To think MN is getting nastier?

So far this week we've had giving birth referred to as 'calving' (in the context of women having children while young). Someone loved that one so much they immediately commented on what a great expression it was and repeated it.

We've had someone propose that Prince Phillip should be 'humanely destroyed'. swiftly followed up by a similar suggestion about taking him out to a barn or a shed or some such and shooting him.

We've had a thread about the death of a convicted murdered where several posters queued up to tell us they were, smiling or "laughing gleefully" or simply to post "lol" as a one word comment. (Okay she was a vicious killer and will not be much missed, but really?)

Add to all of that the Budget threads where in the midst of people worrying and calculating the cut to their household budget, other people came to gloat and make helpful observations such as "If you can't afford DC, don't have them."

MN didn't used to be nasty. Vigorous, challenging etc; But not nasty.

What's going on around here?

Can someone kindly explain what the 'Calving' thread was about in a nutshell? I'm intrigued (not for melodious reasons of course).

YouTheCat · 20/07/2015 23:24

Do you get a badge and a hat?

Some posters forget it's a very small world when they are posting and fabricating identifiable factors about their lives.

Indeed. The name changing function is very useful.

Madredear · 20/07/2015 23:28

What was the calving thread about?

DonkeyOaty · 20/07/2015 23:29

Wait. What? A web tool to analyse posts on here?! Crikey moses. I seriously could not be arsed but kinda admire your tenacity, EgoSum. Props.

Garlick · 20/07/2015 23:30

God, no, I'm hugely envious of forensic linguist types who can always identify posters from their writing style! I'd love a gizmo that could imbue me with this magical power!

Unfortunately, that tool isn't it Grin It usually says I'm male but today, apparently, I'm "weak female". Huh.

usualsuspect333 · 20/07/2015 23:30

It was about the popular gang at school.

It was a bloody awful thread.

BitOfFun · 20/07/2015 23:34

I can't endorse it as a troll-hunting aid Grin. I was just put in mind of it, with the talk of analysing the way people write.

Too invested and too much time on your hands then Ego.

Bloody strange behaviour.

Ah, see I think that's unfair. It's no worse than doing sudoku or something. I can't say I've gone on a good trollhunt for years really, but I've had a dig about Advanced Search in the past to satisfy my curiosity about particular suspicions, and it's as good a way as any to spend an idle moment. As long as you don't go all Friends Phoebe and threaten to BLOW THIS SHIT WIDE OPEN Grin.

YouTheCat · 20/07/2015 23:42

I do like that advanced search option - though I'd never bring anything I found using it up on a thread. It just satisfies my curiosity.

ilovesooty · 20/07/2015 23:45

You don't necessarily need a Web tool to spot some reoccurring goady posters.

Absolutely Ego

MaggieJoyBlunt · 21/07/2015 06:14

Yeah...that waitrose thread escalated didn't it??
But I think that's indicative of how timid we have become as a society at criticising obesity

"Internet 'criticism' shaming as a force for social change: A practical guide"

Go on Baddz write it. It could be applied to so many things and then we could all legitimately sit around here telling each other how shit we all are all day before retreating into our LQ-personas of sparkle and swish.

I think I'll be a many-catted lady novelist from 1926 when the shit-storm of helpful criticism starts, though.

Madre

It was about what happened to the 'popular' girls at school.

For many posters or in many schools apparently 'popular' is a euphemism for 'bullies' (or so it would seem from the thread).

Cue much FB-aided schadenfreude about the dull or unpleasant things that had happened to these bullies/popular girls since school.

And then someone said something along the lines of "they took menial jobs, calved early..."

OP posts:
Madredear · 21/07/2015 07:12

Lol, calved early? Who does that woman think she is

Bambambini · 21/07/2015 07:23

Surely LeQueen already outed herself - she had photos of her and her husband on her profile and was very open. She could be controversial but no, it's not great if a bit of silly banter on a chat forum can get that nasty and cause distress for folk. I remember that thread about her husband, didn't realise it had all went major pete tong.

MaggieJoyBlunt · 21/07/2015 07:30

Lol, calved early? Who does that woman think she is

It took me aback. I really hope she has a partial excuse such as having grown up on a farm Wink

Isn't it the multiple alter egos that are continuing to annoy people? I might have misunderstood, but I thought that was it.

BitOfFun · 21/07/2015 08:38

This is how rumours start. It's probably best not to speculate while the person can't openly defend themselves. From what I remember, she said something stupid that made her husband look dishonest and panicked when someone said it should be reported, so got all her posts deleted. It wasn't anything terribly dramatic, probably a daft exaggeration, and I'm sure she walks among us to this day, albeit having to sit on her hands when a Farrow and Ball thread starts.

fishboneschokus · 21/07/2015 08:43

I would have read 'calved' as imitation Mitford speak.

Pagwatch · 21/07/2015 08:47

I always think F&B looks best if you pair it with a strong gloss on the woodwork and use the sort of soft tone that you get in upmarket eateries like harvester

MaggieJoyBlunt · 21/07/2015 08:51

Oh I think there are plenty of LQ defenders around Bit Smile
