To not understand why people rave about Aldi.....

When, IMO it sells cheap, nasty, horrible food! I'm usually a Tesco shopper but I thought last month i'd try Aldi out, and to say I was disappointed was an understatement!

The fruit, yes was cheaper but it is also smaller in quantities and the raspberrys, strawberrys and blueberries looked mouldy and soft. The meat, especially the chicken was extremely fatty and the mince actually looked off and was a nasty grey colour! The tinned stuff was tasteless, the curry sauces were overloaded with too much spice and cheap ingredients and the chocolate was disgusting, so Aibu to not get why everyone goes mad for the place?.....

Are you always so passive agressive Sir? You don't sound very nice tbh.

SirChenjin · 18/07/2015 19:27

Gently - I'm afraid you must leave this thread. Iceland is one step too far.

Alisvolatpropiis · 18/07/2015 19:28

I think Aldi nappies are great. My family shopped there sometimes well before it was cool (one opened across the road from my Nan in about 2000) and recall it being fine. Don't think I'd do an entire shop there though.

Much prefer Morrisons for fresh meat/fish and fruit and veg.

SirChenjin · 18/07/2015 19:29

Oh dear Kardamyli - and there was me giving you a Star for deducing I worked for Aldi.

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 18/07/2015 19:30

Sir I never said it was me! I would never set foot in an Iceland. If my partner happens to pop in, get a quick defrost pudd once in a while... Can't stop that can I?

Please don't make me go to Netmums, I'm not a very huggy, hunny person Confused.....

RingtheBells · 18/07/2015 19:31

Well if you work there, you probably get a staff discount, so you would be silly to do your food shop elsewhere, also you are supporting your company. When DS was at home I used to get 15% Waitrose discount which was very handy.

Kardamyli · 18/07/2015 19:31

You really do work for Aldi Sir? I'm sure I read on another thread you had a different job, maybe I'm confusing you with someone else? Or you've changed job?

Either way, food in Aldi is still shit.

SpendSpendSpend · 18/07/2015 19:33

I cant stand Aldi.

I ve tried it afew times and cannot see the appeal.

It makes me laugh when the car park has 50k vehicles parked in it.

Its crap quality, shit customer service.

SirChenjin · 18/07/2015 19:33

No, Ring - I don't work for Aldi Grin

I feel you are passing the buck to that DP of yours somewhat Gently - get thee to Netmums, and take your salad cream with you Grin

isseywithcats · 18/07/2015 19:35

i used to go in aldi a few years ago and could never get that much i liked so have been going to asda for a while now, but have found my shopping bill going up and up in asda so decided to try lidl and aldi as a comparison, lidl i didnt get that much shopping and it came to the same as asda so wasnt that impressed, then went back in aldi last week got most of what i wanted and it was £17 cheaper than asda and yes i went through the whole receipt and compared online what i would have paid for the same products, i dont buy that many ready made sauces or frozen food so cant comment on those

but plusses the parma ham, whole fresh chicken, and quiches were lovely, the cat and dog food was cheaper and my lot scoffed it down, the slab cakes, crisps and chocolate wafers were equal to asdas own, the veg and potatoes were fresh and lasted long enough for me, the spaghetti was fine and i bought the cheapest one in there,

minus was the toilet rolls £2 for 6 is not cheaper than asda and it is horrid more like tracing paper so have gone back to asda shades but that was the only product i was dissapointed with

Kardamyli · 18/07/2015 19:36

God you really are a massive bundle of passive aggression Sir.

usualsuspect333 · 18/07/2015 19:36

Salad cream on MN? Shock

SirChenjin · 18/07/2015 19:42

Ah, you say the nicest things Kardamyli Smile

Yep, it appears salad cream has made its way to MN. Netmums have infiltrated us with their yellow gloop - get the shotgun and fire up the Quattro.

