Steve Wright? Serious Jockin' ???

I've not posted here before but Steve Wright is driving me absolutely bonkers with his 'serious Jockin''. His regular programme is bad enough but now we are subjected to mentions every bloomin' day about his bloomin' Friday programme. Is this really the best the BBC can do for the Licence payer during prime-time listening?

dreaming - I can't bear Steve Wright, he just talks over every. single. bloody. song!

He's been doing that since the 80's!! I used to come home from school and listen to his show and sometimes try and record a few tracks onto a cassette (yes, i'm that old) and my god if he talked over the intro to soooo many. Grrrrrrr.

dreamingofblueskies · 16/07/2015 17:52

Eponas I'm that old too! I remember sitting there listening to Bruno Brookes on the Top 40 with my tape on rec/pause. Grin

Heliotrope33 · 17/07/2015 14:26

Oh gawd. How many more mentions of bloomin' serious 'jockin' before it evens starts. Helllllpppppp. I can't get away from it as Radio 2 is always on here at work......

I hate Steve Wright. Way way too fond of the sound of his own voice and not interested enough in the songs to let them be the star of his show and just talks over them. Luckily he's on when I'm at work. I like Pick of the Pops! Sunday radio 2 is dire.

FurtherSupport · 17/07/2015 15:33

I haven't listened in a while, is he still essentially doing the same show he did on R1 in the 1980s, which wasn't funny then ?

Heliotrope33 · 17/07/2015 15:54

Yes, FurtherSupport. Although it seems to have taken a recent dive to depths not previously reached. His 'factoids' are also nauseating, given the false laughter they seem to attract from Steve's posse.

OP posts:
2rebecca · 17/07/2015 17:45

I don't like the posse either. Prefer DJs like Johnnie Walker who just play the music and talk about it although he got a bit religious and the music less interesting as he got older.
Terry Wogan's breakfast gang were OK, except irritating giggly Fran. Chris Evans is just too bouncy for first thing on a morning.
My favourite radio show is radio Scotland's Get it On with Bryan Burnett. Themed requests I can listen to on the way home, or could until they extended the news so it now starts later.

GeekyQueen · 17/07/2015 17:50

Ugh, it makes me cringe. I wasn't sure if I was just getting old or something but alas, I have found my people.

EponasWildDaughter · 17/07/2015 18:33

Oh lord does he still have a 'posse' then?! (another thing i remember from the 80s show)

I have to admit - i did use to laugh like a drain at his 'Twisted Lyrics' bit. Some of them have stayed with me all this time (so much 80s music is played on the radio) and i hear them and still snigger.

dreaming - pause/record ... Yes! It's all flooding back! Grin

Nevercallmehun · 17/07/2015 18:36

I can't stand him. I now turn off just after the news hopefully before he says 'ta' in that annoying, smug way when taking over from Jeremy Vine.

I hate 'serious jockin'' and the way he has Sports Guy and Old Woman as minions who are too unimportant to have names. I love it so much when someone stands in for him.

Heliotrope33 · 17/07/2015 19:39

He is just sooooo patronising. And some of those interviews with big names are just cringeworthy with that soppy Tim Smith smugly oohing, ahhhing and cackling n the background. It is all so 1980s.. Get a grip BBC and replace him a.s.a.p.

So glad to read this thread. I thought it was just me who felt like this. I use the off switch when he comes on.

fancyanotherfez · 17/07/2015 21:43

Old Woman and that other fake character he sometimes has on. What the hell is the point of them? Get someone who may be an old woman to Witter on about inane nonsense? Gaah! Tell me something else I can listen to!

siilk · 17/07/2015 22:10

Drives me nuts too. I have to turn it off!

Sunny67 · 17/07/2015 22:13

I used to quite like him but drives me loopy now. I like Chris Evans and Simon Mayo. I used to love Chris Moyles on radio 1 but after he went I switched to 2, couldn't do with a lot of the music. I'm 48 but find so much of radio 2 music is too old for me. Grin I think we could do with a radio 1 1/2 GrinGrin

OhWotIsItThisTime · 17/07/2015 22:29

I fucking hate Steve Wright. I usually love radio 6, but cannot stand that dipshit in the morning who thinks he's funny.

SaulGood · 20/07/2015 11:57

Ken's just announced that Paddy's standing in for Steve today as he's buggered off on holiday. I may or may not have punched the air.

fancyanotherfez · 20/07/2015 20:16

Apparently it was only for one day :-( . I love it when Paddy and Richard Madeley stand in. They are funnier/ cleverer although to be fair, that's not difficult...

sashh · 20/07/2015 21:17

Good grief is he still going?

He has made me smile precisely once in the 1980s when he was doing a hand over to or from DLT and they were amusing themselves by doing a 'smashy and niceey' impression.

I mean it was quite sad that they didn't realise.

Smarterthantheaveragebeaver · 20/07/2015 21:30

I listened to about 45 seconds of Serious jockin on Friday. I had to switch off. It gave me the same stabby rage I used to get when the dreadful Sarah Kennedy was on in the mornings.

pictish · 20/07/2015 21:40

I wondered wtf this 'serious jockin' was all about seeing as he infuriatingly brought it up in every sentence he uttered for an hour. Turns out it's just requests for people's favourite songs. Hmm

The most aggravating bunch of arse I've heard in a while.

I quite like Ken Bruce, even if his tunes are awful. Love Paul O'Grady...just like his manner. He's a funny guy.

GoringBit · 20/07/2015 21:40

I can't stand him. I now turn off just after the news hopefully before he says 'ta' in that annoying, smug way when taking over from Jeremy Vine.

Oh yes to this, it drives me crackers, also the constant references to the big show, the singing badly over the end of songs... wanker. He was a wanker in the 80s and hasn't remotely improved with age. How is he still in his job? He must know where a lot of bodies are buried.

shadowfax07 · 20/07/2015 21:43

I have a theory that Steve Wright is only there to make some of the others sound good. Grin

My tablet thinks that SW's surname is actually Weight, rather apposite, I thought.

scarlets · 20/07/2015 21:45

I liked his show in the 1980s with Mr Angry and Mr Mad etc. I agree that it was impossible to tape the songs though lol. I still have some old cassettes, and on one of them, SW is listing some of the UK's naturist beaches over Peter Cetera's "Glory of Love" , a song for which I had been waiting an hour!

pictish · 20/07/2015 21:50

Never mind...Glory of Love is surely one of the worst songs ever released. Grin
