to not give a toss that I'm vegan and just killed 40-50 slugs and snails

I haven't had a single strawberry this year that hadn't been part nibbled.

Its wet outside. I tool my torch and a bucket with salty water and plopped all the ones I could find in there.

Sadly this didn't seam to kill them, so I sprinkled salt on the ones that tried to get out. And they dropped down.

Am I a bad person? Mostly they were slugs, but did get a few snails.

She could let the slugs take over the garden and eat all her produce. What helps the planet more - eating self grown fruit and vegetables (can't get more local than that) or letting slugs reign free and buying food from the supermarket.

londonrach · 13/06/2015 08:55

Salt on a snail or slug is very cruel. Im a meat eater and now considering a bacon sandwitch but i never do that to a slug or snail. They very easy to move (to the snail park). If you wanted to do anything the beer traps are nicer as at least they die happy.

OhMittens · 13/06/2015 08:56

Lovelyfriend it's the fact the OP watched the slugs/snails die in an inhumane manner which is at odds with her supposed vegan philosophy.

Not sure why you are struggling so much to grasp that?

Mrsjayy · 13/06/2015 08:58

I think you are a hypocrite but tbh sometimes needs must your food was being eaten it was woman versus slug Grin

MistressMia · 13/06/2015 09:28

londonrach your stance is as hypocritical as the OPs (and mine).

Even if it had been reared humanely, the pig will have died experiencing absolute terror knowing it was going to be killed. They are extremely intelligent animals and would have known what was about to befall him/her.

I think another poster was right, we can only all do what we can. I'm vegetarian, bordering on veganasim but have no compunction about killing pests. Even 'non-chemical' pesticides will result in pain and suffering to a larger or greater degree.

I can understand the OPs absolute frustration and have done the same in the past, but did feel guilty. In the end just gave up trying to grow anything (more out of laziness than guilt though). Would use Nemslug now if I restarted.

Lozy79 · 13/06/2015 10:15

I save snails on the pavement Smile

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 13/06/2015 10:26

Killing them is fine. It's not like you ate them which is what veganism is about - eating.

Salt method is very cruel. Bucket of beer or slug pellets better.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 13/06/2015 10:28

My dad favours the brick on top and then... crunch standing on it.

VeganCow · 13/06/2015 10:59

moving you are wrong. Veganism is not just about not eating animals. The op thinks this as well, so you are both misinformed and op is not a vegan.

Vegans don't wear leather or fur, it's not all about food!

kali110 · 13/06/2015 12:05

Thats just horrible

uttercyclepath · 13/06/2015 12:11

Oh fgs, slugs are disgusting - get the bloody salt on them (even though it makes a mess, it works)
All this getting them to drink beer, and washing them away and other namby pamby, off with the fairies stuff! Hmm

SALT!
or SLUG PELLETS
(unless you have pets, in which case slug pellets aren't a good idea and shouldn't be used)

MistressMia · 13/06/2015 12:16

Not just pets, slug pellets are bad for garden birds and hedgehogs, so I wouldn't use those.

uttercyclepath · 13/06/2015 12:18

On the rare occasion I do use them, the following morning I make sure to dig any remaining ones well into the soil, or get a trowel and dispose of them.

Sallystyle · 13/06/2015 12:22

Salt is a really painful death. It is agony.

I would never do it and can't understand how someone could do it. And I hate slugs and snails.

I remember when I was young seeing a person put salt on a slug and it was fucking awful and made me feel sick to my stomach.

strawberrypenguin · 13/06/2015 12:24

I like snails, not so fond of slugs. Not veggie but I will happily squish (or fling) the caterpillars who try to eat my gooseberry bush every year.

Slug pellets are also horribly toxic to hedgehogs so I think salt is probably a better choice for just getting the slugs.

coniferssilhouette · 13/06/2015 13:10

YABU, another creature's life is more important than you have non-nibbled strawberries...

LovelyFriend · 13/06/2015 13:37

mittens yes I get that.

Just to clarify then, you are now saying you can kill slugs and be vegan as long as you don't enjoy it?

asmallandnoisymonkey · 13/06/2015 13:38

Love how hypocritical the OP is. Being a vegan and then subjecting animals that are just minding their own business to a cruel, slow and painful death?
I don't understand how she thinks it's ok.

Surely encouraging natural predators or using nematodes is a better way to deal with a common garden pest.

I realise I might be in the minority in believing that what goes around comes around and the basic philosophy of Karma, but I honestly don't understand why people have such little regard for life. It might 'only' be a slug, but I imagine if someone came along and dumped a load of caustic chemicals on you and then watched you die you would be rather unimpressed.

Bair · 13/06/2015 13:48

I eat meat and I'm a gardener. I wouldn't kill them with salt.

I don't understand your brand of veganism OP: Don't kill animals to eat them, just kill them if they eat your food and if you do, don't brag about it like a kid with a magnifying glass and some ants

to not give a toss that I'm vegan and just killed 40-50 slugs and snails
OhMittens · 13/06/2015 14:30

LovelyFriend You really like my attention, don't you? Sweet.

OhMittens · 13/06/2015 14:32

asmallandnoisymonkey the OP is clearly not vegan, by definition.

asmallandnoisymonkey · 13/06/2015 14:38

To be honest, the only thing I think she is, is a bit of a prat.

LovelyFriend · 13/06/2015 14:58

I'm just trying to follow your ever changing logic. Or lack thereof.

CQ · 13/06/2015 15:11

Slug pellets don't just poison the slug, they harm everything that eats the slug too - pets, hedgehogs, foxes, owls and other and garden birds.

Please don't use them - unless you want to kill an entire food chain Sad

OhMittens · 13/06/2015 15:41

asmallandnoisymonkey or perhaps just a person who enjoys seeking out people to stir up argument with on the internet.

OP is not really worthy of the attention, but the topic is.
