To not understand why people rave about Aldi.....

When, IMO it sells cheap, nasty, horrible food! I'm usually a Tesco shopper but I thought last month i'd try Aldi out, and to say I was disappointed was an understatement!

The fruit, yes was cheaper but it is also smaller in quantities and the raspberrys, strawberrys and blueberries looked mouldy and soft. The meat, especially the chicken was extremely fatty and the mince actually looked off and was a nasty grey colour! The tinned stuff was tasteless, the curry sauces were overloaded with too much spice and cheap ingredients and the chocolate was disgusting, so Aibu to not get why everyone goes mad for the place?.....

If it's so crap why are so many people shopping there, and continuing to do so? Ours is hideously busy now so I'm always pleased when I hear about someone hating it.

However with regards to the meat, you will find that the major supermarkets buy from the large processors, as do Aldi and Lidl, so the pork loin steaks will be pretty much the same as Tesco's bog standard ones, just packed and labelled in a different tray, as will the mince, it all comes out of the same batch, just the trays are changed. This does not apply to Waitrose and Booths who have their own buyers, either dealing directly with the farmers or at the markets.

I have no problems with the fruit, veg or anything else, the odd thing isn't great but it's the same everywhere. With four teenagers food doesn't have time to go off in this household, so I can't comment on its perceived lifespan.

CrystalCove · 18/07/2015 17:23

Oh come on Theres nothing wrong with using jars, it's called a balanced diet for a reason. I cook loads from scratch but don't always have time.

Re Aldi I don't like some of the veg but have never had a problem with their chicken breasts or mince. I would t rave about it but I do like it for certain other things to.

outtolunchagain · 18/07/2015 17:24

Don't mind LIDL BUT our Local Aldi is revolting , stuff piled in aisles , including stuff which is out of date , the meat is awful very gristly , stuff all muddled eg milk in the middle of the meat and the semi skimmed on the other side of the store .Bread usually pretty squashed and the floor is black with grime .I understand the one about 15 miles away is better though

Kardamyli · 18/07/2015 17:24

I agree OP aldi is crap, so is lidl. The reason the food is so cheap is that it is poor quality. I'm not a fan of tesco either tbh.

I'd rather eat less and have good quality than buy the cheap shit sold in discount food shops. Even things like pasta are better if you buy good quality italian brands rather than cheap stuff from aldi which turns to mush in the pan.

TinyManticore · 18/07/2015 17:25

I don't want to spend hours making something, you do. Enjoy mincing your garlic with your pestle and mortar and I wish you many happy hours of fantasising about bringing down the Uncle Ben's empire.

XiCi · 18/07/2015 17:27

The Aldi by us is great. I can't get everything there so I do a couple of ocado shops a month as well but save so much from the Aldi shops. I don't by tinned stuff or sauces but their deli is great, continental meats, olives, houmous etc all cheaper and better than other supermarkets, ditto the fresh prawns and smoked salmon. The steaks are nicer than the ones I have had from the butcher. Some of the frozen convenience stuff is lovely too, the salmon en croute is a big family favourite

SirChenjin · 18/07/2015 17:28

The reason the food is so cheap is that it is poor quality

You're factually incorrect there. There are many reasons why Aldi and Lidl are able to sell cheaply - see here (if you're genuinely interested in learning more as opposed to simply stirring with your 'cheap shit') uk.businessinsider.com/why-aldi-is-so-cheap-2015-4

Mrsjayy · 18/07/2015 17:28

Im not keen either its ok somethings are nice others not so much the fruit needs to be eaten quick the pasta is rank ive tried it 3 times to make sure it tastes gritty mince isnt meant to be bright red like you get in tesco its pumped with ^something to make it look fresher. I get odds and sods in Aldi but not a full shop

Buttwing · 18/07/2015 17:28

I love my local aldi. Never experienced any of the things op said I don't buy any processed food or jar because I'm doing slimming world but all the meat I've had had been good except one chicken which I tried to cook a day before the use by date and it had gone off. It saves me £100 a week shopping there (we have a big family and four animals) agree with the tills though it really annoys me when they throw things at me!

LavenderLeigh · 18/07/2015 17:29

I agree.
Lidl is ever so much better.
Tesco, on the other hand, is over priced mediocre quality. I used to shop there but saw sense and get great quality food for about half the price in Lidl.
I don't understand why anyone would shop regularly in Tesco if they have SN skater native. Other than snobbery

fourtothedozen · 18/07/2015 17:30

*I buy frozen mash as well as jars of sauce.

I don't think not liking Aldi makes you a snob.

SirChenjin · 18/07/2015 17:33

Frozen mash? Is that made from local potatoes usual?

Mrsjayy · 18/07/2015 17:34

Whats Booths?

Gileswithachainsaw · 18/07/2015 17:34

Ok I have to ask, this salmon en croute.

what the fuck did we do wrong cos I found it vile. it was tasteless and watery. no one ate it.

RingtheBells · 18/07/2015 17:35

i don't really like Aldi, Lidl, Tesco or Asda. I usually shop at our very large Waitrose which has lots of room down the aisles and lots of very helpful staff if I need anything. I do buy some ready made stuff and like things like the Yorkshire Provender soup which they sell and the yummy New York cheesecake. I find I can buy all my shopping from there and it is not thrown at me at the till. I also get my free coffee and newspaper from there also.

outtolunchagain · 18/07/2015 17:36

Nothing like salmon em croute in our branch

SirChenjin · 18/07/2015 17:36

It's a furrin thing Mrsjayy - we don't have Booths round these parts. It's a supermarket - bit like Waitrose. The one in Windermere is vay naice

TinyManticore · 18/07/2015 17:36

I didn't know frozen mash was a thing. I don't like mash though, so I wouldn't be looking, I suppose.

TwilightMad · 18/07/2015 17:37

Thanks, Usual. I'm not saying I detest everything that they sell, I mean I like things like their milk, cheese and toilet rolls, but there has been a lot of items that I've not liked.

SquinkiesRule · 18/07/2015 17:39

Our Local Aldi has lovely fruit and veg, we also buy the nice sauages from there, they sell Edwards of Conwy sausages for less than Asda so get those.
The sandwich meat is just as good as the asda stuff and cheaper as is butter and milk, toilet paper and washing detergent and softner. We get a few jars of Bolognese sauce to add to meat and veg over pasta, but not other cans.
Still get bacon, biscuits, squash, and a few other bits from asda each week. Things that Aldi don't stock like proper oxo, I've never managed to do the whole shop there, but it does save me a fortune in what I do get.

Mrsjayy · 18/07/2015 17:40

Oh righr Nae ocado nae Booths thiscountry is rubbish Grin

TinyManticore · 18/07/2015 17:41

I don't think it's snobby not to like it either. At least you've tried it - I know a few people who went in, didn't recognise any brand names and wrote the whole place off as selling crap. Trying stuff and not liking it is to the same thing.

RingtheBells · 18/07/2015 17:41

I like Aunt Bessies frozen mash and also the mash in the ready meal type tray that is in the fridges which you heat in the microwave.
