To think Dentists are the new Lawyers/Estate Agents

ie social pariahs.

I am trying to find a good dentist. Well, any dentist. We moved regions and I left behind my lovely dentist where my kids went free and I paid (as a private patients) really quite reasonable rates.

I am now trying to register in the new area and the rates are extortionate.

£29 for a kid's check up.
£110 for me. For a check up.

I found another dentist where it was £20 for a kid's check up but they wanted to sell me their plan which costs £5 a month. ie £60 a year. But my kids' teeth are fine - they don't have fillings and the previous dentist was delighted with their teeth. So why should I pay £60 a year when 2 check ups will cost £40 a year?

THIS is why sodding American dentists can afford to spend $35,000 killing a lion.

I have found a reasonably priced dentist about 20 miles from where we live, but there is a registration waiting list of 5 months. I'm not suprised - it's the only dentist in the area which still has NHS places for kids and the check ups are only £18 for an adult.

THIS IS WHY THE NATION'S TEETH ARE FALLING APART. Dentists are pricing normal people out of going to the dentist. Yes, I know they have to buy the equipment and keep the place hygienic. But £110 for a check up is ridiculous.

Oh absolutely, I agree standards have to be high but obviously hoping the available kites of dentists in the future isn't lacking

Do you know, my dishwasher has broken and it's less than two years old and I can't get a man out to fix it until 8 August. I mean, really. You can't get the staff these days.

Hic.

Not surprised that this killer is a dentist.
At least he's gone into hiding, a few less patients getting ripped off.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 31/07/2015 21:32

If found this thread really interesting.

Whilst I don't agree with the ops stance on the matter I understand her frustration. Her irritation is just directed towards the wrong place.

I work in a field where I get paid quite a bit I think that's fair and based on education and skill, the gov routinely expect me to do exactly the same work for a tiny fraction of the fee (very basic way of explaining it) I have the choice of being paid several hundred pounds an hour or £8.

I'm not going to knock anybody for saying no to the £8ph option and I think the fault is with the person whose not willing to appropriatly fund the service.

Children's dentisty should be free at point of delivery because that is the health service we are meant to have but if the nhs is not willing to pay the
Practicioner then that is the fault of the nhs

lavendersun · 31/07/2015 21:32

redbinneo, not all humans are nice - what is your point?

redbinneo · 31/07/2015 21:43

Lavvy: This thread is about dentists, not humanity, get a grip.

BitOfFun · 31/07/2015 21:54

Has anybody else just read this thread and then nervously brushed their teeth? Grin

redbinneo · 31/07/2015 21:57

BoF, I'm just filling time before I floss, you know the drill.

dougieroseagain · 31/07/2015 22:05

Did anyone say drill?

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

That'll be a hundred and eight quid, please.

Plus VAT dougie.

dougieroseagain · 31/07/2015 22:22

Are children's check ups exempt from VAT the same way that children's clothes, shoes and books are?

OP posts:
Gobbolinothewitchscat · 31/07/2015 22:33

why am I on this thread again

Dental services (like most medical services) including the provision of dental prosthesis/appliances/drugs etc are VAT exempt

The only thing patients will pay VAT on is the supply of goods such as toothbrushes and toothpaste.

This is the case whether the treatment is NHS or private.

Tell you what dougie, instead of being a goadie cunt, how about you floss, brush your teeth for two minutes and go to bed, that way, you won't need to work about having to spend so much at the dentist. After all, dental disease is preventable if you don't shovel sugar into your mouth all day and observe some basic hygiene measures. If you need some tips, there are loads on the Internet.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 31/07/2015 22:50

Always at your service, dougie dear one.

I just couldn't bear a further 15 pages of complaints about dentists who have allegedly charged VAT at 193%. And we know that is the truth because it was in the 10 year old P&L statement!

Mrsmorton · 31/07/2015 22:51

GOBBO!!!!!!

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 31/07/2015 22:54

I'm off to bed now - post brushing for 2 minutes - because mrsmorton speaks the truth that doesn't apply to the general population as 97% of them have self-diagnosed "weak enamel". More tru fax!

Collaborate · 31/07/2015 23:04

I'm going to start a just giving fund for NHS dentists. Because I've had my eyes opened now and apparently they're all making a loss on it and must be queueing at the soup kitchens unless they've got oodles of private work. Oh, and the surveys I've seen are a tissue of lies too. Apparently they're not earning an average of £65k a year, on which they pay tax.

Who knew?!!!
