to wonder what my new neighbours are doing?

New upstairs neighbours moved in a few weeks ago and things have gotten weirder and weirder. At first it was the two men (id say both middle aged) came down at least 4 times a day and did something at the gas meter (my patio doors lead to the communal gardens and from my living room I can see the gas meters for all the flats) which I thought odd but figured they were getting readings as they just moved in.. But a few weeks later and they still do it many times a day.. No one needs to top up the gas meter that often surely?

My friend said maybe they are dealing drugs or stashing something in the meter box? I could check but that seems like a right over reaction! Anyway there is serious banging coming from the flat. It starts at random points (sometimes daytime, but as late as 1am) and lasts for a good few hours. I mean REAL rhythmic thudding.. DIY at 1am? Slow sex several times a day?

Then the other night I was going to sleep and heard a chilling scream and wailing that lasted for hours. It sounded like a child at first but then I wondered if it was a sexual type noise as it took on more of that tone but then back to a more pained screaming.. I couldn't work it out?

I'm not usually this nosey but I hear all these noises over the washing machine/tv etc and when someone goes to the meters it catches your eye from the living room. The previous occupiers were a family with a young child and I never heard a peep from them so its not just a thin floor/ceiling.

Sorry my aibu would be I suppose, shall I go and ask them to be quieter? I don't know how much English they speak but I am sure I could get my point across somehow.. Anyone have any ideas what they are doing with the thudding and gas box?

Are they testing how much gas it takes to say, cook a pie, have a bath, so they do the over a budget?

As for the noises, my kettle bell routine sounds odd, my DD recorded it one day from upstairs.

Surely they don't do kettle bell at 1am.

I am going for nailing each others bits to things. (Banging and screaming)

No idea about the gas meter.

HowD · 28/07/2015 19:16

Yes check the meter. Please expand on the screaming, it sounds concerning.

BitchBags · 28/07/2015 19:18

Yanbu that does sound very odd! Maybe they are doing drugs and hallucinating (could explain banging and screaming?) And hiding them in the gas meter?

Wishful80sMontage · 28/07/2015 19:19

The screaming sounds very scary :(

ADishBestEatenCold · 28/07/2015 19:19

Ah, but would you be satisfied if they were simply quieter Wink or do you really want to what their doing with the gas meter!

minkGrundy · 28/07/2015 19:21

The gas meter, is this a meter in a box you can read or a meter you put money into?

Milkwagon · 28/07/2015 19:22

Sounds like they're making a cannabis factory.

emotionsecho · 28/07/2015 19:24

Hmm very odd all round. With regard to the gas meters any possibility they could be trying to fiddle with somehow to alter the readings?

The screaming, from a horror movie possibly? Although if I'd hear something that disturbing I think I'd have phoned the boys in blue!

Are they renting? Could you mention to the landlord about the rythmic thumping?

HirplesWithHaggis · 28/07/2015 20:12

Running a cannabis factory wouldn't involve thumping or screaming, though. The lights run on electricity, not gas, and ventilation fans would whirr rather than thump.

It's a conundrum.

cashewnutty · 28/07/2015 20:16

Maybe making some other drugs? Meth maybe? Something that needs cooked. Thumoing could be some ingredient that needs broken down from solid form into powder?

Isntitironic · 28/07/2015 20:29

No idea... I don't know if I'm glad that my neighbours are quiet or disappointed that they're boring!

Tryharder · 28/07/2015 20:37

YWBU to listen to prolonged screaming and not call the police!

BabyDerek · 28/07/2015 20:40

I would have to go and look at the meter. Could they be fiddling it - ie attaching something to someone else's so they don't pay for their gas/electricity?
No ideas on the screaming but if it continued i would have to put in an anonymous call to 101.

VerticalCheese · 28/07/2015 20:55

I did think about the police with the screams but whenever I went to get my phone it seemed like it was more moans than screams. I've recently had to call the police to come twice for different things and was stupidly a bit worried they would think I was a time-waster (although now i type that it sounds ridiculous and I'm cross with myself)

The meter is a read type meter but I think they can pay onto it too. Mine isn't a pay with a card one but I know some of my other neighbours ones are. I am going to look in the meter box tomorrow now, I'm too curious! Not sure if I'm more worried I will find something or not find something really.. Earlier one of the men came down again to the meter but this time with a woman I've never seen before who walked behind him, stood and waited for him to do 'Something' at it and then walked behind him back inside with no exchanged words. For some reason it felt unsettling but then my imagination does run away sometimes..

Human trafficking? I watched taken" recently

Lj8893 · 28/07/2015 21:05

I would have to go and look in the meter. And if you hear the screaming again, phone the police. If it is just sex noises, at least they will be so embarrassed by the police arrival that they should keep it down!

Ohbollocksandballs · 28/07/2015 21:07

Sounds very odd. With the meter box maybe they are having problems with the gas turning off?

Methe · 28/07/2015 21:10

You heard a chilling wailing noise that sounded childlike for hours and didn't call the police?

YABU.

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 28/07/2015 21:17

It could be being used as a brothel? must watch less tv

Lurkedforever1 · 28/07/2015 21:27

Maybe they have an irate mummy who kicked off at them for using a p&c place up there, torturing her with 24/7 barney reruns and electronic singing purple dinosaurs. If they're running some type of drugs racket they aren't exactly good at it, acting so suspiciously. If you'd rigged your meter and/ or have an amphetamine lab/ cannabis farm you'd hardly draw attention to yourself that much.
The screaming sounds weird though, that I would ring 101 about. Although if I heard a childs prolonged screaming I'd be banging the door down and ringing 999.

VerticalCheese · 28/07/2015 22:36

The thing was I thought it sounded childlike but then I muted the tv and listened and itsounded like a young woman and with the pounding I thought sex.. It wasn't directly above me at that point so it was more muffled.

The banging and crashing started again about 20 minutes ago and still going.. Sounds like someone doing long jump currently.. Lots of extremely heavy footed stomp sounds followed by one big bang. Over and over and over, its giving me a headache! Thank god dd is a heavy sleeper

Phone the council noise department and get it logged. Seriously weird.
