easy jet won't replace my ipad that they broke on the hold

I had a short flight with easy jet. However I was told as boarding the plane my hand luggage would have to go on the hold. I said I couldn't do this as was carrying delicate and fragile items (musical equipment). They told me I had no choice.

So I took on board what I could hold in my hands and the rest had to go on the hold. Every thing was fine apart from my iPad. Cracked screen so unusable.

I've been chasing them for 4 months and still they count it as resolved and won't replace it for me. Aibu to think that they should.

I know we're talking about Easyjet in original post, but Ryanair only have spaces for 90 bags in the overhead lockers, so if you have hand baggage that needs to go overhead and won't fit under the seat in front, you need to board early. Anyone arriving later runs the risk of their bag being taken into the hold. It's always worth having at the very least a plastic carrier bag In your pocket. Ryanair's policy is actually better than Easyjet, as they now allow 2 pieces of hand baggage - one full sized (ie for overhead lockers) and one smaller handbag or carrier, to go underneath the seat. It's hard for the crew, as quite often (selfish) people will stick small bags and rucksacks up in the lockers, meaning less space for bigger bags.

I think you're getting an unnecessarily hard time OP. I travel a lot, and know the exact situation you're talking about. Everyone else had too much luggage and so you can't take yours with you. Why they don't just allow everyone the amount they can guarantee in the cabin is beyond me. This causes problems on almost every flight I get on.

Also I hardly ever get travel insurance. If I got it every time I travelled, I'd have paid WAY above the value of anything I own in insurance fees. Whether it's smart to get insurance depends on many factors. I also don't buy insurance for things I could theoretically afford to replace. But if someone else broke those things I'd still try and get them to replace...

Unfortunately I think you won't have luck with Easyjet. I'd go for one last try, emailing the head office with the details of how often you've flown in the past two years, and tell them you'll be flying with someone else in future.

Not if you got annual insurance. FWIW my ds's girlfriend got taken ill the week before their holiday. Not only was their holiday cancelled, but her holiday with her family a few weeks later had to be cancelled as well. DS £15 holiday insurance was well worth it and he also gets bogof at the cinema now for that £15. DS gf is covered under the family annual policy.

schokolade · 06/08/2015 08:04

Depends where you live and where your passport's from bruffin...

SoupDragon · 06/08/2015 08:04

That's exactly the same as Easyjet.

carmellas3 · 06/08/2015 08:05

I can imagine the inconvenience/panic of trying to pull out all your valuables with a Ryanair person standing over you waiting to whisk your case away because they want to get the plane loaded and moving. And then you have to get on juggling everything in your hands/pockets.

That's exactly it, imagine doing that on the tarmac and in the wind!

With all the antidotal s here I'm surprised the holiday insurance industry is still running.

carmellas3 · 06/08/2015 08:11

Seeing as this thread is way off topic I may as well join in.

If I get killed on holiday and no one else knows that I've got travel insurance and all the paperwork is in my email. Would this travel insurance be used? Is it looked up?

OP posts:
Roussette · 06/08/2015 08:16

I've done it more than once. I open my hand luggage, I take out my tablet, my Ereader and anything else I consider as valuable. I put it in a carrier bag. Hardly difficult...

OP you take your risk, your choice. I don't think pp's are making it up. It happens. Accidents, illness, strokes etc. Fact of life. You talk of all your assets - I'm just surprised it can't run to £13 to cover you for the year as quoted on MoneySavingExpert for an annual european travel insurance policy. That's the price of two visits to Pret for coffee and sarnies.

swimmerforlife · 06/08/2015 08:18

Yes it was stupid to not have travel but I think EasyJet should pay up as they inconvenienced her by not having enough room for her luggage in the overhead lockers.

Roussette · 06/08/2015 08:21

I don't think the likes of EJ or Ryanair worry too much about the inconveniencing! They do not guarantee all the hand luggage of all the passengers will be able to go in the cabin.

diddl · 06/08/2015 08:29

I don't think that it's lack of room in the overhead lockers-dpending on the bag you still might take an ipad out.

