AIBU not to pay her for a party she threw

Last week I was visiting a friend and she had been invited to a party by a new friend of hers. I had previously met this friend but don't know her particularly well ikywim. Anyways, since my friend had only recently met this woman, she asked me to go as her plus one and so I went along with her. The party was quite dull and the woman throwing it was a bit off with my friend and rather rude towards me so we left after an hour or so.

We didn't have anything to eat (she had laid out crisps and the like) and brought a bottle of (rather expensive) wine each aswell as flowers.

This morning I received a text from party woman demanding £5 to cover the cost of the food she laid out. Now there were at least 60 people in attendance and there is no way she spent £300 on food.

AIBU to not pay her as I didn't eat any of the food and already gave her flowers and wine?

i think MrsK nailed it!

pollyisnotputtingthekettleon · 06/07/2015 21:20

Wow what has your friend said/done?

hibbledibble · 06/07/2015 21:20

Yanbu. That is some brass neck.

It is never ok to charge someone to attend a party at your house.

Luckyfellow · 06/07/2015 21:20

How did she get your mobile number?

PHANTOMnamechanger · 06/07/2015 21:20

why did you even give her your number?

did she hire a hall or something and is trying to recover the costs (not that that makes it ok I am just clutching at straws)

was there no +1 and she thinks you are rude turning up??

did the other guests all bring flowers/wine or something - she could open a florists if so!

Aeroflotgirl · 06/07/2015 21:21

Don't pay, the Rhinohide of some people is disgusting.

prepperpig · 06/07/2015 21:22

"Dear friend of friend

Thank you for your text. Could I suggest it will be easier if we deal with the payments all at once? The cost of the wine and flowers I purchased for the party was £16.49 I have deducted from this the £5 food fee for your party. As a result I'm happy for you to transfer the £11.49 into my paypal account the details of which are xxxx. Tomorrow is fine though, no rush to do it tonight.

Thanks so much"

TendonQueen · 06/07/2015 21:22

Text back: 'lol, those crisps must have been really expensive!'

PrincessOfThemyscira · 06/07/2015 21:27

I think the most appropriate response is
"Are you on glue?"

Noregretsatall · 06/07/2015 21:30

Where is the op? And why does she have your mobile no if you're just 'the friend of a friend'?

paulapompom · 06/07/2015 21:32

Yes to what prepperpig said ^

Flabbergasted!

ememem84 · 06/07/2015 21:34

I'd bill her for the wine.

Or ask for it back.

ememem84 · 06/07/2015 21:34

Cheeky caaaaaaa ????

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 06/07/2015 21:35

Did this really happen?

ememem84 · 06/07/2015 21:35

Oh. The cow doesn't work [cow]

rebbles · 06/07/2015 21:36

Omg that is crazy! How did she ask for the money? I can't believe it!

ahphoque · 06/07/2015 21:39

Grin I'm laughing so much at your responses! I have no intention of paying her, I was speechless when I read her message as I've never known anyone to do that.

I have no idea where she got my number, friend says she didn't give it to her so that's really weird that she went so out of her way to find my number.

My friend didn't get any such text, even though we were pretty much exactly the same at the party in terms of spending/eating. But she thinks I should pay just to avoid future awkwardness Hmm

I'm another one wondering how she got your text number?

Love MrsKoala comment, but some of the others too.

Did you friend get a text and what is she doing about it.

Whatever you text back, I'd also mention her lack of hospitality leading to you both leaving so quickly.

It's BIZARRE! There MUST be something else going on!

I wonder what happened after you left?????

hastily marks thread and hopes for updates

Fatmomma99 · 06/07/2015 21:42

sorry ahphoque, x-post

ahphoque · 06/07/2015 21:43

And yes this really happened, the message is on what's app and I haven't opened it because she would see if I did, I'm pretending I never got the message

DungeonDoGood · 06/07/2015 21:44

OP, please reply! And you must send her the bill for the wine and flowers.

threenotfour · 06/07/2015 21:46

What?? Bizzare. No you don't pay. You delete the message and forget all about her.

However just out of interest how did a women you don't know who was rude to you get your mobile number? Confused

BitOfFun · 06/07/2015 21:46

What's she going to do, take you to the Small Claims Court? Open the message, send her your bill just as prepperpig wrote it, and tell us what she says Grin

Spog · 06/07/2015 21:48

fucking hell.
YANBU.

LilyMayViolet · 06/07/2015 21:48

Your friend thinks you should pay?! Why? It's unbelievably rude!
