Just that. I think they're fantastic sportswomen and every commentary on every game seems to make out that they are the bogey man/woman fighting against the delicate flower on the other side of the net.

i've seen them play at the smaller courts in wimbledon at the start of their career. yes v aggressive but that's not a bad thing in sport.they are just not v pleasant personalities.some of the players are v engaging and smiley, friendly.the sisters are not like that.

TheWordFactory · 02/07/2015 13:50

I heard Serenading interviewed this morning saying nice things about Graham.

Very polite when she knows she's going to whip her ass in straight sets

areyoubeingserviced · 02/07/2015 13:50

Stare- Don't confuse strong with unpleasant

stareatthetvscreen Own what you are saying. Or is it that you are aware that your true opinion would get you deleted? Attitudes like yours make me very happy that the Williams sisters do not ever give one single shiny shit.

stareatthetvscreen · 02/07/2015 13:54

i'm not areyoubeingserviced :)

Eminado · 02/07/2015 13:55

Stare - they are there to play tennis. Whivh they do well. Why do they have to be engaging and smiley? To strangers? Confused

Goshthatsspicy · 02/07/2015 13:57

The sisters have very different personalities. Serena wasn't just 'rude and sweary' she threatened a line judge.
You can find it on line (obviously)
Agrressive and intimidating would be more apt.
I was sad to see it. At the start of her career, it wasn't the case.

bikeandrun · 02/07/2015 13:57

In my sport fell running a couple of the top women have been criticized for supposedly looking manly, ie short hair, flat chested, muscular bodies, that's not manly its just a different female body type. They are confident women and they don't have to hid their muscles, grew their hair or wear a padded bra to prove it. To suggest the Williams sisters are really men is outrageous they are beautiful strong black women and if others cant cope with that that's their problem.

Hmm
CrystalHaze · 02/07/2015 13:59

(How did that odd semi-bolding happen?!)

what? for goodness sake

Coffee1234 · 02/07/2015 14:03

I wouldn't care about a bit of swearing, or even a lot. And I agree that they're fantastic athletes. But, as I said earlier, Serena's rant at the lines woman (threatening to kill her, and the "If I could, I'd take this fucking ball and ram it down your fucking throat") takes it beyond passion and into bullying, IMO. I'd think the same if she was a man or if she was white. Venus seems much nicer.

bikeandrun · 02/07/2015 14:04

I don't like F1 but Lewis Hamilton is obviously a bit good at it and think the way he is reported about in the press is incredibly racist, rich, handsome, successful black with a beautiful white girlfriend seems to make a few people a bit uncomfortable!

derxa · 02/07/2015 14:06

Goshthatsspicy Many sportspeople are rude and aggressive and I'm sure she did that but that's the point. Why do black women athletes have to be extra nice or even nice at all?

I read a really good article about this recently.

mediadiversified.org/2015/06/08/loveserenahateracism-a-discourse-on-western-attitudes-towards-serena-williams/

I don't really follow the tennis and didn't know much about her. That article was quite an eye opener for me.

we'll have to agree to differ then beenwondering - my view is based on my past experiences of seeing them play in real life.nothing to do with race in any way.

i'm not a big fan of andy murray either.

i won't be resorting to calling you any names.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 02/07/2015 14:20

I like Venus. There was a comment that Serena allegedly said about a date rape victim (she later apologised and claimed she didn't say it) and that put me off her a lot.

Their story is very interesting and I wonder what would have happened if their dad had decided that he wanted them to be top swimmers / dancers / mathematicians.

Goshthatsspicy · 02/07/2015 14:25

derxa
I'm not sure l understand your comparison?
There is nothing thst excuses her threatening physical violence. To a line judge? That isn't okay. It wouldn't be okay from anyone. Man or woman.
A person that does that, shows their true colours clearly.

CrystalCove · 02/07/2015 14:29

beenwondering

I find your posts much more offensive than anything stareatthescreen has written - of which I see nothing wrong. Is it not possible to dislike someone without their colour being brought into it? You want the poster shot? Shock

derxa · 02/07/2015 14:31

Very interesting read ShipShapeAhoy

SoupDragon · 02/07/2015 14:33

I don't doubt that they have experienced racism but I don't quite understand how describing Serena as scary is racist. I would find her scary because of her strength and competitive aggression when playing. I think their physical superiority does often make their opponent look like a delicate flower, nothing to do with race.

They're wonderful to watch and I'm not much of a tennis fan.

CassieBearRawr · 02/07/2015 14:35

Crystal - stare's posts veer very closely to racism whether she knows it or not. She should think why she expects a tennis player - or any sports star - to display friendly, non-threatening mannerisms to appease her.

stareatthetvscreen · 02/07/2015 14:39

i don't cassie -it was just just an observation made.
