To think MN is getting nastier?

So far this week we've had giving birth referred to as 'calving' (in the context of women having children while young). Someone loved that one so much they immediately commented on what a great expression it was and repeated it.

We've had someone propose that Prince Phillip should be 'humanely destroyed'. swiftly followed up by a similar suggestion about taking him out to a barn or a shed or some such and shooting him.

We've had a thread about the death of a convicted murdered where several posters queued up to tell us they were, smiling or "laughing gleefully" or simply to post "lol" as a one word comment. (Okay she was a vicious killer and will not be much missed, but really?)

Add to all of that the Budget threads where in the midst of people worrying and calculating the cut to their household budget, other people came to gloat and make helpful observations such as "If you can't afford DC, don't have them."

MN didn't used to be nasty. Vigorous, challenging etc; But not nasty.

What's going on around here?

I must admit usual, I'd have felt able to say so if I was.

We could have torn shreds off one another perfectly civilly, I am sure Grin

Passmethecrisps · 20/07/2015 22:17

I only read the first three posts of the waitrose thread and I knew how it would go.

I find some aspects of MN nicer than when I joined and others harsher. I remember there being lots of posters who made it their mission to have a mega-pop at people who formula fed. There was one thread where a poster went as far as to say that unless you had no breasts you were lying about not being able to bf.

The reality is it was likely to be one or two threads and one or two posters but it was awful.

My bug bear is the repetition of 'it's just words on a screen'. Personally I think this is a stinking attitude taken by those who know really that they are saying things which are making people upset.

We don't say that to kids who are being bullied online surely?

I'll be sorry of LaQueen has left or been banned, because I've just seen her ideal job advertised in my sidebar.

I feel a bit sorry for her if thats what she had to do to be honest.

I dont really want to imagine how her real life is Sad

DoeEyedNear · 20/07/2015 23:01

I'll never understand people who fabricate a whole other existence for themselves

I get changing the odd detail here and there (home town, dc gender

DoeEyedNear · 20/07/2015 23:02

Bloody phone

I get people change identifiable details but will never understand creating a whole new persona

usualsuspect333 · 20/07/2015 23:04

You can be whoever you want on the internet.

YouTheCat · 20/07/2015 23:06

But Usual, if you can be whoever you want to be on the internet, how come some people choose to be such utter tits? Grin

DoeEyedNear · 20/07/2015 23:06

Very true. But when it falls down like a stack of cards the fall out is often horrendous for all concerned

Does it really matter in the whole scheme of things?
Im me due to quite liking my life and dont need and imaginary one. I dont get invested in anything on here and give my honest opinion when posting and stand my ground on what I care to at the time. Some people do and its sad how lonely or troubled they must be.

The meaner the poster the more troubled they are.

YouTheCat · 20/07/2015 23:13

Oooh that sounds interesting. It's the sort of thing one of my English teachers would have done if we'd had the internet 28 years ago when I was at school. Grin

BitOfFun · 20/07/2015 23:13

And how did it turn out, Ego?

BitOfFun · 20/07/2015 23:15

I remember seeing a web tool linked on here that would attempt to analyse speech patterns and tell you if the poster was male or female. I'll see if I can find it, it was quite interesting.

But Baddz why is it so important that she is told succinctly on an internet forum that a size 22 is big?

I was a size 28 Am now a 14 Overweight ppl are aware they are overweight .

There seems to be a real hatred of overweight people on here.

Ditto social housing tenants. Someone who is both will get the goady fuckers practically having orgasms as they type im sure.

Garlick · 20/07/2015 23:16

Her real life is absolutely fine - quite nice, really. But it's not the life we all became so very familiar with on here. I have a mortal fear these days of people who construct elaborate fantasies around themselves, with good reason I think. It's a completely different order of re-invention from glossing over a few glitches or altering a few details to maintain anonymity. Even so, I'd have found it harmless had it not been accompanied by quite so much flag-waving, hurt feelings and ferociously defensive fans.

Before anyone asks, LaQ [RIP] once posted a very identifiable trufact - some fleeting breakthrough error, I imagine, and the post disappeared soon after. It made the real life easy to discover. I've kept quiet about it for ages - and stayed off her threads - but am quite fed up with these discussions still continuing, along with the fierce defenders.

And, no, I'm not telling. I am very good at deliberately forgetting stuff, which I'm going to do as soon as I've hit Post.

Why would you really care? thats a bit meh too. So what? so what if they were male or female, so what if they were trolling? surely you'd just say your piece and that would be the end of it. Why on earth would you go to so much trouble to "find out".

Now that's strange really.

BitOfFun · 20/07/2015 23:18

OK, somewhat off-topic, but entertaining enough.

Too invested and too much time on your hands then Ego.

Bloody strange behaviour.

usualsuspect333 · 20/07/2015 23:23

using a web tool is serious troll hunting.
