to not give a toss that I'm vegan and just killed 40-50 slugs and snails

I haven't had a single strawberry this year that hadn't been part nibbled.

Its wet outside. I tool my torch and a bucket with salty water and plopped all the ones I could find in there.

Sadly this didn't seam to kill them, so I sprinkled salt on the ones that tried to get out. And they dropped down.

Am I a bad person? Mostly they were slugs, but did get a few snails.

Not sufficiently alcoholic evidently.

DumbledoresKnobblyWand · 12/06/2015 22:58

If I ever step on one accidentally I give it a pity squish, so it's not left sliding around with a broken shell, in pain and wondering what it ever did to deserve such a cruel death.

hiddenhome · 12/06/2015 22:58

I like the idea of being vegan, but all that tasty flesh and cheese Shock

OhMittens · 12/06/2015 22:59

Joking aside, you are totally hypocritical. Joking aside, you killed living creatures by an unpleasant method, in temper, because they ate your strawberries. Joking aside, it's cruel. Also your OP is almost asking for back-pats like you think it's cute or funny. It's not either of those things. It would have been better if you had killed them instantly but the way your OP seems to have got pleasure from watching them die is quite horrible.

prettybird · 12/06/2015 23:02

Flinging them doesn't work - they just come back. Someone did some research and found that slugs and snails have an amazing ability to return to "their" territory from quite a distance. I think you needed to go something like a mile away Shock - anything less than that and they'll just work their way back to your garden. Hmm

answersonapostcardplease · 12/06/2015 23:02

Yes the snails had a great life until brutally murdered. Hmm op you are a hypocrite. Tut.

hiddenhome · 12/06/2015 23:03

Put them on the bus.

killervegan2015 · 12/06/2015 23:03

I did not get any pleasure at a from the act of killing them.

I got pleasure out of them being taken out of my garden.

Actually I have a sewer man hole in my garden. I think tomorrow I will just put them all down there and flush the loo. That's far better right?

Exactly pretty! And its selfish throwing them

Hands up everyone who thinks it's cruel and who eat non organic pork, chicken and/or eggs?

42andGaffaTape · 12/06/2015 23:04

Hey! Vegans are humans and hypocrites too. Fuck it. We do our best.

ilovesooty · 12/06/2015 23:05

Homing snails. I never knew they did that.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 12/06/2015 23:06

Oh ffs ^^

I was going to say beer traps but LovelyFriend beat me to it.

They choose their fate, and you can whizz'em up into an alchoholic smoothie Grin

hiddenhome · 12/06/2015 23:06

Mice find their way back if you put them outside.

42andGaffaTape · 12/06/2015 23:09

lovelyfriend won't somebody think about the cows? Oh please won't somebody think about the cows?

clutches hemp necklace in place of pearls

LovelyFriend · 12/06/2015 23:09

You need to use straight sided container for beer traps - even better if it slopes inward. And more beer - or dilute it. I've used this method very successfully.

VeganCow · 12/06/2015 23:12

Strange post. I am vegan and wouldn't dream of doing what you did, even less the glorifying in it.
Using salt is awful, a truly nasty death for those living beings. You mention a slow death from pellets, don't make me laugh. Salt is worse.

I think you're op is weird and don't believe you're even a vegetarian never mind a vegan. For someone spectacularly uneducated on matters of animal cruelty I assume you're neither.

LovelyFriend · 12/06/2015 23:12

Yeah and all the factory farmed cows. And dairy cows impregnated and their babies are wrenched from them and slaughtered so we can have cow juice. Yum.

LovelyFriend · 12/06/2015 23:15

But how to grow lentils, quinoa and strawberries if the bloody slugs are overpopulated and ravenous?

Pack them all off to the kennels?

killervegan2015 · 12/06/2015 23:16

I can't be vegan as I killed the slugs that for year have stopped me growing veg?

How do you know its woorse By salt? What is your source?

Better for people to go hungry than hurt a slug eh?

42andGaffaTape · 12/06/2015 23:20

Okay the drunken lightheartedness has now left me. Sad

but...I take conscience in the fact I don't myself don't contribute to the meat/egg/dairy/honey/unethical trade. How other people conduct themselves is up to them.

mrsfuzzy · 12/06/2015 23:20

true vegans respect all forms of animal and plant life no matter how distasteful it might be.

OhMittens · 12/06/2015 23:21

killervegan pick a lane. You either respect all living creatures or you don't. And if you really feel you have to get rid of them by killing them then the respectful way to do it would be humanely which is (at the very least) quickly. It would be better to squish them thoroughly underfoot to kill them instantly than it would to drown/dehydrate them to death.

Yes I get that I'm in the minority here but how can other people not see the irony in the OP being a vegan but inflicting an unnecessarily drawn out and unpleasant death on living creatures? They ain't furry or feathery so they are exempt from respect, and that's ok?

emmelinelucas · 12/06/2015 23:23

I like snails - as a thing, their shells are beautuful and the babies are so cute. But they eat my plants. I used to pick them off and put them on a shovel and deposit them into next doors (ok, so they have got about an acre of garden, they wouldn't even notice) but more snails came.
As an experiment I put a blob of nail varnish on the ones I picked out.
They came back the next night.
They do come home.
I still pick them off. I am exhausted. All for snails.
I put them over the road. Then at least they have a chance.
