to not give a toss that I'm vegan and just killed 40-50 slugs and snails

I haven't had a single strawberry this year that hadn't been part nibbled.

Its wet outside. I tool my torch and a bucket with salty water and plopped all the ones I could find in there.

Sadly this didn't seam to kill them, so I sprinkled salt on the ones that tried to get out. And they dropped down.

Am I a bad person? Mostly they were slugs, but did get a few snails.

Btw to the vegans on this thread...where can I get nooch without paying an arm and a leg? But I don't want to bulk buy...

killervegan2015 · 12/06/2015 23:24

true vegans respect all forms of animal and plant life no matter how distasteful it might be.

Confused no they just don't eat it.

Most vegans would find the natural world horrific then, many animals kill other animals.

As a fellow gardner (and vegan) I feel your pain but can't condone your actions. I go through spells of collecting them all up in a bucket and taking them to the other side of the park, apparently they home, but that's got to take ages ;)

killervegan2015 · 12/06/2015 23:26

N yeast is 2.99 for the b12 version from any health food shop. Used to be 99p 10 years ago Shock

just take them on a long walk

XiCi · 12/06/2015 23:26

So you're a vegan, why does that mean you can only eat your own home grown fruit and vegetables?
Go and buy some fucking strawberries and leave the snails alone.
That is their natural habitat but you would rather cause them a painful death instead of going up the road to the grocers!!

OhMittens · 12/06/2015 23:27

kilervegan: There's no question that dying by salt is not instant.

It's the method you employed as much as anything and the attitude "Sadly this didn't seam to kill them, so I sprinkled salt on the ones that tried to get out. And they dropped down." Something really quite icky about a vegan's attitude there.

GobblersKnob · 12/06/2015 23:27

42andGaffaTape a small bulk buy? It's about £9 for three tubs of Marigold on Amazon?

BeeInYourBonnet · 12/06/2015 23:29

OP you are mean. And you seem to revel in it.
If I ever stand on a slug or snail by accident in the dark, I am horrified.

OhMittens · 12/06/2015 23:32

So because you don't consider snails a food source they are outside your circle of respect/worth?

Interesting. What about (say) shrimps? Do you eat those? Would you eat those? They have shells and aren't furry or feathery. If you don't eat those, why do they get respect and snails don't? If you do eat those, would you eat lobster?

42andGaffaTape · 12/06/2015 23:33

I have tried my local health food shops op and they are lacking in nooch although awesome in most other areas.

gobblers many thanks, I'll have a look. Other sites were asking more than that for one tub. The p&p seems to be the killer. I'm on a budget Grin

Off shopping now. Have fun!

VeganCow · 12/06/2015 23:34

Killer vegan, you have no clue Grin

You think the definition of vegan is someone who doesn't eat meat?

Go and educate yourself then grow up.

By your definition vegans also wear leather and fur!

hiddenhome · 12/06/2015 23:36

No, horrified is when you accidentally run over a bunny rabbit.

mrsfuzzy · 12/06/2015 23:40

killer, the mantra of veganism is to respect all animal lives, you certainly are not a vegan in my book if you kill living creatures of any kind. stop dressing up your stupid ideas.

OhMittens · 12/06/2015 23:41

I would personally rather do without strawberries, or construct some sort of greenhouse that keeps the slugs and snails out, or grow strawberries high up with a humane deterrent.

but that's just me Hmm

expatinscotland · 12/06/2015 23:41

A man comes home to find a snail on his doormat. He picks it up and flings it away.

Two years later that same man comes home to find a snail on his doormat. He picks it up and it yells, 'What the fuck was that all about?'

LovelyFriend · 12/06/2015 23:41

So by some of the logic here "real" vegans would only eat food of a known provenance? All coffee chocolate tea imported fruit and veg must be fairly traded? If its not chances are the workers who produced the food are being exploited and treated unethically. If you eat it you can't call your self vegan?

Vegans cant dress off the high street but must wear People Tree etc only?

hiddenhome · 12/06/2015 23:42

Ha, ha, good joke Grin

CattyCatCat · 12/06/2015 23:43

Yabu if you are a vegan. You might as well have a bacon butty and call it a day.

expatinscotland · 12/06/2015 23:44

'If I ever stand on a slug or snail by accident in the dark, I am horrified.'

Me, too. My shoes!

hiddenhome · 12/06/2015 23:44

Yes, if you're a vegan you have to do it properly Lovely

It can get a bit cult like from my observations.

mrsfuzzy · 12/06/2015 23:47

a lot of posters on here tonight must have their heads up their arses as they do not have a clue about veganism, esp. the original poster. i'd really like to stamp on her, see how she likes it, and yes i am a vegan, just don't like some people that much !

LovelyFriend · 12/06/2015 23:48

Sounds very elitist to me. Not everyone can afford that kind of food and clothing. They can eat a vegan diet but can't be a "real vegan" unless they are pretty well off with big disposable income.

What kind of fucked up thinking is that?

42andGaffaTape · 12/06/2015 23:49

"Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose."

We can all do but our best. And if you are an omni who gets offered by my/others choice...meh you don't get to piss in my vegan over night oats...my life, my conscience and my choice. Same as your views and diet.

Peace and love dudes Smile

OhMittens · 12/06/2015 23:54

LovelyFriend where have you got the bit about all food being of known provenance to be vegan?

From the Vegan Society FYI: "Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose."

It's not to do with fruit and veg, tea coffee etc. whereby you are describing the unethical treatment of people, something equally worthwhile but not actually the philosophy of veganism.

There's this amazing thing called Google. Have a look on the world wide web.
