to take back my used Jo Malone candles as the quality has been declining for years

Anyone else noticed the decline in quality both of the fragrance and flam burn.

I bought the pomegranate noir and I'm really disappointed , was thankfully the small one for 40 quid but still want to return it but I have had it lit for an hour or so.

OP posts:

Slightly concerned about the people who think you can't return something as faulty if it's been used?!

You may need to get your logical thought processes looked at, something is clearly wrong!

Viviennemary · 25/07/2015 13:53

We all have our little extravagancies. But a candle just seems so 'fleeting'. But expecially annoying when it is substandard so the OP should certainly return it.

Queenbean · 25/07/2015 13:58

Of course take it back, if it doesn't work as its meant to then it's faulty

So funny the people who get worked up about what other people spend their money on. This always happens on the designer bag threads too. Bizarrely though, if someone wants to buy a car of have a child, no one ever points out how much money they cost

I have a reed defuser from Nest which is incredible, had to have it shipped from America but it smells unbelievably good

Queenbean · 25/07/2015 13:58

Defuser?! Diffuser!

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 25/07/2015 14:05

how could anybody?

What a daft question...you can say the same about pretty much anything ...food, perfume, books, clothes...all fleeting! So why buy bottles of decent perfume when you can use impulse body spray...why buy organic meat when you can buy economy...why buy books when you can get them out the library....why buy good quality clothes when you can buy Primark?

If that's what people choose to spend their money on then that's their perogative and judging them is sodding ridiculous.

Bitter and jealous ?

Get over yourself. Wouldn't buy a candle for a tenner let alone £40 . And if they have been declining "for years* why you still buying them OP ?

And what is with all this candle obsession anyway ? Middle class types going Victorian poor ? Pah.

NotYouNaanBread · 25/07/2015 14:18

As an ex retailer in this area, True Grace is outstanding - their Library and Sacristy scents are heavenly.

If you want to bump up a level from Jo Malone, try Astier de Villatte.

I love my Yankee candles and don't find them cheap or sickly at all. And only £2ish for a tart that last hours in my electric tart burner Smile wouldn't spend £40 on a candle unless it smelled absolutely divine and lasted an eternity!

Ilovecrapcrafts · 25/07/2015 15:43

To be fair, they have about 60 hours burn time. You shouldn't need the whole 60 hours to decide it's faulty.

CelibacyCakeAndFuckThePO · 25/07/2015 16:50

Nope, good old fashioned working class here.

But then, as a fan of Yankee candles my taste us somewhat questionable.

There was me thinking I was almost middle class, having an expensive smelly candle Grin Wink

actually, I get the wax melts as they only cost a couple of quid

Tuskerfull · 25/07/2015 17:18

But OP burned it for around an hour.

thenightsky · 25/07/2015 17:34

This thread is making me fancy some scented candles about the place. Think I'll try and Morrisons ones. I've never considered buying them as I've always worried I'd set off our very sensitive smoke alarms or something.

squoosh · 25/07/2015 17:36

I always buy my scented candles in TK Maxx, you get some great ones there between the £6-£10 mark.

contractor6 · 25/07/2015 17:39

Slightly off thread, but to make candles last longer pop in fridge for a bit before burning.

ATravellingCircusCame · 25/07/2015 17:46

'To be fair, they have about 60 hours burn time. You shouldn't need the whole 60 hours to decide it's faulty.'

Well, no. The OP has only burned it for ONE hour though. So well within the 'tried it and it's faulty' timeframe surely?

HeyDuggee · 25/07/2015 17:56

I use to buy tk maxx candles around Christmas time, and never got why people spent more than a tenner. Then one year I broke my foot and was stuck indoors for months. DH bought me a Diptique candle to cheer me up. And holy fuck, it actually did. Every time I lit that candle, I cheered up. The smell was just wonderful. Saying every candle is same is like saying every lotion is the same and the rest was marketing. The hell it is.

Now I just ask for the candles as gifts. Roses and tubereus are current favourites.

KissMyFatArse · 25/07/2015 17:56

Off topic but try imperial candles, slightly dearer than Yankee but smell great and have little jewels in them!

squoosh · 25/07/2015 17:57

Diptyque candles are amazing Hey!

limitedperiodonly · 25/07/2015 18:02

There aren't any TKMaxxs near me but a month ago I went to a difficult business meeting in Kingston-Upon-Thames and as a bonus there was one.

I promised myself a visit after I'd done the penance of the meeting. Unfortunately one of the annoying people I was meeting insisted on travelling back with me to the station to Victoria.

We passed TKMaxx and it was calling to me with all its discounted goodies - I particularly wanted to check out the scented candles - but I felt I had to maintain a proper business persona.

I shouldn't have panicked. I should have said: 'I do apologise but I have to leave you right now for another meeting. Sorry, but it's very confidential and I can't give you any details.'

That would have been perfect. He'd have been really unsettled and I could have skulked around until he'd gone and then had a proper rummage. I thought about it resentfully on the 30 minute journey. I actually wanted to do him even more harm than I was planning at the outset.

What kind of fool am I?

Whichwaytoturntoday · 25/07/2015 18:18

I would email them and express your disappointment. See what they say.

Ilovecrapcrafts · 25/07/2015 18:50

Apologies I misread and thought the whole candle had been used!

mrspremise · 25/07/2015 18:53

FYI, Card Factory do a lovely pomegranate candle that doesn't cost £40 Grin

BlisterFace · 27/07/2015 15:27

Well Diptyque have done well out of this thread because it prompted me to go and buy another one of their candles (and room fragrance and EDP, because I am a lush and a disgrace).

I can confirm they are still ruddy gorgeous!!
