To not have taken a handbag!

I attended a training course, during this the trainer asked everyone to pick up their handbags (moving and handling course) and started giving the men bags! I said can I have one too, as I didn't take a handbag with me! The trainer asked but where do you keep all your womans stuff?? I laughed as I thought it was a joke, but he was serious and I mumbled something about having pockets! AIBU not to take handbags where ever I go? What womans stuff do I need? I obviously do use a handbag but not everyday? I was being picked up and dropped off by my partner, lunch was provided, so didn't really need anything. Very relaxed training venue, so was able to wear non work clothes! (If that makes a difference)

"moving and handling course" Confused

They train you to move and handle things?

CatMilkMan · 28/06/2015 22:28

DP has a section of her handbags sectioned off for my stuff compared to the size of some of her bags it's a tiny space.
All that I know about what she has for her is:
Unlimited supply of tissues
Unlimited supply of chewing gum
Make up stuff
Unlimited lip stuff
Receipts for meals over £35 a person

I never used to have a handbag; I just put my purse & keys in my pockets or just carried them in my hand. Since having children, I've tended to need a bag more. When they were little obviously I had nappies etc so used a bag & I've scaled it down as they've got older. In my bag, I usually have:

purse
keys
glasses
phone
asthma inhalers (mine & ds2's)
a mini bicycle pump!
umbrella
kids' purses/wallets

DelphiniumBlue · 28/06/2015 22:38

Formerbabe, not if everything is in the front pockets of your jeans!

Momagain1 · 28/06/2015 22:41

Once I began carrying a phone, I stopped carrying a handbag for many years. Pirse small enough to fit in my pocket, phone, keys. The phone took the place of calenders and address books and notepads. We lived where we had to drive everywhere then.

Now we live in the city, and walk or use public transport, I have a handbag which is packed, a lot of which used to just stay in my car.
1 or 2 Folding shopping bags
A tiny bag with plasters and sanitizer (I almost always have DS8 with me, things happen)
Another with Sanpro
Sunglasses
A fold up rain jacket (because glasgow)
A phone charger.
A card case with all the loyalty cards except my usual grocery and boots.

i still only carry a handbag if I am spending the day out and about. i can nearly always justify some sort of jacket for which gives me enough pockets for purse, phone, keys, shopping bag most of the time. My DD28 tells me actually using jacket and trouser pockets makes me look lumpy and 'ruins the sihouette' and tells me I should always carry a handbag, and by the way, the one I do carry is ugly and faded and very unfashionable.

Oh well.

CMP69 · 28/06/2015 22:47

I don't have a handbag either, never seen the need.

RueDeWakening · 28/06/2015 22:53

My handbag contains:
Blood test kit (t1 diabetic)
Insulin
Pump inserter
Purse
Tampons
Wine gums (to treat low blood sugar)
Kids snacks
Pens
Various receipts and bits of notepaper
Hair elastics

Phone, keys and some cash live in my pockets though!

TheHouseOnBellSt · 28/06/2015 22:56

YANBU. I never carry one. I keep money in my jeans...that's it. Nobody's picking my jeans pocket..no chance, they're too tight.

LittleMissCalamity · 28/06/2015 23:01

Momagain1 my mum says the same thing, putting stuff in your pocket ruins your siloutte and mishapes your clothes (never listen though)! Gruntfuttock I sometimes have to move heavy objects as part of my job! (I'm a support worker, have to move wardrobes etc when cleaning rooms) rembrandtsrockchick I think you're a spy Grin

Portable phone charger

Sun cream

Sgtmajormummy · 28/06/2015 23:06

I have one of those handbag switch-over inserts with a drawstring and it contains:
Hairbrush
Makeup pouch
Perfume
Pencil case
Notebook (used to be Filofax)
Reading glasses
Sunglasses
Store card holder
Fold-up shopping bag
Tissues
Sanpro
Fisherman's Friends
On top I throw in my purse, phone and water bottle. Keys clip onto the strap. There is usually a sediment of receipts, shopping lists, sweet wrappers and elastic bands.
Any bag also has to be able to carry A4 size documents without creasing.

But I regularly leave the house with just my key in one pocket. Grin

CatMilkMan · 28/06/2015 23:27

Fucking Mary poppins bags.

CatMilkMan · 28/06/2015 23:29

Why no first aid kits? I carry a first aid kit in every bag but ladies seem to carry everything other than a first aid kits.

perfectlybroken · 28/06/2015 23:43

Pre kids I would have a small cross body bag with phone, purse, keys, vaseline. I like to be hands free and have never #cough 37 cough# felt old enough for a handbag. Now, with 2 kids, one a baby, I take a huge cross body bag everywhere.

DonttouchthatLarry · 29/06/2015 00:01

Debit card and/or bank notes in back pocket of jeans, coins in one front pocket, phone in other front pocket - can't stand handbags, only use one at weddings etc.

DocHollywood · 29/06/2015 00:10

I'm 59 and never owned a handbag. I've thought about it once or twice and have occasionally borrowed from the dds if I'm going out for the evening in an outfit with no pockets but have never felt I've needed one on a daily basis. I've either got a jacket or jeans with pockets for keys and money.

ScorpioMermaid · 29/06/2015 00:20

yanbu.

I use my pockets if im on my own or the baby changing bag if not. I do own a small Radley pocket bag and use that if I don't have pockets only to put my phone, money and keys in and a roll of antacids and my maternity notes if I can squish them in Grin I hate bags and purses.
