people that bump park should have their licence taken away

Surely no one thinks bump parking is acceptable? Especially now parking is easy as new cars all have rear parking cameras with guides.

I see it all the time in London and I've never witnessed it happening to my high end car, but I'm sure the small bumps are caused by it.

I haven't read all of this thread. It is very common to bump park in Spain, in fact it is par for the course. I have never come across this in the UK though yet ...

ADishBestEatenCold · 26/07/2015 18:50

"You can bump anyone as long as you don't cause damage DurhamDurham."

What if your vehicle's bumpers are a different height to those of the vehicle you 'bump'?

PeppaWellington · 26/07/2015 18:50

I had never in my life heard of bump parking until this thread.

What a BRILLIANT idea!

I'm off out right now to drive my car around the block, then smash it forcefully into a tiny space left between two cars bought by two morons who can barely afford them.

Mwah.
Mwah.
Mwwwwaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Sparklingbrook · 26/07/2015 18:50

Don't try what lpo? You said I had a tiny mind. That's quite nasty and I don't understand why.

Christinayanglah · 26/07/2015 18:55

"DS1 has got some nice white paint marks on his silver bumper."

If it's surface damage he might be able to buff the white paint off with some clay or pad and a bit of T-Cut or similar. Have a look in Halfords in their car cleaning section and he should probably find something to fix it reasonably well.

Lweji · 26/07/2015 18:57

On one hand, I think MNHQ should delete it.
On the other hand, I think it says more about who said it than about who it was said about.

Everyone is perfectly entitled not to want to live in London.

TheHormonalHooker · 26/07/2015 18:58

Thanks Made DH has already tried T-Cut but it's not all off. Fortunately he's quite nifty with a bit of paint and we've got a car polisher, so it'll be ok. It's just annoying.

limitedperiodonly · 26/07/2015 19:09

Crotch End Sparkling?

You're not the only one whose said that though. It's a bit shitty isn't it, even if I don't live in Crouch End.

But if you do want to drive anywhere you are surely going to have to accept the possibility that your car will be damaged.

Because people in some parts of London are very rich they will have very nice cars. We park them on the streets unless we are very, very rich and have Bond-villain secret car parks.

Even those fabulously rich people sometimes have to park on the streets because they need to drive their cars around because what's the point of having a Bugatti Veyron if no one sees it?

Sometimes those cars get damaged or stolen. That is what is insurance is for.

I am content with that.

If you're not, don't drive.

MadeMan · 26/07/2015 19:11

Yeah it is annoying Hormonal, hope he gets it sorted out.

I had a silver car a few years back and I seemed to forever be rubbing black rubber marks and scuffs off the bumpers, probably caused by huge 4x4's front wheels turning against my car as they parked/drove off.

Sparklingbrook · 26/07/2015 19:13

'Crotch End' was a typo from Chris which I picked up on. Confused What is shitty? I have never even been to Crouch End that I know of.

howtodrainyourflagon · 26/07/2015 19:13

It's not needed in most situations but when you're trying to parallel park in a very tight spot I think it's fine to move back very very slowly and make contact with the bumper of the car behind.

I used to live on a tiny street with cars parallel parked both sides and could get my car into a space 30cm longer than the car itself. Sometimes bumpers met in this process. Not at speed and not often

LavenderLeigh · 26/07/2015 19:14

Crouch End?
There's really a place called that? And it's "naice"? How strange.
It sounds like some comedy, made-up place inhabited by Dickensian paupers, all bent over double from grindingly hard work and ripe for urban regeneration.

High end car sounds like one of those ones that's all jacked up suspension, with throbbing engines, driven by young men intent on proving their machismo.

Just use public transport and you won't have any of those worries about paying £200 for a scratch on a wheel cover and no parking issues either. And you could spend the commuting time writing letters to the council to rename the area so it's more suitable for aspirational people.

Sparklingbrook · 26/07/2015 19:14

Would you bump park a car that had someone sitting in it though? and expect them not to bother about it?

Christinayanglah · 26/07/2015 19:14

It was me that said Crotch End

ShelaghTurner · 26/07/2015 19:19

I was waiting in the car at the school and a van parking in front of me bumped my car several times. When I got out of the car to protest he called me several choice names and told me he'd hit my car as many times as he fucking well liked and what was I going to do about it. Is that bump parking? Because if it is it's a shitty thing to do regardless of age of car.

limitedperiodonly · 26/07/2015 19:41

Would you bump park a car that had someone sitting in it though? and expect them not to bother about it?

I'd expect someone in that situation to budge up if it was possible.

I would. Why wouldn't you?

But it's all relative.

I'm a woman and small.

I guess that if I were a large man or had a large male passenger the other driver might budge up

MollyAir · 26/07/2015 19:46

This is a strange and slightly abusive thread which is nonetheless teaching me a great deal about drivers. I had no idea bump parking was a thing. Although I was bumped by someone once and when I protested, he yelled - very aggressively - "That's what bumpers are for!" So I felt a twat. But it kind of upset me, sitting in my stationary car, being BUMPED. Angry

BolshierAyraStark · 26/07/2015 19:47

No this really isn't what bumpers are for Hmm
If you need to 'bump park' you're a shit driver, end of.

MollyAir · 26/07/2015 19:48

I wasn't even blocking the guy who yelled at me. He just started his car aggressively and bumped into the back of me.

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 26/07/2015 19:50

Shelagh - If he caused any damage, I hope you made a note of his number plate and called your insurance company. They will be able to follow it up and trace the driver of that van.

My car is 13 yrs old (it used to be 'high end', once upon a time, but it's very old now) Grin grin]. However - if someone knowingly and deliberately damaged the bumper, I would pursue via the insurance company, as the cost of the repair on this car would be very high end and more than I would be willing to pay. If it was a genuine little 'oopsy-daisy' bump, I'd probably let it go (as TBH, the car does have a few dinks on it already).
But a deliberate shunt would make me very cross!

MadeMan · 26/07/2015 19:58

Even if somebody gently bumps your bumper it can still cause 'spiderwebs' in the paintwork due to the bumpers being flexible plastic, rather than rigid metal.

Accidents do and will happen, but anyone bumping on purpose should retake some driving lessons.

MagratGarlik · 26/07/2015 20:02

One of our cars is 43 years old. It has metal bumpers. I think if anyone tried to "bump park" it, they may regret it due to the damage those metal bumpers would cause on their modern one Smile.

Kayden · 26/07/2015 20:03

Anyone who can't park without bumping - however gently (!) - against a bumper is a lousy driver.

MadeMan · 26/07/2015 20:06

Does your 43 year old car have one of those nice black and silver number plates, Magrat? Smile
