to wear my jammies at home?

Context: I'm a SAHM, 2 under 5, on playgroup, pre-school run & day out days, I dress smart. If we're having a home day getting messy baking & playing on the floor etc, I wear what I like to call my 'lounge outfit.' essentially pj trousers & top. But, importantly I think, I have sets of pjs that I designate as lounge outfits & therefore never sleep in, so to me, they aren't pjs. Anyway, DM carefully suggested to me this morning that I should 'get dressed' so that I when answer the door I'm not in my pjs. She said staying in my pjslounge outfit all day sends the message that I don't care. My point is a. they aren't y pjs as I don't sleep in them and b. It's my house, I want to feel comfortable playing at home with my kids & I don't care what the postman thinks when I answer the door. AIBU? AIBSlovenly?!

It's your house- you can wear what you like.

I lived for years in PJs for housewear - I never went out so no point in putting proper clothes on. I never slept in them either. YANBU :)

I think you should carefully suggest that your mother minds her own business.

You can buy, very cheaply, lounge wear which doesn't look pj-ey.
Think dark colours rather than pastel stripes and sweatshirt type rather than button up. You do wear a bra don't you? Might that be what your mum means?
I sort of know what your mum means; I get into yoga pants and tshirt at the end of the day but I always get dressed first thing.

I have a pair of M&S black jersey bottoms and a pair of funky fat face patterned ones. They are both technically pjs but I wear them as lounge pants at weekends and in evening.

So I shower etc and then will wear a top and my lounge pants

And it's got bugger all to do with anyone else!

Wear what you like but I'd always wear trackies or yoga pants rather than pjs in case of unexpected visitors or popping out for milk. And also cause I wouldn't let my ds stay in his Jammies all day so to set an example.

I wear them if I am lounging about/ in for rest of the day.

My dm has laughed at this so may be a generational thing.

I do find something a bit..........depressing........about people wearing pyjamas during the day. Lounge wear as described by Seriously is fine but pyjamas as daywear doesn't appeal.

I'm not even sure why it's important to wear a bra (as per a reply upthread). The world won't end if the postman or whoever has to see the faint outline of a nipple :)

I think it's quite an old fashioned thing to worry about opening the door to someone wearing pj's or whatever. Tons of people work all kinds of shifts now and have just got out of bed mid afternoon. No biggie.

Your dm is just being a bit prim and proper.

I put good jeans on when out but am now sitting here in my enormous elasticated waist jeans that are super comfy. My two teenagers always put jammy bottoms on as soon as they get in from college. Don't think that anyone that may happen to knock on your door cares anyway. I imagine the delivery drivers and postmen are more entertained by my spectacular bedhead!

I think it's absolutely fine if that's what you're comfortable in but I do agree that maybe some leggings or slightly less obviously pjs might be a good call for answering the door etc. it's obviously not going to the supermarket in a onesie but it does make me think of it a little I'm afraid - just my opinion

This exact problem is why 'loungwear' exists as a clothing category.

The comfiest you can possibly make clothing without them technically being pjs.

The idea that what women wear suggests some central 'message' about themselves and their state of mind - smart dresser = self-esteem and 'together', non-smart = sad-sack depressive, has Let Herself Go - annoys me. It's the thin end of the 'put on lipstick before DH comes home or he'll Look Elsewhere' wedge.

And that could be the DH who lives 24/7 in grey marl tracksuit bottoms, and is perfectly happy with the 'message' he is giving off, thank you.

Personally, I do find it a bit odd that people on Mn so often post about coming home from work, tearing off their bras and/or their work clothes and putting on pyjamas 'because it's more comfortable' - what on earth are you wearing in the daytime that's so uncomfortable you can't go home and eat dinner in it?

Tell MIL you do get dressed to answer the door as you're all usually naked at home

But I think playing with your kids, getting messy and suchlike is far more important than what you are wearing.
I wear joggy bottoms or yoga pants to play in the mud or puddles.
Makes no sense to me to be dressed up posh to get muddy!

Ahhh yanbu really but my snobby side does judge people who wear pyjamas not for bed. Wouldn't be allowed in my house I'm afraid! But fair enough, your house your rules.

No yanbu, ive got my batman Pj bottoms on, that ive never once worn for bed, with a T shirt. yesterday I was wearing Thor Pj bottoms, again ever worn for bed, and a vest top. I wasn't going anywhere or having any visitors apart from dm and she doesn't care anyway. enjoy your pjs ð???

Yes, bra always, 2 babies later a bra is an essential for me Today I'm in a Fat Face set, I think they're nice though sold as jammies. Thing is I am a Dr on mat leave so one postman, seeing my title on a parcel & knocking the door at 3pm said 'oh god sorry Dr Suddenly, I didn't know whether to knock in case you worked last night & I see I've got you out of bed, sorry..' I didn't enlighten him There was a definite 'you are letting yourself go' implication I think in the 'it sends the message that you don't care' comment. I do shower, put makeup on, tend to tie hair back as a swim every night but generally I look presentable & if I need to nip out to the shops I throw on chinos & a top. Perhaps I shall mention my preference for my birthday suit as my home outfit of choice to DM ;)

No I don't have teenagers it's true! But I wasn't allowed to stay in pyjamas when I was one. I guess I'll have to wait and see if I am similarly able to lay down the law, I absolutely accept you have to pick your battles.
