to think its hypocritical to be outraged about Cecil the Lion?

I think it's disgusting what happened and upsetting.

I'm also a vegetarian and I'm starting to become a vegan now too.

Why are people so outraged by the death of a lion when they probably ate meat the same day?

So because a cow/pig/chicken maybe isn't as interesting or as exotic as a lion it's life is less valuable?

I'm not preaching for people to become vegetarians because its a very personal choice and a big lifestyle change. But aibu to think it's hypocritical to be outraged over a lion when you probably contribute to another animals suffering daily?

You aren't allowed to mention the other threads Purple.

Oh and i can say my cats don't kill birds or cats, they are the biggest wosses ever.

screenjunkie · 02/08/2015 00:05

Wow, Kat Von D is a super famous talented tattooist/designer who said more or less the same as you did on her FB page, offending and alienating thousands of her fans.

Really "wow"? I don't really follow celebrities because I have no interest in them. If you do then good for you.

Well done to her for saying something that is not a popular opinion, at least she stands up for what she believes in.

We are omnivores, Screenjunkie because we can get energy from eating plants AND vegetables.

The fact that we can means that we have evolved to be able to do so.

There is no "right or wrong" in terms of meat eating or not. The right or wrong comes from our invented morality, not from biology.

We can eat meat...so why shouldn't we?

Luckyfellow · 02/08/2015 00:10

Evidence humans have evolved to eat meat and vegetation - our teeth, our digestive tracts.

screenjunkie · 02/08/2015 00:12

I can tell you that no pretend-cheese is anything other than disgusting

I've actually bought some which is really nice. It will never be as good as the real thing but as subs go its not too bad.

I need to research toothpaste as well.

Did you know there is a thread on this OP?

.......

screenjunkie · 02/08/2015 00:16

Luckyfellow I do not believe that to be true so lets agree to disagree.

If you do ever have any spare time I'd recommend watching the below documentary.

screenjunkie · 02/08/2015 00:17

Fuck sake Purple why didn't you tell me sooner?!?!?

OP posts:
LemonCream · 02/08/2015 00:21

Bit out of order to accuse people of being hypocrites, and then back track with a syrupy "let's agree to disagree". Not to mention avoiding tough questions.

Are you outraged at a lion killing a gazelle, given the gazelle's "right to life"?

GraysAnalogy · 02/08/2015 00:21

I do not believe that to be true so lets agree to disagree

You don't believe our bodies have evolved to enable us to eat meat?!

You might think that we were 'made to eat veggies', but we have evolved attributes that enable use to eat meat. You can't deny that. We create enzymes that aid digestion of meat, enzymes we wouldn't need otherwise. \

Whether you think we should or not is completely up to you, but I think it's a bit daft to say we haven't evolved to enable us to do so safely and efficiently.

CordeliaFoxx · 02/08/2015 00:26

Kat Von D is everywhere! Just surprised you hadn't heard of her, especially as you share the same views, she is very outspoken about her beliefs, Google her.

screenjunkie · 02/08/2015 00:28

You remind me of that Friends episode Grays where Ross is so outraged that Phoebe does not believe in evolution.

I'm always open to learning and understanding new things but I've never been outraged or demanded that someone "can't deny" something.

I used to love Kat Von D. Now I think she's an arse.

CordeliaFoxx · 02/08/2015 00:30

Same here Grays, way too far up her own arse.

screenjunkie · 02/08/2015 00:31

I know plenty of people that share the same view as me (and plenty that wouldn't), just because she is a celebrity it doesn't make any difference to me.

Fair enough maybe if he ate the lion. I don't see any mumsnetters with trophy chicken heads at home.

And even if his objective was the taste of a real lion bar, he could have killed it humanely.

Well seeing as the average human eats 7,000 animals in their lifetime that would be an awful lot of trophy chicken heads.

If you believe that a slaughter house is humane and the animals feel no pain then ok. I wouldn't recommend watching any Youtube videos though as it's pretty distressing to see how much pain and suffering is actually caused.

Some questions are just that little bit too difficult, aren't they, screenjunkie?

I would suggest that, in future, if you're going to begin a discussion by calling people "hypocrites" you should make an effort to be rather more prepared with your arguments.

You just look a bit silly otherwise.

AvaCrowder · 02/08/2015 00:51

I think I might be a hypocrite. I'm ok with animals being farmed for slaughter. I don't like the dairy industry, but like it's produce too much to give it up. I really don't like that we take honey from bees, but if anybody gives me a jar of honey I take and use it. And I don't like that people would kill a lion for fun.
I'm a hypocrite, what are you going to do, eh?

cheshirecat23 · 02/08/2015 00:52

As a meat eater I find it a very, very difficult subject to comment on.

Lions are magnificent. The thought of one being stalked and killed purely for fun appals me, but....cows are beautiful, pigs are intelligent. It simply isn't necessary, today, to eat meat to survive. I choose to, because I'm selfish inasmuch as I'd rather eat chicken or ham, etc. than survive on the alternative.

I once watched a documentary about animal slaughter. The cow was led in, stunned and flipped on its back before being hauled up by a chain and its throat cut. I was devastated. I became vegetarian - for 4 months. Then the memory faded and I started to eat meat again.

I do think that an omnivore taking a tour of an abattoir or being asked to kill and gut their own chicken may find their tastes in food somewhat challenged.

Still....to actually set out to shoot and kill an animal in the wild, for sport, (particularly one whose demise could cause absolute catastrophy to its immediate family structure) is abhorrent.

screenjunkie · 02/08/2015 00:52

Sorry LemonCream didn't realise that your questions were so important and I had to answer all of them - and I will admit that I didn't bother to read most of you said before.

What question would you like me to answer so you can stop being in such a strop?

I will however also make the point that it's crazy how offended people get over the opinion of a complete stranger. Because I dare to think it's hypocritical suddenly makes my view so important? I think not.

Many people agree it's not hypocritical, so whats the issue because I do think it is?

HoneyDragon · 02/08/2015 00:54

Oh yay, animals ethics jerk off in the guise of a lecture, round eleventy million and three.

People got outraged in a viral way over all sorts on social media. It happens. If the passion people feel over this then gets further support and cash for any kind of animal rights than that's great isn't it? Even if the newbie did it a cheese burger last Tuesday?

Or maybe it was fuck all to do with lion. Maybe it was to do with the dentist.?

Perhaps the outrage would have be equal if if he'd nailed a chicken to a wall? We'll never know.

HoneyDragon · 02/08/2015 00:54
