... take it you mean financial and career success by this.
No. For me success is being contented with my family and my life. Having sufficient resources to feed and clothe my family. Having no worry that I will not be able to secure those same resources in the future, and not being in fear that some tyranny might remove theose resources if they choose to. Life, liberty, freedom and security.
We pay taxes so that the government protects us from tyranny and honours our rights to possess what we earn, except I have learned that that is not the case, so I pay taxed to maintain my freedom, but do not trust that the government will not remove food and water from my family at some, point in the future if they see fit to do so.
As we post, it appears some are saying the government is doing that very thing to them. Heed the warning. They may do that to you. Yes, I have to forgo holidays, television, mobile phones, car travel, and many of the conveniences people take to be essential to life, but if you live on a pittance given to you by a government you cannot trust, is it not sensible to change your lifestyle and remove their ability to harm you, even a little if you can?
Now I know the disabled issue will be rolled out again, and clearly as I have posted exhaustively I acknowledge that there are those whom advice like this does not apply to. The system was designed for your needs and it has failed you. But for the majority of people, dependency on the system is avoidable if it is recognised early enough, and recoverable if it stepped into. There is no magic bullet. It takes time and effort.
For me, I prefer to live a small life with little luxury and a lot of mobility if I need it. Yes, I don't have a car, but I can get one tomorrow if I need one. That said, a £1000 car is a few months of food, or a years savings in my life. But I'd rather have the security blanket and not need to use it, than have squandered it on television, telephones, or a week in the Med'.
