I had a bit of a...I wouldn't call it an argument really...with a friend last night. I know I shouldn't let it upset me, or pay it any attention, but I've been stewing on it a bit and I am quite upset about it.

I've been hunting for a rug for DD's bedroom, but we couldn't really find anything that DD liked, was the size we wanted and wasn't silly £££.

I like craft (sewing, knitting, crochet, etc) and find sitting still in front of the TV quite hard so need something to fiddle with and usually knit or crochet. I've just made some granny square blankets and am over knitting at the moment, so I thought I'd have a go at making a rag rug. It's the ultimate in mindless craft, I can do a bit each evening with one eye on Eastenders and not have to concentrate on it too much.

Anyway, friends were over last night, their kids play with ours, we get a takeaway and usually have a nice evening. Friend came in and clocked the half done rug folded up over the arm of the sofa.

She asked what I was making now, with a bit of eye rolling, said I was having a go at making a rag rug, she was a bit "oh, FFS Hmm" I just laughed it off, and said "oh, you know what I'm like" and left it at that

A bit later she bought the subject of the rug up again and had a huge go at me about it. "Why can't I just buy a rug like normal people?", that I'm making my kids a laughing stock with all the handmade stuff "what's wrong with Disney Princess/Frozen/whatever stuff", why do I always have to be different and that it's intensely irritating that I'm so arty farty about everything

I said that I enjoyed making stuff and the kids had never complained about anything I'd made them (I don't make clothes, I'm rubbish at dress making, but I like messing about with stuff like bunting and cushions and house-y guff)

Initially, I was a bit "fuck off and mind your own business" but like I say, I've been stewing a bit and am a bit upset by it. It feels like a huge criticism of me if that makes sense. And, the kids/laughing stock comment has cut a bit.

Hi Op- love your way of life-it sounds like mine. I find myself growing uneasy about what's going on with this 'friend' . The bit about 'laughing stock' has made me wonder if she is working on your other friends and your children making snide -ve remarks/jokes undermining you. There is such an imbalance emotionally in the force of her unprovoked attack on you in your home that there must be a hidden source in her. The fact that she chose to attack you like that in your home is not accidental. She has kept her public jibes on a very different level but this attack was full force with the intent to hurt. Trust your instincts -how you felt was how she intended you to feel. Can you distance yourself and your children ?

diddl · 03/06/2015 15:54

My sister & I both made ourselves a rag rug as kids.

Just by knitting strips of fabric.

What you are doing seems quite professional by comparison.

How gorgeous is this?

FlaviaAlbia · 03/06/2015 16:14

Oh that's so pretty Twinkle! I love it, it's the kind of thing I'd want to pick up and touch so I can admire it.

I'd cool things with your 'friend' if I were you, since you say she's always making digs. She must be very insecure to try to put you down for your talents and trying to use your children to do it isn't the sign of a kind and thoughtful friend.

I'm loving Zings quilts and windymila cabinet and feeling slightly guilty for abandoning my last crochet project because I got too warm holding it on my lap at night. I've vowed not to buy any more wool or fabrics until I use up my stash so I'd better get moving and then I can get started on rugs and quilts Grin

Tinklewinkle · 03/06/2015 16:45

Love the patchwork Zing and your dresser windymilla

I love the hexagons, I always stick to squares. I got a quilting book for Christmas with some lovely patterns in which I keep meaning to try out. I saw bunting patchwork the other day which I must have a go at.

I was looking at Annie Sloane, I quite like the pale greyish-green colour she does. I really need to decide where to put it first. I did think about putting it in my craft shed and using it to store fabric and stuff but I need to have a shift round first.

I'm aiming for my rug to be about 160cm x 230cm. DD has a massive bedroom with a stripped wooden floor. She's got a cabin bed so it needs to go against a wall, and all the other furniture is against walls, there's shelves and whatnots in there but it looks wrong, I think it's because there's a big expanse of nothing in the middle. It needs something big to break it up a bit

I keep going back to the hula hoop forts as well. DD has some SNs and sensory issues, and sometimes becomes overwhelmed and needs somewhere quiet to hide away so I thought I could make a wooden frame and make a beach hut to hang from the ceiling. I reckon it would look ace but DH is very Hmm

I also like the braided rag rugs, I might make one for the bathroom when I've finished this one

Whoops, pressed post too soon.