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 18/07/2015 19:43

I'm pregnant, I cannot be held accountable for anything bad/chavvy/non-middleclass I do! Stuff you lot, I'm going to have my bloody salad cream on everything - going to find me some nice Findus Crispy Pancakes or pour it into pasta and ketchup Angry.

SirChenjin · 18/07/2015 19:46

If you're pregnant then you definitely need to get to Netmums - they have a pregnancy calculator with little love hearts 'n everything, and say things like "ur bubz, ur rools hun" (which I think means you can have salad cream) Grin

I agree. The savings are there and you can do a shop quickly . I understand the appeal. But the choice isn't there. It's great for basics but that's it.

spancake · 18/07/2015 20:01

Erm...no I can't adapt, and fortunately I don't have to as we live in a free country and I can shop elsewhere. I will gladly pay a bit extra in a shop where my goods aren't launched at me to shove in to bags like a 'generation game' task. Again, no thanks! I agree with op.

Oliversmumsarmy · 18/07/2015 20:03

Have not tried Aldi but shop now entirely at Lidl. Used to be a Tesco shopper but went over to Lidl to save a bit of cash and would top up in Tesco. Now I shop entirely at Lidl as Tesco have stopped doing a lot of what I used to buy. I spend about £35 on a big shop then top up during the week a couple of times spending no more than £3-4 each time and it's all within 4 aisles. No searching up and down aisles walking miles to find where Tesco have hidden an item. No having to put up with Tesco thinking we are in their store for the shopping experience. Who has got time or the "shopping experience"

I had on Friday cause to visit Tesco, 1st time for many months. We had people over unexpectedly, I bought one of their £10 meal deal things, and an extra bottle of wine, a large cottage pie, a tub of hummus and a pack of 4 cheese dippers it came to over £26. (we do not eat meat in our household and we do not drink so am happy to be told this is the price of meat and alcohol) I particularly baulked at the £1.30 for the tub of hummus. I think it is about 75p for the same size in Lidl.

BollocksBudget · 18/07/2015 20:11

At the risk of getting myself an instant ban, I'd like to confess that I had never been into my local Iceland before until I found out last week that they now sell frozen 'Greggs' pasties and sausage rolls! Blush

I bought them and they were lovely although it did feel a bit strange eating them off a plate rather than out of a paper bag whilst window shopping Grin

borisgudanov · 18/07/2015 20:13

There are certain Aldi things I can't go without: their continental stuff. Wiener Schnitzel, Bratwurst, salami. Those boxes of dauphinoise potatoes or fried potatoes with bacon at 89p. Cheap as chips. I will get some other stuff I might need when I'm in there. But I will also go to Tesco, M&S, Sainsbury, our Guild of Q butcher, local baker, dairy etc. etc. Sometimes we cook from scratch, sometimes not. Horses for courses.

TinyManticore · 18/07/2015 20:17

Does anyone find that other supermarkets also do the 'scan everything as fast as humanly possibly and hurl it down the checkout at you' thing nowadays? I've had it happen a lot at sainsburys, I don't know if they've picked it up from Aldi.

SirChenjin · 18/07/2015 20:20

I find it depends on the supermarket Tiny. Sainsburys is where I do our top up, and they go so slowly and want to talk to me - or maybe it's just because I'm used to the fast scanning of Aldi. Our local Asda is quick - but the the checkout operators obviously hate their jobs because they are a grumpy lot.

BumpTheElephant · 18/07/2015 20:24

I don't buy meat or fruit/veg from Aldi or Lidl as the meat looks unpleasant and the fruit/veg is always poor quality and never has a date on, sick of soft mouldy onions.
Everything else is ok, I like Lidl for chocolate and tubs of yoghurt.
Aldi isn't great in my opinion.
I find other supermarkets much better for fresh stuff.

SueBigFatSue · 18/07/2015 20:36

Salad cream is the best kind of salad dressing. I say this as a food connoisseur Smile I cream the salad myself and sell it for £2.50 for 50ml. It's all the rage at the school fair and PTA meetings.

Moving on, I like Aldi. End of. That's that. Deal with it.
