to take back my used Jo Malone candles as the quality has been declining for years

Anyone else noticed the decline in quality both of the fragrance and flam burn.

I bought the pomegranate noir and I'm really disappointed , was thankfully the small one for 40 quid but still want to return it but I have had it lit for an hour or so.

Definitely take it back. You couldn't have found out it was sub standard without burning it.

I've never understood the attraction with Jo Malone (I sell it at work) and am amazed it sells so well at the price it is. You're really payng for the name, IMO.

I do love candles, but couldn't pay a lot for one, I'm too mean!

MontserratCaballe · 24/07/2015 19:54

OP, I would try to take it back, suggesting that perhaps it is from a dud batch as it doesn't have the same fragrance as you've had in the past.

I love candles but rarely buy them myself. Agree that diptychs is now better than Jo m for the cash. I ask for them now as gifts instead. There is also a brand called St Eval which I've bought in local independent shops for about a tenner which have fab fragrances and don't smell synthetic like some of the cheaper ones. They are in eBay too and might be worth a shot. Their rosemary and pine one is much better than the White Co Christmas one, for example and about a third of the price.

swisscheesetony · 24/07/2015 19:56

You know I didn't "get" posh candles until an amazing anonymous (ya boo sucks) miner sent me a posh one in the post. It was absolutely amazing and I shall lust after them for all eternity! :)

swisscheesetony · 24/07/2015 19:58

Err... Just to clarify - will last after candle, not anonymous miner (mumsnetter).

florascotia · 24/07/2015 20:01

Each to their own, but I've never found a JoMalone scent or scented candle that I liked, now or in the past. To me - and this is only a personal opinion - they are all very weak or shallow, and all with an undertone of something rather like lavatories or maybe just loo freshener. But we all smell things differently ...

Sidalee7 · 24/07/2015 20:03

Swiss cheese - I read that as miner, and was slightly confused!

Another Diptique fan here, Jo Malone reminds me of my ex - I can't smell pomegranate noir without feeling bitter haha!

Notso · 24/07/2015 20:05

Why not just take it back and see if they say you are unreasonable or not.

Alternatively you could always complain about it online and hope someone from the company will read it and give you some free stuff...Hmm

TinyManticore · 24/07/2015 20:10

I was actually responding to the £325 candle, not the £40 ones. Not that I could afford to spend £40 on a candle either. Of course everyone is entitled to spend their money on whatever they wish.

Bonkerz · 24/07/2015 20:21

Never understood the appeal of Jo Malone but that's probably because I used to bottle the stuff and stick the labels on etc and genuinely thought it was a £1 shop product!!!!!!

NoisyOyster · 24/07/2015 20:22

Ridiculous comment mrspremise the op can spend her money on whatever she bloody well chooses

Should I not buy shoes / cake / whatever the hell I want this month because of starving children in Africa?! ffs Hmm

op if they're not doing as they should, take it to the shop and have a word. You never know, they may have had a batch that went wrong in the factory

DarkNavyBlue · 24/07/2015 20:24

Another one who can't buy Jo Malone cos it reminds me of my ex!

Just been looking at the Jo Loves website. Looks fab.

I wouldn't spend £40+ on a candle, as it just isn't something that I see the value in. It wouldn't give me any more pleasure than a £2 one from Ikea.

Different people spend their money on different things. I once spent nearly £200 on a seatpost for my bike and I've just spent over £500 on a drysuit so I can go scuba diving in cold water without freezing to death.

But I've probably spent less than a tenner on candles in my entire lifetime and most of them are still sat in a drawer.

What I don't get is the notion that a very expensive version is automatically more of a treat that everyone should love. Anytime anyone on here asks 'what can I get SIL/DSIS/MIL for about £50, someone will always suggest a Jo Malone/Diptythingy candle. If someone was going to buy me a present for £40, I would be disappointed with a single small candle two bottles of gin would be much better.

thecatfromjapan · 24/07/2015 20:40

I'm a bit jealous of 5daychicken's username.

On the subject of candles: my loyalty is now to 'True Grace' and also to 'Cir' which are in TKMaxx every so often.

Poor OP. It's a shame when a luxury that used to lift your spirits isn't what it was. On the plus side, think of the fun you can have looking for a replacement.

To be really, really honest, I have found that fancy gin now hits the spot that fancy candles used to do for.Wink

AgentProvocateur · 24/07/2015 20:41

A Jo Malone candle is my go-to gift for friends' birthdays or if we're overnight guests in someone's house, and I agree that they've become less scented recently. I always buy fig, and it's definitely not as strong a scent as it used to be.

The5DayChicken · 24/07/2015 20:46

Why thank you catfromjapan. I ditch names after 6 months or so when I get paranoid that I've become identifiable so there will eventually be a chance to steal Wink

thenightsky · 24/07/2015 20:52

Snigger at anonymous miner

Just imagining Arthur Scargill at home, enjoying his £350 candles Grin

WorktoLive · 24/07/2015 20:55

I sniggered too Thenightsky. I can just imagine my ex miner dad and his pit cronies reactions to candles costing even £40 let alone £350.

There would be much swearing and comments along the lines of 'they must think you have more money than sense'

ilovesooty · 24/07/2015 20:58

Why did you buy it is the quality has been declining for years?

ilovesooty · 24/07/2015 20:59

And every day's a school day. I'd no idea people paid so much for candles.

marssparklesdownonme · 24/07/2015 21:25

I second Montserrat Caballe Sr Eval candles from Cornwall are gorgeous. I got some when visiting the Eden project but have also bought them at Sandringham visitor centre. They have a website. My favourite is Tranquility.
