A decent budget for low paid workers.

Sickoffrozen · 08/07/2015 14:16

Aibu to think that overall the budget was good news for the low paid with a big increase in minimum wages announced?

Seems like a decent idea to me.

But I stand to be corrected.....

The left never do themselves any favours on threads like this. I know a lot of people are upset they may have to lose money or take on more hours of work but this is what the country wants and there are a good few mumsnetters who do support the Government's changes. People can feel upset or cross about them of course and I hope all of us treat others with sympathy and politeness no matter how heated the debate.

Most regulars know Dawns circumstances. But Dawn you are not the only one with challenges and difficult lives. It's not a competition to decide who has the worst circumstances. It really isn't....

Dawndonnaagain · 12/07/2015 19:47

God, it's another pile in on Dawndonna thread. Hillingdon I'm pretty certain it's not your intention, but I do feel bullied by you, on a fairly consistent basis.
I am aware, as I've said before that it isn't a competition. I'm not stupid. I am on occasion fragile. There's a huge difference.

JodieMacdonald31 · 12/07/2015 19:53

I noticed further up the thread some1 mentioned something about if some1 in ur household gets dla, the cuts don't apply. Is this true? Is this the new cuts or the cap?
I seriously am concerned I will be replaced in the workplace rather than my pay increased Confused

EllieFAntspoo · 12/07/2015 19:58

... take it you mean financial and career success by this.
No. For me success is being contented with my family and my life. Having sufficient resources to feed and clothe my family. Having no worry that I will not be able to secure those same resources in the future, and not being in fear that some tyranny might remove theose resources if they choose to. Life, liberty, freedom and security.

We pay taxes so that the government protects us from tyranny and honours our rights to possess what we earn, except I have learned that that is not the case, so I pay taxed to maintain my freedom, but do not trust that the government will not remove food and water from my family at some, point in the future if they see fit to do so.

As we post, it appears some are saying the government is doing that very thing to them. Heed the warning. They may do that to you. Yes, I have to forgo holidays, television, mobile phones, car travel, and many of the conveniences people take to be essential to life, but if you live on a pittance given to you by a government you cannot trust, is it not sensible to change your lifestyle and remove their ability to harm you, even a little if you can?

Now I know the disabled issue will be rolled out again, and clearly as I have posted exhaustively I acknowledge that there are those whom advice like this does not apply to. The system was designed for your needs and it has failed you. But for the majority of people, dependency on the system is avoidable if it is recognised early enough, and recoverable if it stepped into. There is no magic bullet. It takes time and effort.

For me, I prefer to live a small life with little luxury and a lot of mobility if I need it. Yes, I don't have a car, but I can get one tomorrow if I need one. That said, a £1000 car is a few months of food, or a years savings in my life. But I'd rather have the security blanket and not need to use it, than have squandered it on television, telephones, or a week in the Med'.

Hillingdon · 12/07/2015 20:00

Dawn - we are all fragile. We all have issues in life to deal with. I find your treatment of other posters including me is rude and aggressive. I haven't had a charmed life and neither have many many others.

You might have guessed I am right wing and my kids go to private schools. I am really really not smug and recognise every day (almost!) I have been fortunate but I don't believe it's only luck. Why would I have been luckier than anyone else. I have my health and I suspect we are about the same age. I have made some arrangements should my health fail but its ok so far.

I do think though (your personal circumstances of course separated from this) that where you and I really disagree is 'personal responsibility'.

BettyCatKitten · 12/07/2015 20:00

Charmed I'm sure that the police have bigger fish to fry than someone swearing at you on here!
Also, you patronisingly referred to Dawn as hormonal, very rude.
Pot meet kettle. If you can't stand the heat......

No empathy here. Dawn has just said she feels fragile as she is looking after 3 disabled family members fgs

pinkstrawberries · 12/07/2015 20:07

All success has an element of luck Hillingdon.

