To ask everyone to eat less meat and meat products?

There are 3 reasons I eat a plant-exclusive diet:

  1. I feel I'm healthier (I became veggie to avoid BSE - and my osteoarthritis has been stopped in its tracks since I went vegan)
  2. Animal welfare issues (I went vegan after looking at the inevitable cruelty involved in the meat and dairy industries)
  3. Global warming/climate change (the single most important thing anyone can do to fight GW is to go vegan - the world's livestock industry contributes more to GW than does transport!)

Before global warming reared its ugly head, I was quite reticent about my veganism, only talking about it when I was asked. But now that our children's and our grandchildren's future is threatened, I'm a lot more vocal.

And now there's me and the Pope on the same side - who'dda thunk it?

Well that's nice for you.

YABU

Mulligrubs · 17/07/2015 21:46

Good for you. YABU.

Boobsofsteel · 17/07/2015 21:46

No. Thanks though.

ExitStageLeft · 17/07/2015 21:47

But what will become of my Meat Monday's?

Sirzy · 17/07/2015 21:47

Yabu. Just because that is the lifestyle you chose doesn't mean everyone else wants the same lifestyle

1Morewineplease · 17/07/2015 21:49

I'm off to suck on a root!!!!

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 17/07/2015 21:49

YABU

I shall continue to support my local butchers

trufflehunterthebadger · 17/07/2015 21:49

YABU solely based on your "who'dda thunk it?". [shudder]

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 17/07/2015 21:49

YABU. It's like a religion, isn't it?

You choose what you believe, don't try to convert everyone else.
You choose what to eat, don't try to convert everyone else.

How long have you been vegan for?

To ask everyone to eat less meat and meat products?
lunalelle · 17/07/2015 21:50

I'm also vegan, but I don't think anyone else should be unless they want to.

ShipShapeAhoy · 17/07/2015 21:51

I agree we should all consume less animal products.

sconequeen · 17/07/2015 21:52

YANBU.

I agree entirely with the three reasons you have given. And I have another reason: meat production is a very inefficient way of producing food. If less grain etc went in to rearing livestock for meat, there would be more available to feed people. (Yes, I know that there are other geographic and political reasons causing hunger too, but reducing the consumption of meat would be an important first step.)

I have been a reticent vegetarian for forty years. Sometimes I think we need to speak out more.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 17/07/2015 21:53

YANBU to ask. YWBVVVU if you got stroppy because people refuse.

Lozy79 · 17/07/2015 21:54

Yanbu. All those points are very real and valid and I commend you for doing. I wish we all could be vegan but sadly it won't happen! People like meat too much and I do include myself in that category, but I am trying!

springbabydays · 17/07/2015 21:55

YANBU.

The responses on this thread so far are why this planet is sleepwalking into a point of no return. The greedy, consumerist and ignorant attitude seen here is depressing.

If everyone made a small change and just cut down on meat a little bit it would make a big difference. But people are too selfish. I really despair!

Esmesgirls · 17/07/2015 21:55

YABU. If we are all vegans, then we don't milk the animals; there will be a milky explosion within which will cause endless traffic and flooding worldwide. Besides, what would mumsnet have to judge if Greggs didn't sell sausage rolls? A couscous roll?

sausagechops101 · 17/07/2015 21:55

Yanbu at all.

FarFromAnyRoad · 17/07/2015 21:56

I don't much like meat actually and rarely eat it. I'd sooner lie down and die than face a life without cheese or butter.

Nargles · 17/07/2015 21:56

I agree but threads like this are counter productive, all it does is make people defensive and aggressive.

springbabydays · 17/07/2015 21:56

Cross post with a few who do get it. Hurrah!
