AIBU to think children using the word fart is vulgar?

DH and I have had a long standing disagreement regarding the DC using the word fart - I won't allow it and he has pointed out to the DC's that it is not a 'bad word but just one that I don't like them using.

AIBU? or is he?

In fact my son's teacher uses the word fuck in class.

Fart is not a rude word.

Saying 'pump' or 'pass gas' or 'did a whoopsie' sounds ridiculously prissy.

I've explained to my DC that some words are swear words and some aren't but they ARE vulgar/crass. I've told them that just like swear words they are not to use vulgar words.

Such as fart and arse.

I didn't know people thought it was vulgar until I came on mumsnet. This thread seems to appear every couple of months. I won't care if my daughter says it but will be more aware that others might not like it

Fart IS a rude word. It sounds coarse.

Last time I read this discussion on MN the consensus seemed to be that it is not a rude word. I remember it as such from growing up though, and would just like to reference the Lion King "not in front of the kids" line - "fart" must have still been considered rude when that film came out!

I don't think fart is rude at all. What else could you say? Pass wind or pump sound very Hyancith Bucket to me - I'd far rather my kids said fart.

I have a 4 month old and DH and I are undecided what to use. Not sure I like little children using fart, but then I know someone who gets her children to call them poppers which makes me want to fall about laughing at its prissiness. My family called them blow offs when I was little and that also doesn't sound quite right to me now. Will be watching this thread for suggestions.

Wouldn't object to it either, I think my kids had a selection of comedy euphemisms ("botty noise", etc.) when they were tiny, then "fart". I think "pump" sounds revolting, much worse than "fart". No, I don't want to think about you actually pumping flatulence out of your anus.

we use fart in our house. in fact dd2 (3) announced to the entire train the other day very loudly she had farted but did say pardon afterwards Grin

It's just a word to describe a bodily function. Why is it any worse than 'fluff' or 'trump' or 'shooting bunnies' or any other ridiculous alternative.

We use far precisely because my mum wouldn't let me say it growing up and it was embarrassing to have to say pump in front of my friends.
It's just a word.

I really struggled with this and similar words when my Dc were small. I'd correct them and they'd say "but teacher/TA says fart/bum/crap Shock "

It's hard to support the school at the same time as telling them the teacher is clueless Grin

There are lots of non-swear words I don't allow, like stupid and idiot. Also offensive words like spazo (sorry) I also don't allow blasphemy, not because I find it offensive but because I think it's important that they know some people are offended.

They're teens now and I'm not naïve enough to think they don't use them and worse, but at least they know not to use them in front of me/their GPs/a prospective MIL/in a job interview. Too many people seem to have no clue when coarse language is or isn't appropriate. Even if you (I) are not offended, we know that some people are, so need to know how to control our own language IYSWIM. And that OMG can offend too.

I don't think 'fart' is swearing and they'll say it once they're secondary school age and I won't mind by then but would expect it not to be in front of teachers, friends'parents, etc. - I don't think it sounds nice when young children say it and mine say 'trump' or 'parp'.

Really? It's up to you of course, but it seems a bit unreasonable to disallow it when there will be far worse they'll be eventually picking up from TV and their classmates.

To a pp I grew up in the US when lion King came out - that line in hakuna Matata is funny but not because anyone thought the word fart was actually rude in the mid - 90s.