TalkinPeace · 12/07/2015 20:15

Elliefants
I welcome the cutting of corporation tax. We don't service an industry that pays less than minimum wage anyways, but I can see that if I ran a small office cleaning business, or a hair salon that depended upon cheap labour, that would be an issue for me. However, paying someone minimum wage is questionable at best. If they aren't worth paying a decent wager to, then maybe you're hiring the wrong person.

Read what you have typed and then remember that the biggest users of workfare and NMW staff are

  • care workers
  • supermarkets like Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda, Morrisons and the like
  • contractors for hospitals and councils

Small business cannot compete with the offshoring plcs - especially when their wages bill has been put up by 11%

And yes, I run a business. A perfectly legal piece of tax planning has been destroyed with no proper thought or consultation.
THe CT change will have no impact on partnerships by the way.

Dawndonnaagain · 12/07/2015 20:18

Dawn - we are all fragile. Thanks for that.

and my kids go to private schools.

At some points, all three of mine were in the independent sector.
So, where is your left wing portrayal of me now?

YouTheCat · 12/07/2015 20:29

Oh ffs! So Charmed is going to run and tell. I'm soooo scared.

Charmed, the reason I cannot afford to just top my 20 year old son up with £30 a week is because I have had to work in low paid, term time only jobs throughout his life. There has been no opportunity for training. There's been no chance of career progression.

Many people find themselves in my position after 20 years of looking after someone with additional needs.

charmed86 · 12/07/2015 20:31

Betty

Must of us here are hormonal as many of us are parents, disproportionately new parents (as they are the ones most likely to seek help over the net). Hormones are nothing new to most of us and we know how they impact our mood and responses. The Police will have bigger fish to fry, I doubt they will charge round her house and break down her door. That doesn't mean you shouldn't report lesser crimes.

Marchlikeanant

I wasn't the one being rude. You are very childish for swearing like that. Are you really a parent? It doesn't make you big or clever, most people will read your contribution and judge you as rude and probably lacking in intellect.

Dawn

I am sorry to read of your circumstance and I wish you well. This isnt a pile on dawn thread, you started being abusive.

I hope that we can stop derailing this thread now. done is done

amazinggrace2001 · 12/07/2015 20:37

Just leave Dawndonaagain alone. Charmed86 your pm to her was patronising and belittling - hormones indeed! You are not on the right forum if you cannot handle robust debate (which may include swearing). If you write goady smug posts then you can only expect a few words your way.

IonaMumsnet · 12/07/2015 20:38

Evening all. Gosh. This escalated quickly didn't it? Generally, we like to not involve the Actual Police where possible here. We do have a rather nifty Report function, however, which can be accessed by clicking the 'report' button above any post that you would like to make us aware of, so please do make free with this. For anyone who isn't aware of them, here's a copy of our Talk Guidelines so you can see what we do and don't consider to be acceptable at Mumsnet. Guidelines
In the meantime, how about a bit of peace and love instead to end this rather lovely weekend? Thank you!

YouTheCat · 12/07/2015 20:40

Yes, a few words ending in 'off'.

Dawndonnaagain · 12/07/2015 20:41

The problem is charmed that my social mores are not yours, I swear. As I've stated before, my intellect is pretty damned good. I also come from a long line of a)really rather well known folk, and b) am the Granddaughter of a Lord on both sides. I perceive people that use the arguments that you have chosen to use; big, clever, rude, lacking in intellect as seriously lacking in intellect, but I wouldn't want to out your lower middle class roots on here.

MarchLikeAnAnt · 12/07/2015 20:44

Better to be childish and lacking intellect than a heartless nincompoop like you charmed

amazinggrace2001 · 12/07/2015 20:45

Love it Dawndonnaagain! Yes charmed86 has made the mistake that having money and not claiming any benefits makes her more intelligent!

YouTheCat · 12/07/2015 20:46

Are you seriously saying that people who swear lack intellect?

That's Stephen Hawkins fucked then.
