The one thing I would say about the bitching (suffering from an invisible illness myself) is that it's not entirely without foundation.

I have occasionally been made very angry by colleagues who I am certain have either made up or exaggerated mental health problems in order to have/excuse time off work.

Unfortunately because they are invisible they are also often the first port of call for the unscrupulous. I do think it happens, and I do think it makes it very hard for the rest of us genuine cases.
