyHigh · 09/08/2015 21:17

Spartans I still don't know what Pom bears are about apart from crisps…

the language does take time as does spotted the 'respected members'.

My faves so far were some nutty poster who may have been a troll who worked with cheese… and also a classic - I was on when the MNer spotted Liz Jones at a party hoovering up something… that was a classic!

Sparklingbrook · 09/08/2015 21:18

Pom Bears was some old cobblers about a dinner party or something.
