to wonder what my new neighbours are doing?

New upstairs neighbours moved in a few weeks ago and things have gotten weirder and weirder. At first it was the two men (id say both middle aged) came down at least 4 times a day and did something at the gas meter (my patio doors lead to the communal gardens and from my living room I can see the gas meters for all the flats) which I thought odd but figured they were getting readings as they just moved in.. But a few weeks later and they still do it many times a day.. No one needs to top up the gas meter that often surely?

My friend said maybe they are dealing drugs or stashing something in the meter box? I could check but that seems like a right over reaction! Anyway there is serious banging coming from the flat. It starts at random points (sometimes daytime, but as late as 1am) and lasts for a good few hours. I mean REAL rhythmic thudding.. DIY at 1am? Slow sex several times a day?

Then the other night I was going to sleep and heard a chilling scream and wailing that lasted for hours. It sounded like a child at first but then I wondered if it was a sexual type noise as it took on more of that tone but then back to a more pained screaming.. I couldn't work it out?

I'm not usually this nosey but I hear all these noises over the washing machine/tv etc and when someone goes to the meters it catches your eye from the living room. The previous occupiers were a family with a young child and I never heard a peep from them so its not just a thin floor/ceiling.

Maybe they're gassing people for money, and they want to know how much to charge per murder?

Gruntfuttock · 28/07/2015 22:54

I wouldn't be able to stand that going on. I feel so sorry for you. I think I'd go up there and ask what the hell was going on.

VerticalCheese · 28/07/2015 23:06

I'm a bit scared to go up there now, I've had more than one aggressive neighbour in this block and in the last few weeks alone have had to call police for a 'horrific assault' (police officers words) by a man on a woman and also a physical fight in the courtyard between two tenants. I've been trying to get a swap for 3 years I hate the thought of dd growing up here but what can you do? Its a nice flat and a roof over our heads.

Noises are still going on as well as talking in raised voices but doesn't sound very aggressive or distressed, just loud. Sounds like possibly Hindi? Not that that is relevant really just saying its loud enough to hear each word but I don't speak the language so unsure what they're saying.

Sure they are not installing a gas appliancee? And checking meter for leaks.
Although diy installing a gas appliance woukd be illegal and why does it take two of them to read the meter??

DoTheDuckFace · 28/07/2015 23:19

My sons X box makes quite a noise, we can hear it from downstairs and uses up quite a lot of electricity. Is it just a gas meter in the cupboard?

VerticalCheese · 28/07/2015 23:45

Gas only, the electric meters are in the hallways.

Are they fitting carpets (if you don't have a stretch tool you have to "jump" it into the edges)? Could explain the the banging.

Could also be fitting laminate and putting together flat pack furniture.

No idea about the screaming though, unless it's music on really quiet and the sound's getting distorted.

minkGrundy · 29/07/2015 00:41

I think they think a gas appliance that might be leaking.

If you look in meter and there is nothing there, you might want to call the gas co .

Concordial · 29/07/2015 00:46

Are they Morris dancing with the rhythmic bumps and stomps? The prolonged screaming is someone being forced to watch it.
No idea about the gas meter though.

No seriously, contact the council re. the noise if it continues. You could also give the gas people a call and explain you are a bit concerned as you've noticed your new neighbours are constantly checking the meters and you are worried there is a problem or they are tampering with it.
As for the screaming or moaning, give the police a call and voice your concerns.
Hope it resolves soon.

crustsaway · 29/07/2015 00:55

I live downstairs in a house that's probably not meant to be subdivided and can hear everything. Two blokes stomping around at night can sound like elephants. I think they are just really noisy buggers and probably at it a lot. Could you not go and have a word in the morning telling them you can actually hear everything. They may be very embarrassed and ease off a bit Grin

crustsaway · 29/07/2015 01:00

As for the meter cupboard thing, they could have some sort of method going to tamper with it, seems a bit like too much hardwork to save a few quid though, so I'd leave them to it. You're going to sound a bit strange telling anyone that you don't like the fact they look at a lot.

This really made me laugh. :)

What sort of drugs manufacturing would that be though? I dont get that at all. You dont need to tamper with a gas metre to mix drugs and if it was cannabis then they'd have to have a pretty big place to do this and an irrigation system going Grin

RosePetels · 29/07/2015 01:15

How annoying, you should mention that you have noticed noise so if they are doing anything dodgy then they won't want the attention and hopefully be quiet

GetOffMyEmail · 29/07/2015 01:39

How strange! I would definitely be checking the gas meter!

bloodyteenagers · 29/07/2015 01:50

Meth needs gas.
Crack can be cooked on a stove.

Next lot of screaming phone the police.

It could all be innocent. But with all the banging, screaming and gas checking. Sooner or later you could have emergency services there.

coolaschmoola · 29/07/2015 01:56

Slow rhythmic thuds and prolonged moany wailing?

Tantric sex?

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 29/07/2015 21:34

What happened OP? Brothel? Drug ring?

cozietoesie · 29/07/2015 22:58

If it wasn't for the gas meter behaviour (and I have no idea what that was) I'd be thinking dog 'training'. Are you in the UK, OP ?

ElkeDagMeisje · 29/07/2015 23:06

Could they be ballroom dancers or similar, with an enthusiastic female partner?

And simply checking the gas meter for meter readings since they are new tenants, and to gauge how much they are using in a new home, so as to budget?

VerticalCheese · 31/07/2015 00:34

Hello all. I did have a look at their meter, nothing strange there. There are at least two men, two women, a child and a baby (2 bedroom flat) they are currently DRILLING yes you read that correctly, and the baby is crying (has been for some hours) the older child is shouting and racing around. All was quiet during the day but in the evening its all gone crazy. The stomping has resumed. I spoke to another neighbour earlier who said they were outside earlier allowing the older child to kick the football purposely at my other neighbour and her child and when neighbour asked them to ask to child to stop, they seemed completely not bothered and didn't, so not sure I would get anywhere having a word (surely anyone with common sense doesn't drill at midnight!)

She also said the women shout a lot during the day and the baby and child seem to cry a lot and for ling periods which is worrying. I am going to phone housing manager tomorrow, would it be worth phoning the nspcc for advice also, or ss? Something just doesn't seem right here at all Sad

minkGrundy · 31/07/2015 00:39

I would have held onto the football if I were the neighbour.

Hhm wonder what it is with gas meter. Did you weite down the reading

minkGrundy · 31/07/2015 00:39

Weite=write

Bogeyface · 31/07/2015 00:39

If its happening right now, call the police.
