DH and I have had a long standing disagreement regarding the DC using the word fart - I won't allow it and he has pointed out to the DC's that it is not a 'bad word but just one that I don't like them using.

AIBU? or is he?

We call it a jobbie sneeze Shock And THAT'S better than fart? Christ on a crumpet.
Not allowed to say 'bum'?

I've clearly taken a wrong turn and ended up on ShockedAndDisgusted.Net.

keeptothewhiteline · 22/06/2015 12:04

I have no objection to fart.
My son uses the word fuck in conversation with me.

ActiviaYoghurt · 22/06/2015 12:04

We are trumpers here, yanbu

Katiepoes · 22/06/2015 12:04

My five yearold was instructed by her granny to say 'pass wind' as that is what 'ladies' say. Sadly for Nanny we live in a 'ladies' free house, we fart. Sometimes loudly and with relish, seriously why are people so uptight about their own bodies? Pump? FFS.

GhettoFabulous · 22/06/2015 12:05

We said pimp when I was wee, which caused me no end of confusion when watching Starsky and Hutch. Let off was reserved for the eye watering kind.

keeptothewhiteline · 22/06/2015 12:05

Hardly prissy.

FancyAnOlive · 22/06/2015 12:06

Some people don't let their kids say 'bum'?? SRSLY? Hahahahha.

ShatnersBassoon · 22/06/2015 12:07

We say fluff
Wouldn't allow dd to say fart its vulgar

Grin This has really tickled me! Talking about flatus is not vulgar as long as you call it something daft Grin

morelikeguidelines · 22/06/2015 12:08

Yabu . Not worth worrying about in my view.

Sallystyle · 22/06/2015 12:09

My mum agrees with you, which is why we say trump when my mum is here and fart when she isn't.

Biscetti · 22/06/2015 12:09

Fucking hell.

TheNewStatesman · 22/06/2015 12:09

FART FART FART FART FART
BUM BUM BUM BUM BUM

ARSE WILLY TOILET

Sorry, just had to get that out.

TheNewStatesman · 22/06/2015 12:11

Trump sounds much more vulgar than fart to me. Trump makes me think of someone letting out a truly window-rattling one, like an elephant roaring away at the top of its voice.

AnnPerkins · 22/06/2015 12:11

We say fart. I can't stand prissy euphemisms like pop and fuff. And if fart is vulgar so is pump.

Just done some googling. Fart has been in use since the 13th century and wasn't considered vulgar until the 18th century, when used as a personal insult eg 'You old fart'.

Apparently 'fart' was the word for an audible emission of wind, doing a silent one was known as 'fisting' Grin

reallybadidea · 22/06/2015 12:12

I'd hazard a guess that the 'fluff'-ers also instruct their offspring to say 'pardon'...

grumpysquash · 22/06/2015 12:13

My DC had to say 'parp' for several years - which at least sounds like what it is, and not quite as bad as 'fart'. Now they're older, they're allowed to say 'fart' (but not do it in front of the grandparents).
My friend is a paediatrician and English is not her first language. She once remarked how whenever she asked kids to 'pop their bum on there' (meaning the examination table) they would laugh. I had to explain that bum was a marginally rude word and might be hilarious if a doctor said it!
She was Confused, she didn't think anyone said 'bottom', even in England.

LadyMaryofDownton · 22/06/2015 12:13

yanbu - i agree i Hate the word "fart"

I've never really understood why people talk about farts? if someone farts , i/we ignore it. Theres no reason to ask "oh did you fart" "Who did that" etc. It avoids needing any word or substitute.

sparklewater · 22/06/2015 12:13

I actually correct my dd if she says pop-off instead of fart. It's so bloody twee!

A fart is a fart is a fart.

DrElizabethPlimpton · 22/06/2015 12:14

Fart is a perfectly good old word to describe a normal bodily function . I don't like hearing or smelling them - though with a Labrador I don't have much say in the matter - but I find the twee euphemisms used instead of fart, ridiculous.

grumpysquash · 22/06/2015 12:14

The notion of 'chair parts' has had me grinning to myself in the office!

AdventureBe · 22/06/2015 12:14

I don't know why anyone would go out of their way to cause offense.

I'm not easily offended but I wouldn't want my children to cause offense (especially to someone who might matter to their future prospects) because they weren't brought up to know that what they said might be offensive to some.

So, it's not really about the feelings of those who might be offended, but the way that might make them behave towards my DC IYSWIM.

There are too many people who use swearing or vulgar language so normally in conversation that they can't or don't know to control it. I have had people say "that's a fucking hard question" in job interviews. There's no way I'm going to put them in front of my customers!

DumbledoresKnobblyWand · 22/06/2015 12:15

I can't believe people think fart is disgusting but PUMP is polite.

"Mother dear, I do believe I've just pumped"
"What-ho child, pop to the water closet and evacuate your jobbie"

LikeIcan · 22/06/2015 12:15

YANBU - I really judge adults who use this word or allow their dc to use it.

ShatnersBassoon · 22/06/2015 12:15

I'm imagining children whispering 'bum' and 'willy' into their pillows, or screaming it in empty open spaces, because they can't hold it in but mother won't allow it Grin

AdventureBe · 22/06/2015 12:17

That's exactly why these word are/were "banned" though Shatners. That way Dc get to giggle over them rather than properly offensive words.
