to think 'the sun' is utter scum over the queen's 'nazi salute' ?

it might be 'historical significance' but is it really ? the film taken in 1933 shows the royal family doing nazi salutes. the 'salute' was not really known about then as to what it would come to signify and this seems scummy behaviour on behalf of the sun to print it.
everyone now involved is dead, but the queen still has to hear it,
i'm not into royalty but this seems shitty in my book.

It's also worth remembering (for context) that the House of Windsor was founded by King George V by royal proclamation on 17 July 1917, when he changed the name of the British Royal Family from the German Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

The family name of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha came from Prince Albert (married to Queen Victoria). Mind you, marriages within royal families across Europe were pretty incestuous to maintain royal blood lines.

YeOldTrout · 18/07/2015 10:41

Princess Elizabeth was eight years old, iirc. I wonder what daft things I did when I was 8yo.

Baddz · 18/07/2015 10:44

Well documented meetings and assignations.
With well born women who shared his love of horse carriage racing.
Hardly gossip.
Fact.

Baddz · 18/07/2015 10:46

I find it all really fascinating tbh.
I hope in future generations we will look back and laugh in wonder at the current system.
My only hope is that Charles is so very unpopular that we have a revolution!
:)
Vive la revolution!

LaurieMarlow · 18/07/2015 10:48

MrsO you're talking nonsense. I for one have never read a royal gossip magazine in my life.

But I have an interest in the past and future of this country - and find the idea of living under monarchical system morally and intellectually difficult.

I also think it sends out an insecure message to the world. Why do Brits need this outdated pomp and ceremony in the age of the modern nation state?

The controlled PR and sycophantic media are some of the most insidious things surrounding the royal family -so yes I take an interest in it and contribute to debate.

I would love to see the text that Harry sent to his GM this morning Grin

BertrandRussell · 18/07/2015 10:52

It's not about the Queen. It's about the Royal Family's sympathy with the Nazi party. And they were not alone. People on the Left were not blameless in this either. Or the middle and working classes. But they were not the people in charge!

Sorry but focusing on someone's sex life is gossiping. To be taken seriously as a Republican you need to focus on how well read you are and on well thought out, logical arguments for why we shouldn't have a royal family and not try and discredit them by gossiping about their supposed "affairs".

BertrandRussell · 18/07/2015 10:57

"
Let's not mention the Daily Mail...."

Oh do let's! Grin

Bakeoffcake · 18/07/2015 11:01

The sun has always been scum. It depresses me that so many people buy it. They have ruined many normal people's lives and they don't give a shit.

This is just another example of it, I'm sure it won't bother the queen that much, she has seen worse in the media about her family.

and Phillip has most definitely had affairs. It's is very well knowna me alsmost expected in those circles. Why do you think Charles thought he could get away with it?

Oh, we've all got excellent arguments against a monarchy. You don't need to be 'well read' (although I'm sure at all are) just aware that inherited privilege is both wrong and stupid.

The peccadilloes don't mention the Man in the Iron Mask and repugnant political views are just the icing on this particular cakeGrin.

Behooven · 18/07/2015 11:05

YANBU
Can't believe people buy and read this type of crap.

Bakeoffcake · 18/07/2015 11:05

Mrs0501- that's a great way to shut down the plebs finding out what actually goes on with these people.

MrsO501 · 18/07/2015 11:06

It doesn't matter if he has or hasn't had affairs. I was just saying that I am not impressed when republicans are overly interested in that type of royal gossip and use it as part of their argument.
If you dislike the royal family's inherited wealth and social position that's fine, but then don't start being so interested in them personally that you want to find out about their sex lives!

Bakeoffcake · 18/07/2015 11:06

I agree Ego, the DM is an equally nasty newspaper.

Bakeoffcake · 18/07/2015 11:08

So there are now rules as to what Republicans are allowed to "be interested in" regarding the royals? Gosh that sounds rather draconian. I hope not many people would agree with you Mrs.

MrsO501 · 18/07/2015 11:09

The Daily Mail aka The Daily Fascist is just as bad.

GeorgeYeatsAutomaticWriter · 18/07/2015 11:11

Oooh Mrs0501 is not impressed. Go stand in a corner, all of you republican gossipers.

MrsO501 · 18/07/2015 11:13

Naughty step actually please republicans!!!

penguinsaresmall · 18/07/2015 11:15

Yanbu - would be more than happy to see The Sun disappear. But then I would be equally happy to see the royal family disappear. Hmmm.

LaVolcan · 18/07/2015 11:17

“No one at that time had any sense how it would evolve. To imply anything else is misleading and dishonest."

I think the Palace spokesman is being disingenuous. Perceptive people at the time knew exactly what Hitler was planning, but it sounded so appalling that others were loathe to believe what they were saying.
