to wonder what my new neighbours are doing?

New upstairs neighbours moved in a few weeks ago and things have gotten weirder and weirder. At first it was the two men (id say both middle aged) came down at least 4 times a day and did something at the gas meter (my patio doors lead to the communal gardens and from my living room I can see the gas meters for all the flats) which I thought odd but figured they were getting readings as they just moved in.. But a few weeks later and they still do it many times a day.. No one needs to top up the gas meter that often surely?

My friend said maybe they are dealing drugs or stashing something in the meter box? I could check but that seems like a right over reaction! Anyway there is serious banging coming from the flat. It starts at random points (sometimes daytime, but as late as 1am) and lasts for a good few hours. I mean REAL rhythmic thudding.. DIY at 1am? Slow sex several times a day?

Then the other night I was going to sleep and heard a chilling scream and wailing that lasted for hours. It sounded like a child at first but then I wondered if it was a sexual type noise as it took on more of that tone but then back to a more pained screaming.. I couldn't work it out?

I'm not usually this nosey but I hear all these noises over the washing machine/tv etc and when someone goes to the meters it catches your eye from the living room. The previous occupiers were a family with a young child and I never heard a peep from them so its not just a thin floor/ceiling.

I'll bet you there aren't supposed to be that many people crammed in there either. The flat will have been allocated to the couple or lady with kids and her family will have moved on the fly with her. Definitely call the flats owners. This happens a lot nowadays as people try and save money and are stuck on housing lists.

sebsmummy1 · 31/07/2015 06:29

Yep I suspect that's what happening too. The flat is being prepared for over occupation and they are probably keeping a track on the gas and leccy meters to divi up the bills.

FayKorgasm · 31/07/2015 06:54

Yes absolutely call SS and housing.

I wonder are they making whiskey, that takes a lot of gas and thumps watches too much Moonshiners.

Methe · 31/07/2015 07:50

I'm wondering if the rhythmic bump is an occilating fan? They kind of click at each end.

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 31/07/2015 08:41

Over occupation is serious. It puts strain on electrics and is a fire risk. Also horrible for the poor kids. Imagine being shown your own room then several adults piling in to share. Report it today OP. Save any heartache later and spare the kids from living in such awful conditions.

Lurkedforever1 · 31/07/2015 09:21

Ring nspcc for advice, they can and will go above confidentiality and report anything they deem serious, and at the least will give you an honest and unbiased view of what could/ would happen if you report.
I'd also contact landlord/ha

yorkshapudding · 31/07/2015 11:01

I would ring SS and tell them that there are two men, two women and two children living above you in a 2 bed flat and that you have heard screaming during the night. This will be enough to arouse suspicions. Also, if you hear screaming again call the police while it's happening. Even if it is sex noises, why are they having sex that loudly when they are in a confined space with two kids!

MokunMokun · 31/07/2015 11:10

Do you think the kid is playing football in the flat?

Talismania · 31/07/2015 11:15

The screaming - is it definitely coming from the flat or could it've been from outside? Or do the people have cats? B/c the sound you describe sounds just exactly like the sound of mating cats. It may have been cats mating outside or they may be breeding cats in the flat.

VerticalCheese · 31/07/2015 13:32

Its not cats, no pets in the flats and we are next to a main road so never see cats around here. I've heard cats mating before but I don't think this was that. I called housing and he said basically go up and politely ask them to keep it down. I said I would but honestly I'm a little scared.. I'm just not that kind of person in too scared of strangers.. I will try to build up the courage because I know I'm being stupid but still. Will call NSPCC later on.

I had issues with a neighbour in my previous flat - similar to you in that there were strange/concerning noises/comings and goings at night. I called 111 to speak to the local police about my concerns and they took it seriously. You should not feel uncomfortable/unsafe in your own home.

I would ignore what housing said and definitely do not approach the neighbours. You should not have to do that, especially as you already feel a bit scared of them

Tinandgonic · 31/07/2015 17:30

Are they growing cannabis? That would explain them being at the meter...perhaps they're rigging it

WaggleBee · 31/07/2015 17:45

I've read about the slow thudding somewhere before. Did you post it on here in another thread or was it on another site?

VerticalCheese · 31/07/2015 18:08

Not posted about this before wagglebee, here or elsewhere

Okay. I was just being nosy really. Wine

Definitely read the thudding on twitter though. Maybe another neighbour can hear them? Would that be an option? Do you have friendly neighbours who could help?
