To lock DP in a room of wasps

Lighthearted.

On holiday with DP. Gorgeous place, Slovenia Alps.

He is driving me insane with 'wasp phobia'. Flapping, jumping up, moving away... Argh. He's 6"3 with a serious job. GET A GRIP!!!

WIBU to force him into a box of them to face this fear and realise sitting still tends to make them go away or am I just a big mean cow?

pepperpot I use jungle formula roll on stuff. I went through two on a fortnight holiday once but I wasn't, bitten or stung by mini beasts! Mind, i was wearing so much, I think one landed on me, tried to bite me and either died or committed suicide.

My mum is bonkers but is also a wasp flapper. My dad, whenever we were on holiday anywhere, the first thing he would do is buy a jar of jam, scoop half out and then leave it outside a few feet away from where we were eating, the wasps seemed to prefer the jam, would enter, and die in a sticky raspberry prison. End of holiday, pop the jam jar lid on and throw away.

I'm a clinical psych - believe me there are no MH/anxiety issues just him being a flappy melodramatic git.

However, said melodramatic git has sensed irritation, bought us a gorgeous lunch where he sat still despite obvious fear in face of wasps, then disappeared to buy me a gorgeous dress we saw earlier to apologise for bring a PITA. All forgiven (until tomorrow) ;-)

I was stung badley near my fanny and was a flapper, so was DS1. When I had DS2 we both stopped flapping as we didnt want to influence DS2...He is even wirse than we ever were

DS1 says "see Mum, its in built"

Anway, Slovenia..how nice is it, I've always wanted to go. Not into sitting on a beach holiday at all..

TheSnufflet · 31/07/2015 17:44

Aaaargh I see what you mean, but deep down I feel YABU... wasps are complete bastards - they don't care who you are, or what you've done; they just want to get you Shock The 'stay still, they're more scared of you than you are of them' thing is bollocks, and led to me getting stung 30 times all over as a seven year old. That shit stays with you.

Mind you, I'm not a flapper, more of a get-the-fuck-out-of-a-room-as-quickly-and-quietly-as-possible Grin

OhMrGove · 31/07/2015 17:50

Lake Bled, dat trip to Ljubljana today. Stunning, just perfect. Demonstrably fewer wasps in the capital too!

My dp does this, he looks bloody ridiculous and it drives me mad just SIT STILL.
We were sat In the garden last summer with his brother and a wasp flew past and his brother jumped up started ducking and flapping hands, dp was pissing himself laughing at him couldn't believe it! Do you not realise you look just as fucking stupid dp?!!

SmillasSenseOfSnow · 31/07/2015 18:15

I'm another person who just has to drop everything and get the fuck away and never return. Thank fuck I don't have children.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 31/07/2015 18:21

I've been stung by the little fuckery fuckers about 15 times. I'm allergic to them too so it's grim. Not once have I been flapping.
I do try not to flap but I will scoot if I can. One got on ds's head the other day and I managed to not faint for the 3 seconds it took to go away.

ArmyDad · 31/07/2015 18:32

YABU, but fucking funny though

OhMrGove · 01/08/2015 11:47

HE'S EVEN WORSE TODAY.

Going to drown him in the lake

paintedfences · 01/08/2015 13:50

I am PETRIFIED of the things. I can't help it! You are mean! (I am possibly also a weed, but am also 31 and never been stung by bee or wasp, not ONCE.) Grin

paintedfences · 01/08/2015 13:52

If you stay still they might LAND on you. Do you not see?? Their little scratchy legs. On your naked skin. Bodies full of insect rage and burning poison. And you sitting there, powerless, terrified to breathe. ARrgrrrrrggh

FLAPS, DANCES, FLAPS

Italiangreyhound · 01/08/2015 13:57

YABU, a phobia is a phobia. Take it seriously and help your man!

Try a spray to repel wasps!

You protect him from the wasps, it's only fair!

Valsoldknickers · 01/08/2015 14:03

YABU!

Mainland European wasps are mahoosive mutant loud buggers, much bigger and nastier than our little feckers.

They scare the bejaysus out of me too. If you have a tendency to be a little startled by our smaller ones then Central/Eastern European ones will turn you into a fully fledged panicking flapper!

I can hear that horrible loud buzzing.....

OhMrGove · 01/08/2015 16:14

This started as a joke but I'm seriously considering leaving him after this. We had to move inside for lunch and he was a flappy nightmare when we had a drink in the sun. I'm sorry but he's not allergic, he has no issues with anxiety / SN, he's just a pathetic whiny git.

We fly home tomorrow. I fly off with friends 4 hours later. I bet they'll have their shit together.

Sorry. Bored of catering to silliness in a grown man.

Buy him a beekeeper's suit to wear when he is out and about! You can get him a smoker as well for extra protection.

howabout · 01/08/2015 16:22

LTB would be thoroughly unreasonable!
Next year come to Scotland on holiday. It is far too cold and wet to contemplate eating outside - not even sure the wasp population will have survived (I can't speak for the midgies).

OhMrGove · 01/08/2015 16:24

Bee keeper suit - available on Amazon ?

Nah, he'll be submerged by tomorrow

OP posts:
TendonQueen · 01/08/2015 16:28

Wear headphones at all times. And full on sunglasses. Pretend you can neither hear nor see him.

Not sure why his 'serious' job is even relevant. Would it be ok for him to react dramatically if he was a road sweeper because your expectations would be lower?

OhMrGove · 01/08/2015 16:35

If he was, say, still a student or just starting out I might give him more leeway. Not sure why you think sweeping the roads isn't serious; it seems to be to me. My point was he has a career he has to get up for most weeks every year that requires thought and competence, two things he clearly is lacking out here.

OP posts:
MameHootieBench · 01/08/2015 17:32

Oh dear, OP, does he know you're really pissed off with him?

ealingwestmum · 01/08/2015 17:33

And....there it goes. The lightheartedness. Gone...as quick as a wasp zapped to death Shock

NurNochKurzDieWeltRetten · 01/08/2015 17:36

No they aren't Valso ... live in mainland Europe and the wasps are just wasps.

I'm with you OhMr - flappers make me cross and spoil sunny days. My kids were all sensible about insects til a staywith MIL who shrieks and flaps at people if a wasp comes near them, thus making the person (child) she's flapping at think thereis a reason to be scared where ppreviously they were unworried - she also obsessively wipes at the children during meals outdoors, all the time lecturing on the risk of attracting wasps.

Took me ages to train the children back out of the silly behaviour she introduced, and DD is still prone to it.

*Disclaimer aside from her reaction to insects and snakes (she killed a slow worm in her garden with a rock in front of the kids) I get on well with my MIL :o

Phobias are different but thereis still something people with phobias can do - seek help. And most flappers don't really have a phobia andcould make a cchoicenot to be hysterical, which does have a big nnegative effect on those around them (whether it's just being irritating or teaching children that that'sthe normal reaction, or knocking things over or getting other people stung by aaggregating the wasps).

Will you be making it look like an accident or pleading self defense/ crime of passion?

sebsmummy1 · 01/08/2015 17:51

I tend to shriek and run too. Funnily enough I have seen no wasps this year at all, where are they all??

Never been stung and did used to try the sitting still technique but they would persist. So running became the favoured course of action.

OP get the poor sod back to the UK and see if you can tolerate him again in his home environment. I think it would be unkind to dump him because of this, it's not like he flaps every time he sees a cat or something.
