To not understand why people rave about Aldi.....

When, IMO it sells cheap, nasty, horrible food! I'm usually a Tesco shopper but I thought last month i'd try Aldi out, and to say I was disappointed was an understatement!

The fruit, yes was cheaper but it is also smaller in quantities and the raspberrys, strawberrys and blueberries looked mouldy and soft. The meat, especially the chicken was extremely fatty and the mince actually looked off and was a nasty grey colour! The tinned stuff was tasteless, the curry sauces were overloaded with too much spice and cheap ingredients and the chocolate was disgusting, so Aibu to not get why everyone goes mad for the place?.....

And their version of Pringles .Much less salty
And their flowers last ages-bought some Red Roses last Valentines and hy lasted two weeks

spancake · 18/07/2015 18:20

Don't like aldi or lidl, they're both like shopping on holiday when you can't find exactly what you're after and can't quite trust what you do find. No thanks.

Postchildrenpregranny · 18/07/2015 18:25

Yes I've heard they pay their staff (comparatively) well youare

fourtothedozen · 18/07/2015 18:29

spancake- so you can't adapt?

So true MrsJavy! I've just remembered that we also used to be taken on expeditions to pick blaeberries (small wild versions of blueberries). I seem to remember there was always a long walk involved.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 18/07/2015 18:36

Vegetarian so don't have an opinion on the meat.

Fruit and veg is hit and miss, I approve of their lack of use by dates and reliance on their own and customers' eyes and noses to determine whether something is useable or not, but it can lead to buying fairly old produce. You need to inspect what you are buying, but I don't object to doing that.

Bread, butter, cheese, tinned stuff, snacks all equal to or better than the tesco equivalent (middle range, not value and not finest) and cheaper.

I buy everything I need and skip buying lots of things I think I want but don't really. I save lots of ££ which is important to me as I don't have much ££. If saving money wasn't a priority I'd go to sainsburys and there is nothing wrong with that if that's your situation. Those of us who need to cut down on the ££ will appreciate aldi and lidl more!

PrincessTheresaofLiechtenstein · 18/07/2015 18:51

It's hit and miss for me regarding the food. What I will never understand is the random fishing/riding/DIY /camping stuff in the middle. I mean the range changes every two weeks so how would you know when is the right time to go and buy a pink helmet or a kids' sleeping bag or whatever? If you need something like that, surely you go to a specialist shop at the time you need it....

2boysnamedR · 18/07/2015 18:57

I don't have either lidl or aldi within ten miles so seldom go to either. I think both are ok. Prefer checkouts at the big supermarkets. If there was one closer and I could go more often and do smaller shops I'd love it.

I don't know how I could only shop there and no where else. I don't think they have everything I need when I go

IamTheWhoreofBabylon · 18/07/2015 19:01

Not liking Aldi is a goaty thread Confused
FFS what is mumsnet coming too
Oh hail the great God Aldi
It's a shop FFS

IamTheWhoreofBabylon · 18/07/2015 19:03

Can you be banned from mumsnet for not liking Aldi?

windchime · 18/07/2015 19:08

Lidl and Aldi are for people who do not want quality food. It is cheap shite. These are people who used to be able to afford to shop at Waitrose, but are now on the bones of their arse, so are trying to convince themselves and us Lidl and Aldi are a lifestyle choice.

Kardamyli · 18/07/2015 19:09

I suspect soBabylon

All those who think Aldi is shit will no doubt wake up tomorrow to find they've been a banned

usualsuspect333 · 18/07/2015 19:10

I believe you get an official warning from MNHQ if you state on MN that you don't like Aldi.

Admitting you shop at Asda or Tesco gets you a ban.

SirChenjin · 18/07/2015 19:13

Bullying Kardamyli?! You delicate flower, Nah, just explaining why they can sell food more cheaply, as opposed to selling cheap shit. Major difference.

SirChenjin · 18/07/2015 19:15

Nope wind - never shopped in Waitrose.

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 18/07/2015 19:16

Usual, what about...some possible person.... who may..... possibly.... shop in Iceland? Do they get hunted down, dragged through the streets naked, with a bell around the neck, while MNHQ shout 'unclean'?

usualsuspect333 · 18/07/2015 19:18

The iceland shoppers get catapulted over to Netmums.

Kardamyli · 18/07/2015 19:20

Haha sir you are funny. As many others here have pointed out the food sold in Aldi etc is shit. Cheap yes, good quality no.

I wouldn't believe everything I read in a Business Insider puff piece either. Oh wait, do you work at Aldi, is that why you're so defensive and offended?

goodasitgets · 18/07/2015 19:20

My local Aldi is rubbish
However the Lidl is great. Their protein bread rolls are lovely and 39p each. The danpak salted spreadable is decent and I keep eating the granola (fruit and nut one)
The greek yoghurt (creamy one in a huge tub) is what started me shopping there

RingtheBells · 18/07/2015 19:21

I've never heard anyone in RL rave about Aldi and Lidl like they do on MN. Our local Lidl is a horrible, I went in there once as they had some camping stuff I wanted to look at but that was also cheap shite.

Hestheone · 18/07/2015 19:23

I've been going for 3 weeks now and I love it

Baddz · 18/07/2015 19:24

I like Aldi but I don't buy meat there as it always looks a bit grey
The cleaning stuff is excellent, as is the non branded medicine.
The chocolate is lovely, herbal tea very nice.
The make up and face cream is excellent and cheap.
We buy the uht milk as its 49p a litre.
Cheese is good, ice cream is good, fruit and veg can be hit and miss.
We also shop at asda.

:)

SirChenjin · 18/07/2015 19:24

That's right, I work for Aldi - have a Star.

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 18/07/2015 19:25

Ah, well then unusual, I hope that individual does not out themselves. Even if Iceland spicy chicken strips are divine (with salad cream, no less Shock).

dilbert19912 · 18/07/2015 19:26

Every few months I get a goat on with paying silly tesco prices and go to aldi, I love the savings but the quality isn't great, so I leave it again until tesco piss me off.
