to take back my used Jo Malone candles as the quality has been declining for years

Anyone else noticed the decline in quality both of the fragrance and flam burn.

I bought the pomegranate noir and I'm really disappointed , was thankfully the small one for 40 quid but still want to return it but I have had it lit for an hour or so.

Just buy Diptyque next time. Candles and room fragrances are divine. Have an Ofresia one lit at the moment and would absolutely recommend.

bangbangprettypretty · 24/07/2015 21:27

I get bought them as presents, or payday treats for myself - they're occasional in this house.

I buy £40 candles because I like them, though I'm sure some MNers would prefer if we all lit a single tallow candle and sat around it to keep warm, or even better, made them ourselves out of home-rendered pig fat Wink

TheoriginalLEM · 24/07/2015 21:31

Gosh, i know i would be disappointed with these candles, because with that price tag i would be expecting ALOT!! £40 for a candle??? who knew!

But yes, up to you how you spend your money, dont really think you can take them back if they are used but then how do you know they are crap until you actually use them?

Buxtonstill · 24/07/2015 21:58

Email them to complain. A friend of mine did and it was resolved very satisfactorily.
If you choose to spend £40 on a candle, good luck to you. All those who have questioned you, Yes there are people who struggle to afford food, but how do you know that the OP doesn't give to charity? Do you?
Personally I prefer Yankee Candles.

sallyknowsit · 24/07/2015 22:11

Thanks for all the candle suggestions, some homework for me!

For the pp that talked about people going hungry, I presume you have no electronic devices, no phone line, just eat lentils, no electricity, no toilet paper and donate all your time and money to charity?

Jo Malone lime basil and mandarin candle scent to me automatically takes me back to my happy place after I'd just got my first flat keys, left my horrifically abusive ex and a Jo Malone candle had been the one thing I'd promised myself for two years if I ever became 'free' . it makes me smile just thinking about how proud of myself I was going to buy that blinking candle.

They're my go-to gift for my Mam.

I'd email and complain, its an expensive product to be sub-par.

cerealqueen · 24/07/2015 23:12

£40? Holy shit, you have money to burn, literally.

At that price, yes, I would actually go back and say you've had them a while and they are just not doing the do like they used to and ask for your money back.

CelibacyCakeAndFuckThePO · 24/07/2015 23:23

I can't afford Jo Malone but I do love smelly candles.

I buy some of the Yankee range (not the food smelling range which is rank, the citrus and cotton/linen fragrances are more to my taste) but then a friend bought my a WoodWick candle. Oh it's lovely, I think a bit more expensive than Yankee but much better quality IMO. Plus the wick crackles, like a log fire, as it burns. tis very relaxing.

Chchchchanging · 25/07/2015 07:53

Random thread hijack
To the person who bottles for them is there a factory shop anywhere??

noperspectiveonthis · 25/07/2015 08:02

swisscheese that might have been me - I sent a mumsnetter a candle at Christmas! A brand called Emma's So Naturals.

The other nice brand is True Grace - £16 for a large tin candle. Their Moroccan Rose smells out of this world!

noperspectiveonthis · 25/07/2015 08:05

(Have just seen that someone has already mentioned True Grace).

DameDoom · 25/07/2015 08:47

I agree OP. I haven't bought one for a couple of years since a lime basil and mandarin one chuffed black smoke all over the kitchen and I couldn't really smell the oils.
I have switched to Neom and Diptyque - lovely clean burn and fab, room-filling scents.
You get loyalty points if you buy from the Neom website or leave a review. Their reed diffusers are epic.
I love candles too.

whothehellknows · 25/07/2015 09:18

I'm glad I'm not the only one with a smelly obsession. I've never bought Jo Malone candles because that's the best part of a weekly shop, but Yankees are always on my birthday and christmas wish list. But when my ship comes in, I'll have to get a Jo Malone one just to see if it's that good.

mrsdavidbowie · 25/07/2015 09:23

I love White Company diffusers...I have Seychelles at the moment.
£25 but usually a 20% code somewhere.
They last ages..I've had these since February and still going strong.
I've tried cheaper ones but false economy.

Goshthatsspicy · 25/07/2015 09:27

I would definitely complain. It isn't fit for purpose is it?
Anyway, some people are more enclined to like nice smells around them.
I find waitrose actually quite good.
There is one from Morrisons, l think? It is cranberry - nice, expensive smelling...

SinglePringle · 25/07/2015 09:28

The True Grace Wild Lime is exactly the same as the JM Lime, Basil one. And at £25 (ish), better value too.

londonrach · 25/07/2015 09:28

£40....£40.... (Shocked). Shakes head, overcomes the shock and replys to op. You cant return a used candle. Just stopped buying overpriced this candle and get it from someone else. If you want to do anything write to jm and let them now...

paulapompom · 25/07/2015 09:47

I would contact them at least and tell them you feel quality has changed /declined. After comments about price you may think this is sarcasm/goadyness BUT I promise it isn't! I have been getting Morrison's own scented candles for a couple of months (just moved near a Morrisons ) and people have commented on the fragrance being really lovely. Got a couple of vanilla for one room and every time I walk in there it smells great, I haven't even lit them yet. Fragrance choice is very limited but what there is smells wonderful and the prices are very different to Yankee etc (which I also like ).

KittensOnAPlane · 25/07/2015 10:38

of course you can take it back if it is 'faulty' - its a product in the same way a pair of shoes are, or a fridge!

The issue I have with spending £40+ on a candle, you're basically paying an enormous mark up for the marketing, its just the same basic ingredients - wax, oils etc

Yes you might find that it smells nice, they might have used a better quality oil, but in the end like a lot of things in the world... you're not paying for the design or the end product, you're paying for the glossy adverts in Vogue etc

hambo · 25/07/2015 11:01

You must try Isle of Skye candles...soy based so no black smoke and smells to die for, even when they are unlit. Www.isleofskyecandles.co.uk

hambo · 25/07/2015 11:02

Ooops it is www.skycandles.co.uk

Ilovecrapcrafts · 25/07/2015 11:08

Last time I was in jo Malone a woman was returning her small purfume- the pump tube wasn't long enough to reach the very bottom of the bottle therefore you couldn't stress the last few drops. I thought she was crazy and JM were refusing to refund but actually when I thought about it she had a point, If it's £40 for 20mls and you can't access the last 2/3 mls that's a decent amount of money wasted.

I have to say I haven't noticed the quality declining but will pay attention tonight!

Bubblesinthesummer · 25/07/2015 11:17

Why did you buy it is the quality has been declining for years?

Must admit, that was my thought.

AgentProvocateur · 25/07/2015 11:25

Hambo, www.skyecandles.co.uk Wink But thanks for the recommendation. I'm in edinburgh later this week, so I'll buy one and try it out.

cuntyMcCunterson · 25/07/2015 11:28

OP I complained by email about the scent quality from one of the pomegranate noir candles as I was so disappointed (it smelled burnt and acrid) I received a full refund and a new candle in the post.
I didn't expect either and fully expected to be fobbed of a bit but to receive both was fabulous the second candle smelt much better
