To think MN is getting nastier?

So far this week we've had giving birth referred to as 'calving' (in the context of women having children while young). Someone loved that one so much they immediately commented on what a great expression it was and repeated it.

We've had someone propose that Prince Phillip should be 'humanely destroyed'. swiftly followed up by a similar suggestion about taking him out to a barn or a shed or some such and shooting him.

We've had a thread about the death of a convicted murdered where several posters queued up to tell us they were, smiling or "laughing gleefully" or simply to post "lol" as a one word comment. (Okay she was a vicious killer and will not be much missed, but really?)

Add to all of that the Budget threads where in the midst of people worrying and calculating the cut to their household budget, other people came to gloat and make helpful observations such as "If you can't afford DC, don't have them."

MN didn't used to be nasty. Vigorous, challenging etc; But not nasty.

What's going on around here?

Oh lottie :(
I love hearing about wilf and bumbledog.

Daisywellies · 21/07/2015 12:43

Maybe I don't lurk on here enough, but I definitely haven't seen anyone with LaQueen's very distinctive style. Any hints as to her username?

TopsyManhole · 21/07/2015 12:50

I've been on MN for about a decade and there is absolutely no doubt that it's nastier than it was ten years ago.

I've met quite a few people from Mn too, and I totally get why that is! I would never ever go to a meet up now, I value my mental health too much Shock

I've only been on here about 5 years but there were always some nasty, vindictive types who seemed to think that making rude, cutting remarks or telling people to fuck off was witty and humorous. As I said earlier, bellends like that probably drove away some of the genuinely witty and imaginative posters who gave AIBU a bit of Fizz and Fun.

YouTheCat · 21/07/2015 12:57

I went to a forum meet up for another parenting forum and half of the people were lovely. The rest were twats.

I don't really like formal meet type things.

MitzyLeFrouf · 21/07/2015 13:02

Imagine going to a MN meetup with everyone wearing a badge displaying their username. Would be like a bar brawl scene from a cowboy film.

'Oh so you're the person who called me a twat on a parking thread'

YOU WANNA PIECE OF ME BEEATCH?

YouTheCat · 21/07/2015 13:03

That would make it much better. Grin

Bambambini · 21/07/2015 13:11

Can't think of anything worse than the meet ups. i might turn up and just lurk, pretending I'm a random punter of the street though.

Mintyy · 21/07/2015 13:12

Just a warning to say that if people keep discussing a certain controversial poster who has namechanged then the whole thread is going to get deleted!

I also think its very off to ask for pms asking for her new name.

I couldn't agree more.

Mintyy · 21/07/2015 13:13

Mitzy
I went to a Mumsnet meetup where everyone wore their username badges and it was absolutely lovely. Had a great time!

YouTheCat · 21/07/2015 13:15

It'd be a pity to have the thread deleted so close to 1000.

Mintyy · 21/07/2015 13:15

But it is very indicative of the changes on the site (swathes of oldies gone, mainly, after Penis Beaker) that there was no big Christmas meetup last year. I think that speaks volumes.

Agree Mintty. I met you once.

I've been to a few now. I've never had a badge but at the last one the lovely HeartsAndDiamonds was ready for people like me with a variety of stickers and a Sharpie.

She works in a school so she'd be good at that sort of thing.

Daisywellies · 21/07/2015 13:19

I also think its very off to ask for pms asking for her new name.

Why? I made it very clear I liked LaQueen and her posting style. When someone said they thought they'd spotted her style and she was probably still on MN I was pleased asked them if they'd PM me - if it wasn't breaking any news - with the name of the poster they thought might possibly be her.

MitzyLeFrouf · 21/07/2015 13:20

Well I'm glad the meetups tend to be fun and I'm only slightly disappointed there don't tend to be any dust-ups.

TiggyD · 21/07/2015 13:21

I've been to a meet up with another site and found it fun, but i already knew a few people. Not sure i'd fit in due to the whole 'having a winkie' business. Would put a lot of people off.

Mintyy · 21/07/2015 13:21

Because Daisy, she might not want you to know her username! It's obvious.

If she's lurking on this thread perhaps she'll let you know herself.

Daisywellies · 21/07/2015 13:22

But I wasn't speaking to anyone who knew it was her. Someone said they'd spotted a style like her's and I just asked who?

Anyhow, it's not worth having an argument over.

BIWI · 21/07/2015 13:23

Because - presumably - she changed her name to preserve her anonymity? Not have it given away by others.

Pagwatch · 21/07/2015 13:25

I've been to two meet ups in the decade or so I have been here.

People do wear their usernames but tbh I imagine it means less and less as so few people hang on to their names for long.

Most people were lovely. It takes a bit of getting used to if you have a strong image of a poster. Getorf always felt like a sort of peer from her on line presence but there she was looking like my sons slightly older girlfriend.

BIWI · 21/07/2015 13:27

... only about 3 feet taller

Daisywellies · 21/07/2015 13:28

In fairness, I suspect very few people would behave as rudely or aggressively in real life as some of the nastier posters do on here.

Pagwatch · 21/07/2015 13:32

Yes BIWI.
