On holiday with DP. Gorgeous place, Slovenia Alps.

He is driving me insane with 'wasp phobia'. Flapping, jumping up, moving away... Argh. He's 6"3 with a serious job. GET A GRIP!!!

WIBU to force him into a box of them to face this fear and realise sitting still tends to make them go away or am I just a big mean cow?

I do the jungle dance as well to the point of nearly being hit by a car as one of the little bastards chased me through a carpark. I've let go of prams and all sorts

Locking me in a room full of them would possibly kill me off

It's just so bloody annoying. Sit down and drink your sodding beer, boy! All it does is aggravate them.

You can tell it's our first holiday together. I took about 43 back packing gap yahs and he is more of a hotel type.

I tried sitting still once and still got stung. At 6 foot 3 your poor DH just makes more of a target.

I spend every August chucking drinks and ice lollies around, and once - sob! - a gorgeous crab sandwich on a beach because wasps have come near. If someone locked me in a room if them I would just faint clean away. It's one thing knowing that sitting still means they will leave you alone, and quite another managing to do it. But I have added Slovenia Alps to my list of places to avoid in summer, so thanks for that . Your poor DH .

If you're keen on desensitisation, how about every time he flaps and shrieks you stab him with a pin? He'll then realise that every time he's an annoying idiot he gets stabbed, but only some of the times when he sits still will he get stung.

My sympathy's with your dh! I got stung hy a wasp in Italy - bloody hell it hurt. For the best part of a week. And there was a big swollen lump.

Oh my DH does this. Flapping, jumping, wafting it towards me and the kids and in the process giving the children his semi-phobia.

If he has a real phobia, with full-blown panic attacks and everything, then YABVVU. Most people have no idea of how distressing they can be.

However, if he just prances about a bit in an attempt to get stung avoid the wasps, I think the exposure therapy you suggest would help. Or else hospitalise him so you can get some peace.

He has redeeming qualities and is suitably contrite but will not GET A SODDING GRIP.

So glad I am not the only one to have let go of the buggy. Lots of times. And near roads. Never lived it down since.

Too scared to go back to Marrakech - the little buggers (not locals ) just love the breakfast sweet stuff, and within seconds call all their mates. Thousands of them.

Having phobias also makes you prone to exaggerate.

YANBU - flappy people get stung more because of the flapping - just sit still!

As children my parents took us to Florida and on a canoe in an an alligator filled river near the everglades (why I will never know ...) my sister stood up and did a crazy flapping dance in the canoe when a wasp flew near her head, very, very nearly tipping us all in to be alligator food ...

Somehow she still as an adult thinks this was perfectly normal behaviour. ..

Stop flapping and 99% of the time they'll go away. Unless he has a severe reaction (in which case flapping is still stupid as he'smore likely to get stung) it's just irritating and juvenile behaviour.

Put beer mats over your glasses though so they aren't trying to get in your glasses.

Yabu for saying 'a serious job' as to inform us his day job isn't a clown or a comedian. Is he a funeral director or an accountant

Oooh YABU, sorry, I sympathise with your poor DP. I've jumped out of a moving car (going about 5mph or less as DP had seen the wasp in my hair and was pulling in so he could tell me, I heard it first!) I've let go of DS pram - on a hill- where DM had to chase the pram!! And many many others.
My days are spoiled by my fear of the little buggers when I'm outside as I'm constantly on edge and I'm sure my antics ruin other people's days. I've been quite lucky this year (hex on it now!) as I haven't seen many !! I think I may have a phobia rather than a fear, don't really know the difference though. I won't speak to any "professional" about it in case they try to put me in a room with them and I'm quite sure I would pass out!! The wierd thing is I've never been stung (I now give it two weeks after saying that) but I'm quite sure I would get anaphylactic shock

Here's a tip. If you get stung get a credit card (gym membership card does nicely) and place it flat on your arm/leg whatever ABOVE the sting. Swipe it down and up quickly to flick out the sting bit. It then hurts a lot lot less and heals much faster.

Now tell him to chill the feck out before he does get pushed down a mountain...

People who are phobic to the extent of putting your kid's lives in danger wouldn't it be pretty much your top priority to seek help to cure the phobia so you don't feel compelled to let prams roll down hills or into roads and jump out of moving buildings ?

It's really important you have compatible holiday styles....he needs training.

I've just come back from holiday and discovered that my DP's brother's girlfriend does this. We would be sitting outside a cafe and she will jump up shrieking and flapping. It's annoying, stupid and slightly dangerous (we had a fair few tables nearly go over) but also increase the chances that I will get stung!

Exactly !!! He's increasing chances of both getting stung.

Well I've never jumped out of a moving building

August to October is a total nightmare I even organise the summer holidays days out so most of August is indoors somewhere and all the outdoors ones from finishing school to a week into August.

There's nothing rational about phobias.

Has he ever been stung?

I find people who haven't tend (NOT ALWAYS :D just tend!) to be more afraid of wasp stings than those of us who've been attacked by the little fuckers and felt the fiery dagger. (allergies excepted)