Flavia I abandoned a crochet along because it got too big and hot on my lap too, it was just awkward and heavy and annoying. I prefer the granny square afghans as they don't get big enough to piss me off

I'm just going to cool it with my friend. It's our DHs who are the really friendly ones, so they can get on with it. I refuse to let it mess with my head any more

What a bitch - totally rude. And very wrong of her to project her 'values' into you and make you feel bad.

The ottoman thing is just a classic difference of opinion - I'm like you. I love to up cycle things, I bet yours is fab and I would rather that than any brand new one.

You have nothing to worry about apart from having an insensitive, aggressive friend!!

Littleham · 03/06/2015 17:08

Ignore this 'friend'. Your stuff is beautiful. I make things too.

I painted a Peter Rabbit box for my dc's when they were little, but they have grown out of it so it is sitting all sad and forlorn in the garage. I should probably do a re-paint.

swampytiggaa · 04/06/2015 07:47

Love your stuff! BTW Annie Sloan isn't the only chalk paint option.... Rustoleum do some which are £5 a tin cheaper than Annie Sloan and apparently are easier to use. In home base for certain.

I work in a hardware shop that stocks it - we sell loads.

FlaviaAlbia · 04/06/2015 09:55

A craft shed? That is genius! We don't have room to spare in the house for a craft room but we could fit a shed in the garden... Oooooh Grin

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 05/06/2015 14:57

I was going to have a craft shed but we moved and once we've extended the house I wil have a....wait for it... (drumroll)... a Sewing Room!!! all to myself!
I can't wait.

microferret · 05/06/2015 15:04

whaaaat? Your friend sounds awful, what a shitty thing to say! DH and I make loads of our furniture and cushion covers and things, it's good fun and gives one a real sense of pride, plus often more ethical than buying crap manufactured in China or stitched together by Bangladeshi toddlers.

please tell this snivelling harpy to go and take a running jump.

Tinklewinkle · 05/06/2015 15:18

Thanks all!

I've got over myself now, I'm annoyed by her, but have got a grip so I'm just going to cool it. Our DHs are the real, actual friends so DH can see them on his own.

I love having a space that I can solely dedicate to myself. I don't have to put my sewing machine away, I can leave random patchwork squares all over the place if I so wish and no one moans or tidies them up. It's bliss!

It was rather optimistically described as a "garden room" when we moved here. In reality it was a rather forlorn looking wooden summerhouse. DH insulated and plaster boarded it all out, ran electricity out there and used it as an office. I've painted it, put up pretty wall paper, hung bunting and filled it up with my crap. It's how I'd decorate my house if I didn't share it with a man with a fondness for brown Grin

I'll have a look for the Rustoleum paint. I don't have Homebase but I think I vaguely remember seeing the name in B&Q

I have plans to build a Craft Shed. I will build it over the subterranean air raid shelter so that it has a cellar...

One day.

flightywoman · 05/06/2015 17:26

I love the idea of a craft shed - most envious! I've just tidied up my sewing space - an area at the top of the stairs. Now I'm on the hunt for an old cot side or a bit of nice wooden ladder to drape all my fabrics on...

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 05/06/2015 17:36

will the middle part of a stair gates do? come & pick one up - as a temporary solution

flightywoman · 05/06/2015 17:39

Ooh it might do very well...are we close to one another I wonder? I'm in Norfolk...

5madthings · 05/06/2015 17:59

Place marking ad loving some of the ideas I am getting from here. Op your friend was mean. I am not massively crafty but do like to fiddle about and make cakes etc. I have bought a sewing machine recently and once my youngest is at school am going to get to grips with it again, I used to use one but haven't for years, ditto knitting. Abd learning to crochet.

Now off to look at hula hoop forts...

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 05/06/2015 18:04

I'm in Surrey! ummm I'll have to teleport it. ready? Wink Grin

flightywoman · 05/06/2015 18:41

Ready...

SoupDragon · 05/06/2015 18:50

I got some lovely wooden ladders very cheaply from a house clearance warehouse. However, that is in S London and thus no use whatsoever!

you know you could use trousers hangers that have the pinchy things on both ends.
you could hassle some clothes shop assistants to give you some for free, Next, H&M & Tesco staff are usually helpful.
