to take back my used Jo Malone candles as the quality has been declining for years

Anyone else noticed the decline in quality both of the fragrance and flam burn.

I bought the pomegranate noir and I'm really disappointed , was thankfully the small one for 40 quid but still want to return it but I have had it lit for an hour or so.

OP posts:

£40 for a candle!? A small candle?
People actually spend 40 quid on a single, small candle, that is madness.

Ilovecrapcrafts · 25/07/2015 11:55

Yes lots of people do. That's why they sell them

idokidok13 · 25/07/2015 12:03

I honestly didn't know that £40 candles were a thing. I thought a tenner was expensive for a candle Blush

squoosh · 25/07/2015 12:22

Lots of people happily spend £40 on a candle. Lots of people spend even more than that!

Isn't it great we can spend out money on whatever we choose?

Jermajesty · 25/07/2015 12:25

Stop press, it's actually £42. I like Jo Malone candles & perfume, current favourite is wood sage & sea salt. And guess what, it's my money & I'll spend it on whatever I like. Ooooh!

Gruntfuttock · 25/07/2015 12:30

OP, did the decline in quality coincide with the company being sold to Estee Lauder in 1999?

idokidok13 · 25/07/2015 12:31

I didn't say "oh what an awful waste of money how DARE they!" I just said I was shocked that £40 candles are a thing, it seems mad to me that people reguarly buy £40 candles because I can't see what someone can do to a small candle that makes it worth that much.

Purplefrogeatsalily · 25/07/2015 12:31

Buy a nice Yankee Candle again and put the extra £30 to a charity that need it. You are lucky to be having a 'problem' with a £40 quid candle.

MrsBertMacklin · 25/07/2015 12:40

I buy Neom candles for £45, they're three times the size of Jo Malone ones.

I buy one every year which lasts me a year. Currently have three in rotation.

I love the look and smell of them, the fact that they burn completely evenly and without tunneling or releasing acrid smoke and I make no apologies for spending my money on what I want to spend it on.

All that said, OP, I believe Jo Malone candles are hugely overpriced. The company is very mysterious about what the candles are made of and the percentage of fragrance etc. They tend to tunnel from what I've seen and if you want to spend £40 on a candle I would recommend you look at some other options.

True Grace candles are very good value for money IMO, lovely and unusual fragrances and whilst not completely immune from tunelling or smoking, they do burn very well.

CaptainSwan · 25/07/2015 12:42

You should complain definitely- you couldn't tell what the quality was until you tried it out, and they didn't work as expected from previous purchases. I would expect a full refund from a company like that.

squoosh · 25/07/2015 12:47

Stealth boast.

limitedperiodonly · 25/07/2015 12:55

Of course you should take it back. How are you supposed to know that it's faulty unless you've used it?

They ought to refund or exchange it. If they don't, just don't buy from them again and tell them why. I wouldn't spend £40 on a candle, but so what if you do?

I know someone who complained about a bottle of Dior perfume that she thought smelled funny. The shop sent it back to Dior.

After a week she got a polite letter from Dior explaining that after rigorous tests they could find nothing wrong with their product but they'd used it all up. So they asked her to accept an enormous bottle, far bigger than hers, by way of apology.

This was in the late '70s. Things might have changed a bit since then Grin

limitedperiodonly · 25/07/2015 13:01

I can't see what someone can do to a small candle that makes it worth that much.

I can think of a couple of things off the top of my head but I prefer to use unscented candles for that kind of activity Wink

DoeEyedNear · 25/07/2015 13:09

Take it back

I'm another bomb cosmetics fan and also a fan of sainsburys candles.

GallopingFoxley · 25/07/2015 13:14

Yes of course you can take it back. You're a dissatisfied customer and they'll refund you or replace it as you wish. I recommend Diptique candles and have them dotted all over the house along with Neom ones. I've even got ones that cost over £50 ShockShockShock and I'm LOL ing at all the bitter, jealous comments on here by posters who can't seem to grasp that we all have different budgets and choose to spend our money as we so wish.

Baddz · 25/07/2015 13:18

The price of the candle is irrelevant.
If you are unhappy with it you can and should take it back.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 25/07/2015 13:19

Seriously? People can get this worked up over what the OP chooses to spend HER bloody money on?!

Fucking madness

Judydreamsofhorses · 25/07/2015 13:22

My brother's brother-in-law works in JM, and says people are constantly returning candies because they smoke or don't throw scent. Definitely bring it back. It may be because it's their best seller (I don't know) but for what it's worth he's commented that it's most often the PN that are returned as faulty.

Ilovecrapcrafts · 25/07/2015 13:26

Yankee candles smell cheap and sickly

Viviennemary · 25/07/2015 13:29

I bought a couple of Jo Malone perfume's as I was swept away by the hype and thought they were something special. They're not. And as for all that money on a candle. I just couldn't. How could anybody.

squoosh · 25/07/2015 13:33

How could anybody?

Easily. Just as people spend lots of money on Premiership match tickets, expensive meals, weekend mini breaks, star wars memorabilia, golf club membership, train sets,........any number of things!

limitedperiodonly · 25/07/2015 13:36

I knew someone who didn't drink alcohol and droned on at me for wasting money on empty calories.

Thankfully I've almost forgotten about her. I only remember her when this kind of thread pops up.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 25/07/2015 13:44

Fuck me! On the back of this thread I've realised I was bought a £42 scented candle as part of my 50th birthday present from a group of friends. Do they know me at all? What a waste of money! I thought maybe they had £10 left over from my main present, (which I love) so bought something else. I would have preferred chocolate or wine or even maybe a slightly more expensive main present to a fucking £42 scented candle.

ClaudiaNaughton · 25/07/2015 13:44

Love squoosh. Always makes me smile.