It's more the just expected to take out what you can carry.

tobysmum77 · 06/08/2015 08:29

Would travel insurance pay out on this anyway? I don't understand all the insurance/ repatriation points on a thread about an ipad Confused .

I'd give it a go op, but I wouldn't be any more optimistic if I did have insurance personally as I think they would say putting an ipad in the hills was negligent.

tobysmum77 · 06/08/2015 08:30

the hold it would be negligent to leave it on a hill also Grin

Roussette · 06/08/2015 08:35

On quite a few flights I travel on, the airline know they are going to have too many bags for the cabin and walk down the queue offering free hold baggage if people will put their luggage in. Unfortunately, no one really wants to take it up which means that those at the end of the queue have to put their hand luggage in the hold as there is no room. So if you are at the end, you know this is going to happen.

MaidOfStars · 06/08/2015 08:38

tobysmum I don't think you'd tell the insurance company that you did anything negligent....

tobysmum77 · 06/08/2015 08:42

So you'd have to lie to the insurance company? Now according to a lot of mnetters that would be theft Wink

Pipbin · 06/08/2015 08:55

I agree though that they shouldn't offer every adult passenger baggage space to the size of x when they couldn't honor it if everyone actually took them up on it.

BA have just reduced the size of their guaranteed cabin bag. However they do say that if your bag is below that size then they guarantee that you can take it on board, along side a handbag/laptop case.

carmellas3 · 06/08/2015 09:00

So your saying I should buy insurance and next holiday pretend it happens there, lol joke!

tobysmum77 · 06/08/2015 09:11

hahaha carmella but you would well get flamed for that Grin . Are you going away again in the near future? Perhaps you could invent a mugging?

Roussette · 06/08/2015 09:18

I hate insurance fraudsters - it just puts up premiums and I hope they get caught. The industry is pretty hot on it now I think.

WorktoLive · 06/08/2015 09:29

I do feel for the OP. Unless it has happened to you before, you don’t pack your hand luggage expecting it to go in the hold and therefore needing to be much better protected. There is also the issue of valuables being stolen from hold luggage, which does happen.

I read on another forum about someone in a similar situation who had had several hundred Euros stolen from a case that had been taken by the airline and put in the hold at the last minute. In this situation, it is easy to forget exactly what is in your case when you are taking valuable or delicate things out in a rush.

And, as others have pointed out, it is possible that insurance wouldn’t have helped anyway as they say you have to keep your valuables with you.

A crappy situation all round unfortunately.

JohnCusacksWife · 06/08/2015 09:32

I always make sure I have a copy of my policy details along with my passport. I know you think travel insurance is a waste of time but I really do urge you to think about it. Raising money to bring a loved one home when you don't even know if they are going to live or die is horrific. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

tobysmum77 · 06/08/2015 09:37

Yes exactly work to live, its a split second when they tell you the bag is going in the hold. All very easy to think about it for 5 minutes then post on mn but the problem is by the time the op thought 'oh shite' it was too late to do anything.

It or something similar could happen to any one of us.

Interestingly the insurance point, my brother was robbed abroad a few years ago. He and his mates came back pissed and forgot to lock their appartment door. He had a watch taken off his wrist and the insurance company refused to pay out because they were negligent. The idea that insurance pays for any daft mishap you have outside the uk is naive in the extreme.

JessBear123 · 06/08/2015 09:45

I haven't read all of the thread so I don't know if it has been mentioned. Easyjet has two different sizes for hand luggage and the bigger size may have to go in the hold if there is no space.

And also not having travel insurance is crazy! For the sake of a few pounds there really is no need to not have it.

ReginaFelangi · 06/08/2015 09:46

It boils down to negligence at the end of the day. We don't know whether the screen cracked due to lack of pressure/temp in the hold or if it was from being in a case that was handled roughly. In the first instance the OP is negligent for letting it go in the hold. In the second the baggage handlers wouldn't expect there to be anything fragile in the bag (as passengers are advised to keep valuable and fragile items with them) so would handle it however they needed to to get it onto/off the plane as quickly as required. Again, not negligent.

You've nowhere to go with this, OP.
