To not understand why people rave about Aldi.....

When, IMO it sells cheap, nasty, horrible food! I'm usually a Tesco shopper but I thought last month i'd try Aldi out, and to say I was disappointed was an understatement!

The fruit, yes was cheaper but it is also smaller in quantities and the raspberrys, strawberrys and blueberries looked mouldy and soft. The meat, especially the chicken was extremely fatty and the mince actually looked off and was a nasty grey colour! The tinned stuff was tasteless, the curry sauces were overloaded with too much spice and cheap ingredients and the chocolate was disgusting, so Aibu to not get why everyone goes mad for the place?.....

We buy 99% of our food in Aldi. Not convenience food but raw ingredients iykwim? Though I did buy the specially selected stuffed pastas this week adn dh had the aubergine one for dinner last night as I was out and he said it was delicious.

There are very few things we don't like from there and most of it is really excellent quality - I have served stuff using Aldi ingredients to my visiting family and they asked was it M&S. We really love it!

usualsuspect333 · 18/07/2015 17:00

I hope you made that crusty bread. It's so much better than that shop bought bread.

Chchchchangeabout · 18/07/2015 17:01

Not tried Aldi but our two local Tescos are rank.

SirChenjin · 18/07/2015 17:01

It's absolutely fine. I buy it from there all the time. Their Specially Selected mince is delicious, and they recently had wagu burgers which were amazing. Not local of course Grin

GhostsComeWith · 18/07/2015 17:03

We had venison from there last year which was great and I really love their salmon en croute - much nicer than other versions!

MadMum2015 · 18/07/2015 17:04

Yes I think the branches must differ a lot. We have an Aldi and Lidl opposite each other and tbh in that location the Lidl always wins. I love their bakery, deli, dairy stuff and have been quite impressed with their fresh meat.

The issue I have with both of them is that if you had a specific shopping list they almost always won't have everything you need. And often of quite basic things like tomato purée and cucumbers. The limited supply chain is obviously what keeps things cheap but it's why they can't really be more than add-on shop for me.

Viviennemary · 18/07/2015 17:05

I don't like it much either. I like to know what I'm buying and like to get the same thing twice. I also like to buy branded stuff which they don't stock.

TinyManticore · 18/07/2015 17:05

I fucking love jars of sauce. Curry, chilli, pasta sauce. Why piss about with fifty other ingredients for hours on end when you can chuck a jar in and get your dinner made in ten minutes?
Also, I've seen packs of gone off grey mince in every supermarket going. You just don't buy those ones.

knittingdad · 18/07/2015 17:08

I do as much shopping at Aldi/Lidl as I can. There are sometimes a few misses among the hits, eg, the strawberry jam and peanut butter from Aldi disappointed me.

In general though I find the food to be as good as at any other supermarket, and quite often better (for example the peanut butter at Lidl is better than any own brand peanut butter at any other supermarket).

TheRealAmyLee · 18/07/2015 17:08

Often these things vary by store. The fresh produce in our Aldi is as op described but I find Asda not much better! I shop at Tesco because it is cheaper for the things I buy. I am lucky enough to have costco membership so I rarely buy supermarket meat.

SirChenjin · 18/07/2015 17:09

Tiny - brown/grey mince hasn't gone off.

Gileswithachainsaw · 18/07/2015 17:11

We used to shop in aldi. used to be fab. but I bought ingredients as opposed to jarred sauces which are rank no matter what or where you buy. agree on that point.

fruit and veg was hit and miss bit no more than anywhere else. toilet roll kitchen roll etc couldn't care less about so can't give an opinion either way on that.

Our local store however has gone massively down hill. We never could manage a full shop but managed without a few bits until we could get them. but they started stocking less and less of what we needed so it was starting to become pointless bothering to go. agree the neat is awful. always looks revolting or slimy or grey and was starting to be dumped on the shop floor when they pulled it off the shelf for being out of date.

We no longer shop there as having to go to lidl aldi and still have to go to sainsbury to complete a weeks shop meant when you add the top up shops onto the shopping bill it was no cheaper than going to morrissons .

I'm massively disappointed tbh. and relieved that at least through our financially difficult period it was good enough

sadly now it's just depressing. would love to see it restored to its former glory

TwilightMad · 18/07/2015 17:11

Oh, so I'm not only goady, I'm thick too?.....thanks. Crikey I only asked what all the fuss was about shopping at Aldi, I wish I hadn't of bothered now.

OP posts:
TinyManticore · 18/07/2015 17:11

Fair enough. I'd still choose a pack that looked nicer though.
The only things I've tried from Aldi that were revolting were the mayonnaise and ketchup.

fourtothedozen · 18/07/2015 17:13

TinyManticore- if you don't see the reason then good for you.
Star

Why bother "pissing about" with food when we can just eat crap.
You present a convincing argument.

TwilightMad · 18/07/2015 17:15

Jesus, fourtothedozen stop being so nasty and judgemental!

OP posts:
SirChenjin · 18/07/2015 17:16

Oh me too - brown/grey mince doesn't look nice, and I wouldn't choose to buy it, but's it fine to eat.

No, you're only a bit thick to generalise about an international chain of supermarkets to that extent OP.

fourtothedozen · 18/07/2015 17:18

Quite an agressive statement TwilightMad

SirChenjin · 18/07/2015 17:18

four - get off your high horse and stick it back in the stable please, and do us all a favour.

TinyManticore · 18/07/2015 17:20

There's nothing remotely aggressive about me admitting to being a lazy cook. You cook whatever you wish. I shall do the same. It doesn't make you better than anyone.

fourtothedozen · 18/07/2015 17:20

Contained within your post is the idea that some of us are "pissing about".

We don't see it that way. You are being judgemental in suggesting that I am "pissing about with fifty other ingredients for hours on end"

I don't consider my cooking "pissing about".

dannydyerismydad · 18/07/2015 17:21

I've tried a few times, but I've had too many disappointing things.

The crumpets that taste of stale burnt plastic, the eggs with the pale yolks that go all watery when I try and scramble them and the tiny meat range. Perhaps we have a bad one near us. More floor space seems to be dedicated to random DIY tools and slippers than actual food.

Dowser · 18/07/2015 17:22

Love Booths ;-)

Our Aldi is pretty good.

Our tesco doesn't put everything out on the shelves, so the shop has lots of half empty shelves, wide aisles that they are paying so much per sq foot rates and / or rent for that you could park a jumbo jet in . Apparently the new store manager doesn't like a messy store.

Don't care for asda so it's aldi or morrisons for us.

usualsuspect333 · 18/07/2015 17:22

I buy frozen mash as well as jars of sauce.

Watcha think of that. four

TwilightMad · 18/07/2015 17:23

Aggressive?......towards who exactly? As far as I'm concerned Tiny simplt put across what she thought in her own way, and she wasn't being aggressive towards anyone.
